Clarification on Direct Damage

I'm not 100%, but seems like anything other than AoE is considered Direct Damage. Is that correct?
What about things on a timer like detonation or Power of the Light? Still Direct Damage?

✭✭I dont know specifically about PotL but usually those abilities are classifies as DoTs, damage over/after a specific amount of time. Sorcerer’s Daedric Curse is classified as such for example. To clear up this constant confusion from players, ZOS really should include the type of damage being done as part of the tool tip. It is quite integral information when it comes to making an effective build, given that different sets affect different types, as do Championship points.3 -

✭✭You can test what is direct dmg or dot, by respeccing champion points and looking at the skill tooltip. It will be expensive yes, you can maybe do on pts.
And you can check what is counting as single target or aoe ability, by equipping lightning or firestaff and see the different if you have the destruction staff passives unlocked.PC, EU server, Ebonheart Pact

I wouldn't always 100% trust tooltips. The best thing you can do is read the tooltip AND test the damage on a dummy.
That being said, within 2019, they fixed most if not all of the tooltip and damage scaling issues. Some tooltips showed increases from Direct dmg cp, but saw no actual benefit, others had the oposite happen. Blade Cloak at 1 point was affected by Direct AND DoT scaling. The list goes on and on, so I've conditioned myself to test with real damage rather than tooltips in case they've missed anything.PC Beta - 2200+ CP

✭✭✭✭✭It's often unclear whether something is considered "damage over time" or "direct damage". Alcast and Woeler made the useful site https://eso-skillbook.com to help. You can look up any skill there and it tells you which Champion points boost its damage. If it's increased by Thaumaturge then it's damage over time. If it's increased by Master at Arms then it's direct damage. Some skills will list both Thaumaturge and Master at Arms. This typically means that the initial hit is direct, but then it places a DoT on the enemy.
None of this has anything to do with AoE. The opposite of area damage is considered single target damage. You can have an AoE DoT, AoE direct, single target DoT, or single target direct damage skill. This mostly comes into play with using a Lightning Staff (boosts AoE damage skills) vs an Inferno Staff (boosts single target damage skills).Edited by WrathOfInnos on March 3, 2020 2:15AM1 -

✭✭Really wish they would include in the tooltips what kind of damage a skill is and what CP affect it. This would be super helpful to console players especially since we do not have the benefit of add-ons that help with this to some degree.
While looking up a skill on a website can be done and is indeed helpful. I just think that kind of information should be readily available in game for reference. Surely it would not take more a day of someone’s time to fix this.
I know I have talked to people in game who wear certain sets thinking that X skill was affected by it when in fact it was not. A little extra information would go along way to help new and old players alike.2
