Regarding Forum Avatars

NB: This isn't a request to allow personalised avatars on the forums, as I fully understand why we're restricted to the available selection, so please don't use this thread to complain about that particular issue. This is simply a request to please add a tooltip to the available avatars, so that we know what each one represents.

And I know that I'm not the only confused person here, as searching the forums produced the following threads:
ESO forum mystery what are these mysterious icons mean?
Forum Avatar Icons - What are they?!?

For instance, I initially chose this one because I thought it represented the Psijic Order:
pK5SFYPOLEJ63.jpg

But only because I found the Psijic Vault Crate image on USEP,
256px-ON-card-Psijic_Vault_Crate_Back.png
And I mistakenly thought that the Celtic triskele was the symbol of the Psijic Order; but in fact it's that of the Gold Coast Trading Company. (!)

I also discovered that some of the avatars are from the guild heraldry collection, but not all of the heraldic symbols are included. I think it would be nice if guild members could display their crests if they so desired.

And so I've now chosen this: pASES7Q9WVQ60.jpg Because it most resembles the Psijic symbol on the banner 154px-ON-banner-Psijic_Order.png Although I actually have no idea what it really is!

So please, ZOS forum moderators, if it isn't too much to ask, may we have a tooltip description of each avatar to dispel the mystery?

Altmer have their crystal towers, and that's how they want to be — cold and perfect. And Dunmer are just like their Red Mountain — smouldering and dark. We just want to have a drink and not worry about it."

No one with mental age over 10 "judge" people according their avatar anyway, it just beneficial feature when browsing you can return notice certain persons comment/reply faster than just reading name due human brain working better on visual cue and most people not wanting to be just default icon and having variebility on taste.

Often people just pick icon they like to see most.

Just wow...reread the post. Nowhere in OP's post does he even hint @ being "judged". OP seems to simply have a way to know the meaning behind the avatars. Not a bad thing. Ease up.

I agree, it would be helpful if when you hovered over it something would come up with a name or brief description, like "Warden symbol", "Daedroth" "horse symbol" or whatever.

There's quite a few pictures which I think look cool but I'd never use it just because I'm not sure what it actually is - whether it's a specific NPC or just a generic creature or what. Without knowing that I'm not sure how other players are likely to interpret it. I'm not worried about being "judged" for what I pick, but I also don't want to give misleading messages - like using a character from an in-game organisation I don't like or haven't even encountered yet.

    * Note to self: never post a question on a Friday night when there's potentially 3.5 billion people online, and most of them are on the ESO forums, also asking questions.

Wanting avatar that has deeper meaning than just simply being pretty does mean that person infact wants to be "judged" by his avatar, not on this case on negative aspect but because they want their avatar would deploy something deeper or understand of game lore perhaps in example. They want artificial confirmation on that they have knownledge of something, they want to be judged to be better person as someone just based on their decision on irrelevant icon.

Perhaps it just eludes me what exactly op wants but that was my impression. I mean if you want knownledge of something, there are better ways to obtain it than icon tooltip.

I think you misinterpreted my question... this isn't about judging anyone else at all. I like TES lore, and I'd like to know that my avatar reflects my character in that regard. For example, thinking I had a 'Psijic' avatar that reflects an interest in Mysticism, as opposed to the Gold Coast Trading Company, which is an entirely commercial entity. It's a completely personal thing, of course, but I'd rather have my username associated with a group - albeit fictional - that's focused on the philosophical/magical/mystical aspect of the world, as opposed to that one that's entirely materialistic/commercial.

I actually think a tooltip to explain the various symbols would be great, since, honestly, I have no idea what a lot of them stand for, but would really like to know and I'm sure they must be connected to the lore somehow.

Not that it would make me change my avatar, because I'm a simple girl in that regard who likes to look at a cute bear cub, but I would still love to know what exactly all of those avatars represent. There are some creatures (or people in suits of armor) there where I really can't tell what they're supposed to be, and having played TES since Morrowind I have to admit, that kind of vexes me :D

Indeed, hence my question. I believe that becoming familiar with the lore -- and I am striving to do so -- requires an understanding of its symbology, but it's difficult to find a source that explains/describes them. e.g. this is one of the guild heraldry symbols:
    ON-icon-heraldry-Misc_Foot.png
which I might assume represents Phynaster, but for all I know could in fact be symbolic of a beggars guild or even the slave, Hides-His-Foot! (Although I think it's a shame this isn't an avatar option.)
Someone who tried make a triquetra/trinity knot while drunk?
Lol! Ironic, as I eventually chose it after a few (*ahem* perhaps a few too many!) whiskies on Friday night.
I'm not sure why we cant just upload our own avatars. This forum is heavily moderated, so if someone uploads something inappropriate, they can just remove it.
I asked a similar question regarding images in our signatures when I first set up my profile, and redlink1979 pretty much summed up the issue when they said, "We can't have nice things because there's always someone who abuses... " I imagine the admins and mods already have their hands full just having to police trolling and baiting etc.
"So, drinking is a sacrament to Y'ffre... because it's his way of reminding us not to take things too seriously... You know how the other Elves are.
