    Just get rid of it.

Use Inner Fire for range taunt. It's what good tanks use already so we can slot a lightning staff.

I've been of the school of thought that Staves should be split into elemental categories. But with this, I'm thinking it might be better to split them into role categories.

    Defensive Staff
    Offensive Staff
    Restoration Staff

Splitting this into three categories as above could help keep things seperate and allow better utility for defensive uses.

Alteration Staff skill line could easily focus around defensive buffs and CC. Since it's pretty much what it does in, for example, Skyrim. Ebon Skin, Paralyze, Life Detection - all these spells are from Alteration tree.

This has been suggested many times before. Not sure why it hasn't happened yet. It would have made a lot of sense to leave Frost staves something like what they were before their tanking conversion and create an entirely new staff line for Alteration. They wouldn't even have to design new models for the 80+ motifs in the game.

If a new line was created to focus on defense, i'd expect that the taunt would be removed from Tri-focus and potentially redesigned in regards to the frost staff portion.

Fully-charged Flame Staff Heavy Attacks deal 12% additional damage.
Shock Staff Heavy Attacks damage nearby enemies for 100% of the damage done.
Fully-charged Frost Staff Heavy Attacks *applies a chilling damage over time that reduces it's damage dealt as the effect wears off (Thaws)*

The thought behind the idea is that Fire is Direct Damage, Shock is AoE damage, and Frost could be Damage over time.

They should detach the taunt from trifocus add something else and make the taunt its own passive. Easy.

Update elemental blockade to taunt and use stamina with any staff. This would provide tanks a way to do a AoE taunt.

It's not that a staff taunt needs to go. It's that ZoS needs to find a way to support both mag tanks and ice mages. I find it very puzzling that years of sub-standard Magden DPS have gone by and ZOS hasn't managed to solve what doesn't seem a very difficult problem if one were actually looking for solutions.

    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

ZOS, ice staff heavy is the ultimate trolling tool and while it's hilarious, you gonna drive away all the remaining 3 tanks that queue to random dungeon finder. So you must do something about the frost stuff. I'm not sure that even marking taunt part in red will help, because some people suck at reading. The safest bet would be just removing the taunt.
    [Removed for baiting]

Funny thing is frost staff on dps isnt a problem at all. Having tri focus passive at the same time is. Frost staff does not taunt, the passive from tri focus does. so before kicking someone from a dungeon for no reason, consider how the game actually works.

Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.

When tanking if I get a DPS who uses a frost staff to heavy attack I make sure to let them know that it taunts enemies and not to use it on the bosses most times its a combination of a lack of knowledge and sustain on the DPS part that causes them to heavy attack with a frost staff.

If I am met with silence after informing the DPS and they continue to cause the boss's to get over taunted, especially on a harder dungeon where the over taunting is causing the boss to kill everyone else due to the random targeting.

I will type in chat since we have two tanks in the group, does anyone mind if I leave. That usually results in the frost staff wielding DPS to stop heavy attacking or get kicked by the group that wants to keep a tank, If I am met with more silence and the dungeon is a pain to do I leave simple as that.

If its an easier dungeon I will generally see it through since I have queued for it, provided the the DPS is good enough to quickly kill the bosses making over taunting less of an issue.

I can usually compensate if the boss gets over taunted and switch to my resto back bar and keep the group alive till I can re taunt the boss.

But to be honest very rare that I see a frost staff wielding DPS most have the common sense to use a fire or lighting stick instead, usually only people that really want to be an ice damage DPS or have a frost staff back bared in case they get a fake tank.

The frost staff has its uses, there are real tanks that use them, removing taunt based on people who have not bothered to learn about the passives of the weapon they have chosen to use is a bad idea.

Main reason I rarely use frost staffs for tanking is, the taunt/heavy attack takes too long and does not apply major breach/fracture, simple as that I might back bar one to help with block cost in some dungeons but that is not too often.

No, it isn't tldr. It is "I have plenty of skill points so let me get all the passives since it is hard to imagine that they would add a passive that would hurt me."

No need to kick. Can easily tell them "don't heavy attack or chance your weapon." I've politely requested that multiple times tanking with alts (I don't do normals with my main tank).

:/ The actual Tanks who go into Random Dungeons are doing a great service.

Not denying that. I was implying that they have to suffer through bowtards who only la spam doing 3k dps in veteran dungeons and ice staff enthusiasts that draw aggro, get their dinner pushed back into their throat and complain to tank for not aggro'ing.

I'm also a Frost Staff enthusiast but I learned my lesson about Tri Focus long ago. Frost users definitely need to learn to read passives but the game still needs a Magic Tanking option for those inclined to not be shoehorned into Stamina.

It makes sense for tanking to deplete stamina, after all stamina is the ability to sustain prolonged physical or mental effort.
SnB abilities are stam and WD based attacks. Taunting is one thing but holding something back should ware the player out.
The player should have a big hand held magic rune (spell) for tanking if magic tanks are to be desired, heavy armor wearers should only use SnB and the DPS use weapons.
The ice staff taunt/tanking shows that tye developer has a lack of imagination when it comes to classes, roles, aesthetics and weapons/spells.

    Just get rid of it.

Use Inner Fire for range taunt. It's what good tanks use already so we can slot a lightning staff.

The lightning staff doesn't allow for magika blocking. That only comes from the Ice staff, the only benefit to a lightning staff is elemental blockade to put enemies off balance, but almost every trial I have ever run has a DPS using lightning, so why bother doubling up when I can pretty much hold block forever with SnB and Frost staff saving the healers from having to focus on me too much and being able to keep the group alive.

Alot of good ideas listed above.

    Fire staff boosts direct damage
    Lightning staff boosts Aoe damage
Frost staffs should boost DoT damage. The frost heavy attack should apply a 3 second DoT from the tri focus passive.

Using magicka to block and having heavy attacks taunt enemies should be level 1 and level 2 of a seperate destro staff tanking passive.

Very easy solution that makes everybody happy.

Frost staff Tri focus causes more problems than it's worth. The tanking stuff should not stay on the passives. It would be best to move the tanking capabilities to destruction staff skills like frost clench and elemental susceptibility and add crit dps related passives to ancient knowledge and tri focus.

No, the Frost staff taunt does not need to go, it is an excellent tool when used right and allows me an extra slot on my bar as I do not need to slot a ranged taunt, other than for a few isolated bosses etc.

I Frost staff tank on one bar and sword n board on the other, I do this on 2 of my 3 tanks and it works extremely well in almost all content, other than the HM, no death/score run environment - that only a tiny tiny % of the player base engage with anyway.

What may be a solution, is a change to the morphs so that it is clear one morph is for tanks and the other for dps.

yes it has to go...just as petrify and colossus...nirn will be a better place without those 3...oh wait petrify and colossus are ok? then leave my heavy attack taunt alone.

    Yep.

It should taunt with light attacks, and debuff or crowd control with heavies.
    THE DREAM *salivates*
Remove taunt from frost heavy attack. Don't tie it to a passive. Add taunt to frost clench and put it in big fat bold red letters in the frost clench description.

while i would like an instant taunt ice alternative to inner rage, the good thing about HA taunt is that it's free and even restores mag. so i'd say yes, add taunt to frost clench but keep it on frost HAs as well.

Another day, another *** posts on reddit about other *** using frost staff heavy while playing damage dealers. [Snip].

No, the Frost staff taunt does not need to go, it is an excellent tool when used right and allows me an extra slot on my bar as I do not need to slot a ranged taunt, other than for a few isolated bosses etc.

I Frost staff tank on one bar and sword n board on the other, I do this on 2 of my 3 tanks and it works extremely well in almost all content, other than the HM, no death/score run environment - that only a tiny tiny % of the player base engage with anyway.

What may be a solution, is a change to the morphs so that it is clear one morph is for tanks and the other for dps.

That solution i am totally fine with. Frost clench and elemental susceptibility would be good targets for tanking. They're not used by DPS, and that way the passives can be repurposed into damage and away from a situation where new players are stealing taunts away from tanks. It would be better overall for everyone.

suggestion: add taunt to frost clench, also give ice staff access to major fracture and major breach.
remove taunt from tri focus passive.

and while you're at it, prevent people with 1H/Shield from solo queueing as DPS. fine if you RP solo or queue premade, but it should have no place as Group DPS. :# recently i've had a bunch of SnB DDSs :unamused:

What i'd suggest off the top of my head is adding major fracture to elemental susceptibility instead of the refresh effect. and add the "36% cost reduction on block while slotted".

With frost clench, remove the immobilise for the taunt instead, and perhaps increase the chilled proc chance on the burst damage component. and add "while slotted, increase your block mitigation by 20%". frost clench preferably would become a new taunt that you would consider using over inner fire.

Make ancient knowledge +8% critical damage or +6% spell crit chance.

Perhaps tri focus could give a little penetration buff for a few seconds? Not entirely sure on that one. I think both playstyles should survive, but as it is right now, the passives are an issue and there a few morphs that could use some love.

Taunt on Frost Staff aint so bad. Most folks I know are max cp and usually fight over who gets to be the fake tank or the fake healer lol.

Then we run the dungeon...usually after the argument about why we are doing it anyways and why the person who REALLY wants to do it didn’t just solo it.

When it’s all over, someone pretends to be offended that someone DARED offer anybody the “trash” from the dungeon...even if it ain’t trash.

Then we argue about doing another one. Lol. If someone taunted the boss with an ice staff, IF anybody noticed at all they’d pepper the fool using it with a billion build questions, then they’d demand that everybody “hurry up” so they can duel the guy, if the guy hadn’t BEEN using an ice staff. If he had, I’m sure no one would have noticed if the guy had pulled something with it. Just wouldn’t notice.
