How long should someone be banned for their first toon name offense?

  • tonne.backlinderb16_ESO
Toon names shouldn't matter in a game for adults
What we see is the beginning of the end of western civilization. People are so weak and easily offended. No fighting spirit at all. Just ban everything you don't like.

It depends how much of a jerk you are being.

Making up offensive names because you think it’s funny, without considering what others might think is a bit purile and makes me think you’re a bit thick. Not to mention extremely un-immersive for all the other players around you.

I don’t want to spend my game time being taken out of the Tamriel mindset by every B1lly B1g B0110kx who thinks they are really, really funny.

    You’re not.

I’d say a 72 day ban sounds about right.

Many of my friends have recently been victims of being suspended because of their toon names. Removing good people from the game is problematic, especially considering the number of toxic players. I believe these people are being overly punished while bots, cheaters, and trolls are not targeted. How long do you feel is a fair amount of suspension time for a first ban, and explain why you chose your answer.

Not only should little kids like you get banned, you also deserve a good spanking.

    Just force name change.

If it that much of a big deal for ZoS then they should improve the name restrictions to what they want.

if you make a name that gets you banned thats a pretty thick line you would of had to of crossed, so a logical assumption would be that you went out of your way to circumvent the rules when making the name which is more likely why you would get banned, ZOS has restrictions on names for many reasons and they really dont like players trying to get round those restrictions. in short if you knew it was wrong you wouldnt try to "get away with it"

Incorrect. As a customer you deserve fair treatment. ZOS is nothing without us. We make the company what it is. Our cash finances ZOS. ZOS need to be more courteous to those who are paying for this service. Without your money, they would not be able to create new jobs. The company would fall apart. Just like with government, we the people ultimately hold the power. You have a voice, use it! Remember, this company can not thrive without us, the customers. Money does not fall from the sky or grow on trees. We made this company successful with our money. We can just as easily take it away.

You believe we control the government? That is cute. Corporations, pharma and oil companies would like a word with you....

this must also include those that choose to play a game and not be offended by someone's name, there are 13million players of this game and ESO is but one game ZOS develops, im sure they wont miss a few narrow minded ppl who like to throw their toys out of the pram when someone else doesnt get the jokes

Why are you concerned with another adults choice of their character name? It saddens me that adults feed off of hatred and trolling others. Anyone who takes the time to harass another player because of their toon name really needs to get a life. You have too much free time on your hands. Worry about your own matters and let players enjoy the game!

    this :#
i think there's a lot of people constantly overreacting and getting triggered at unnecessary stuff. personally, i don't care about other players names. i don't have to be friends with them so *shrug*

but if it was some seriously offensive *** then ofc zos will ban them. as for how long they should, idk.
as others have stated: if you are an adult, you should live with the consequences of your choices. easy.

I reckon that having their "clever" name forcibly changed is enough of a punishment. Anything more would be ridiculous, as (1) the acceptability of a name is always subjective, (2) it's a "victimless crime" that causes no harm to anybody. (And frankly, I'm much more scared by people who go out of their way to report some stranger's name, than by people who use inappropriate names. :p)

ban is a common and civilized choise when you can't immediately

break a few face bones of the jerk who pretends to be "funny" while intentionally

tries to pi$$ you off because he knows that internet anonymity will

protect him from what could (and should imo) be done to him if

he tries same attitude patterns IRL

I'd say it varies depending on the name. Something stupid should just get a forced name change - With ZOS determining the name. They want to rename? They can pay for it.

Something mildly offensive? A day as a slap on the wrist.

Something obnoxious? Up to a week.

Something disgustingly foul or personal? Permaban.

    Actions have consequences.

Most bad names are caught by the computer at inception. If found later you get a warning and forced name change. Continued rules violations can result in a ban because you are exhibiting behavior that shows you are willing to purposefully violate TOS, are likely to be a rules troublemaker in the future, and are generally a PITA anyway. I like this ban formula: 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, perma ban.

    I_Hope_You_Die_Of_Cancer?

    Rarr_Politics_Rarrr?

    Copulate_You_All?

All similar to names I've seen in other MMO's.

    Damn hahah

Okay then imo we shouldn't be allowed to do things that we can not do in real life in a video game bc it is a game aka disturbing others

Where is the poll option for "Our opinions about discipline don't matter, take your appeal your friends' appeal to Customer Support"?

Or the option for "Nice job posting this overnight when the moderators are less active"?

Or the option for "Taking bets on how long before the mods wake up and close this thread for discussing moderator activity"?

Though I will say that if its really true that many of your friends were recently banned for name changes (assuming that's all there is to the story), you might wanna brush up on what the TOS and the Code of Conduct says about Character and Account names and help them out, since they seem not to be able to find creative names that don't violate or deliberately skirt the prohibitions ZOS has in place.

How long do you feel is a fair amount of suspension time for a first ban, and explain why you chose your answer.

You only have options for things that support your own personal feelings and did not leave any room for people who feel very differently.

What someone thinks is harmless, others may not. Just because someone is an adult does not mean they want to put up with childish names of others, or that they are not offended by those childish names.

Almost all MMOs have rules about the names people use for their characters. It's not like it's not known, and yet people still want to create offensive and childish names. Thankfully ZoS takes action. People seem to think they can get away with all kinds of things. Grow up. And if people do get banned for their bad behavior it's nobody's fault but their own. I for one am glad people who behave like a troll, a griefer, a child by creating offensive names are made to change them and on rare occasions banned. Who wants to play an MMO with a bunch of offensive people that think they are funny?

Offensive names are a type of trolling, griefing, etc. If offensive names are allowed then can you imagine the kind of offensive names people might use? Racial slurs, disparaging names that relate to real life disorders or worse?

If you do something that is against the EULA, no matter what it is or how small you believe the impact is, it's still against EULA. You cannot say that just because your friends have not been banned for these other things that they shouldn't be banned for something they have done. Just because you don't have personal knowledge of people being banned for other reasons, doesn't mean they are not.

I'm an adult, and I honestly don't want to play with adults that behave like children by choosing immature, childish and potentially offensive names. Maybe they should allow them so we can easily tell who those people are and we can avoid them, or kick them from our groups, or ignore them all together.

Using an offensive name is a type of toxic behavior, not just offensive. If ZoS asked someone to change their name, I have to think they must have good reason.

This post is absurd... If you are going to take a fair poll, then provide a voting option for people who agree with the EULA.

I see the option Toon names shouldn't matter in a game for adults as a pick.

    its quite the opposite actually....

its because its a adult game, that we should be hold accountable for what we call our toons, we have a responsibility to show respect for other players by not calling our toons for something that can go against the ToS of the game, especially if it resolves around, politics, religion and such.

some names stir up to much feelings in others, that they dont belong in a game

Do you feel the same about television shows for adults? Should they all be sensored as not to offend someone? Do you not think causing a good person to have their account suspended is not offensive to them and those that care about them?

I can avoid watching movies or syndicated shows that I don't agree with or find offensive. That's what the whole rating system is about. Not a good example.

People that create names that are against the EULA are creating them for the reaction they get from others. If it's against the EULA, I cannot imagine that it would be a name that people wouldn't find offensive. That sounds suspiciously like someone is complaining because they want to use a name they know others will find offensive, with intent and purpose. That's trolling or griefing...

The problem with the whole 'offensive name' is the fact that it is impossible to define 'offensive' in terms of the law or game rules.

What I consider offensive, may be perfectly fine for somebody else. Similarly, a name I find perfectly fine may be considered offensive by somebody else. And then there is always the grey area.

The problem is in the definition of 'offensive', it cannot be defined in a rule or a law because it is a 'feeling' somebody experiences.
