don't ban bots - new solution

As we all know, bots are annoying, and even when banned, ten new ones will take their place in only moments. So here is something new to think about. Instead of banning bots, why not put them in a special server that will remove them from everyone else, but could continue farming without hindering the actual players. They would be unable to react with other players by any means (no trading nor mail). This would hopefully confuse the bot into seamlessly farming for weeks to produce nothing in the end. Tell me what you all think. I'm not afraid of criticism.

How would you keep them from making more bots in the regular game?

Well if a bot is banned then the bor operator will quickly make a new one. If he doesn't know that the bot is not producing (because he is still farming) he will not make a new bot to take its place.

So your plan is to basically send them to limbo where they will work tirelessly only to find that they really died and ended up in bot hell.

Actually they wouldn't even need to put them on a separate server, just an instance where nodes respawn immediately but yield 0 but report (RND(3)+1) to the client.

That would also mean that they would have to create an entire mega server just for bots.

Good idea for a new MMO. Bots only, regular players will be banned!

    That might draw suspicion.

Nah. Just a server. The megaserver is just a group of servers if I understood correctly.

You do know they monitor them regularly. Alerts can be setup to let them know of any changes.

    theres an idea,

while iwas playing other mmo game there was big bot problem(60% bot population)

so what they did is to to produce massive patch that was skannng active programs and if that patch found bot program running it automaticly terminated the game client and blocked it from "logiign into the world" for next 24 hrs and automaticlyreported bot user

now if the same client was turned off 3 times it automaticly banned all accounts created from this machine

and how did they know if its the same machine?
1st what they did is to putspecial sequence unique to each launcher
2nd the launcher was sending info with: IP addres, MaC adress of all wifi or ethernet cards in the computer
3rd they put special cookie file into that PC and int TEMP and Temporary internet files (systems older then vista)

those solutions in total decresed bot usage from 60% to 5% so isay it wrked pretty well

Nah ... an old 486 connected to a 9600 baud modem should do just fine.

I actually think it's a novel idea, and probably the sort of thing I'd do under the banner of R&D, just for the fun of it.

    Heres an idea...

Make a report system of boting and when a bot gets xx number of reports, a huge army of elite npc intrudes the place they farm and kill them, camp them till they log off.

Seems legit to me, however there are peeps uncomfortable with their computers be scanned. I personally wouldn't mind if I was guaranteed it wasn't used for data mining or other reasons.

I seriously doubt that, especially at such an early period of the game.

Personally since an automated program will always generate false positive (I.E. ban players that did nothing wrong) I would use the community to ban bots and gold sellers.

    - keep track of who reported who
    - 1 player report a bot / gold seller-> nothing (except logging increase counter, of course)
    - 10 players report the same char -> begin to log this char activity
    - 50 players reports not in the same guild-> ban account automatically
    - if all 50 reporting players are in the same guild -> have a human review the log

    - if there's an appeal against the ban, have a human review the log and decide of a perma ban or remove suspension (with compensation)

    to avoid abusing
    - if a same player (on any of his char) reported several times a bot that was later proved to be a legit player -> warn him and ignore his reports for 30 days; continue to log his reports
    - if the same player still continue to make false reports -> ban him.

have to still to find a solution to avoid that gold sellers spam this system by randomly report any players, which would create confusion and make the system uneffective

Note : replace 50 by whichever number you feel appropriate...

No way to auto banning fro player reports. That will be abused; I would be pissed off of my account got banned from a briefer.

As VPN and Proxies are easy to be detected, just ban the use of those services and chinese IPs. Also ban the Romanian IPs as they are well known for their little gold farming companies they have there.

Not a solution, many legit players (for example students in a campus with a firewall that block the game) cannot play without proxy-like techniques.

And there may be legit Romanian players... who knows...

Students should be studying and not spending money they don't really have on monthly subbed games ;)

What in the... there are plenty of people who use VPNs for good reasons. Also you are just saying ban Romanians, I lived in Romania for a while and that is just the most ridiculous suggestion.

You are absolutely right. Students should have no right to relieve stress. Participating in social events (even online) is costing them time they could keep their noses in the books. While we are at it... they shouldnt be sleeping either, nor visiting their family.

Back in Lineage 2, when a Bot report would come, a GM would appear, look at the behavior for about 30 seconds and in whispers ask simple questions like: Can you tell me how much is 5 times 6?

The moment the GM knew it was a bot he would ban the account. Isn't is easier to do something like this in game?
