Boat Mounts

Well this one was fishing with Clan Claws at the weekend. We were following rivers to find more fishy puddles.

Well the thought occurred to this one would life not be easier and a bit faster with small personal boats that perhaps take up the space of a usual mount? So much less swimming.

Something between a barrel and a boat - there could be many different styles - coin to be made from this yes!

If a mount can know to dismount when at a river then cannot a boat know when you are on a river to sail down it?

All these boats and yet you never see any sailing anywhere - so curious. Perhaps it is time to change this?

I see some limitations, as in there is no real Phsyics in water flow and behaviour. They would probably have to change all the water in the game, which is quite a big thing to do.

With that said, I would totally buy that!

It would be cool to cruise down one of the many rivers all around the place.

Seems like a lot of work for something that wouldn't get much usage since fishing nodes are on the coast and having the traverse water is rare.

Saying that, a barrel mount could be fun. Floats on the water, rolls down hills.

Barrel rider achievement unlocked.

Actually this one often swims down rivers to find a fishy hole - follow a river you find a lake - then you find the sea.

I always kind of disappointed when Morrowind came out that when you went on the silt strider's you didn't go on an actual ride around the island to your destination. Even now when I take an alt through Morrowind I get a little sad thinking about it

Well this one assumes that if you used the boat in such infested waters then they could. This one was thinking more of a relaxing sail down a slow moving river on a sunny day or something, rather than trying to outrun the meat eating seafood.

Yeah, I think it was in WOW (could be mistaken) that you could see the landscape go by during airborne fast travel (before personal flying mounts), and boats docked/undocked on a regular schedule. It wasn't perfect, but kinda neat. I totally expected the Silt Strider to do something similar. I rode a Silt Strider exactly one time, probably on the day of release, and have since forgotten they even exist.

That is so much premium 3A option compared to current situation.
You would need new animations in mounting and dismounting the vessel, also rework of all ponds and every little river with flags where you can sail and where not, cos keeping the mount flags won't work. If you keep current but reversed flag for deep/shallow water it would be extremely hard and annoying to navigate co it would fell to player assesment how close to bank you can sail without dismounting.
In perfect execution it would be that you can practically scrape bank with boat without dismounting.
Keeping the current system would annoy players with unexpected dismounting in cases where player assessed it can navigate but in reality it is to shallow.
Uh... Nice AAA idea but damn, a lot of work. All rivers should be revisited and flagged where boat can navigate, mount flags are not really applicable imho.

But we'll, good idea anyway.

I was actually going to suggest that, with something like a percentage bar that shows how close they are to chewing all the way through. And you can row with oars to go faster to reduce the amount of time spent in the water, but they can chew up the oars as well. I was thinking this would mainly be for trying to traverse Lake Rumare in Cyrodiil.

I was sort of wishing for a houseboat you could travel around on. Or, I remember WoW had a raft you could push yourself around on and fish from. Would be awesome.

Next thing you know fishing will be a quest line in the game asking us to go out to the water and fish with a chance of us being attack by a giant fish that instantly knocks us out of our boats and we all know what happens next, instant death. That giant fish would be a world boss and only certain abilities would be allowed in the boat making killing said boss very hard and would require a full group of 20+ players do to the limitation on abilities.

Here is the kicker, new BiS gear will only be dropped by said overland boss.

I don't know that many of the waterways in the game would be deep enough for boats, but I do wish we could have some watery adventures and have the ability to spawn boats.

My dream was always to get a new zone that was designed around the idea of using boats to get between small islands with actual threats in the water. Add in an ability bar with skill designed for everyone to use while in boats (plus fishing of course) and it could be a lot of fun. Something that has longed bugged me is that we're constantly meeting pirates in the game, but we never get to see them in their element.

If it’s a mount it will just spawn when you press h and in deep enough water. If it follows the rules of the mount then the direction is determined by the player. It may be a little weird to see dinghies and rafts going in opposite directions on a river but it’s not implausible.

No need for physics engine.

Boats can always be poled or rowed against the current. It's just slower that way....

They could talk the 'running on mount' glitch and turn it into a feature for the new Barrel Mount. You just run backwards instead, in order for it to go forward.

could be a scripting problem, as in too hard on the server. this is why we will never see flying mounts.

I think you're more likely to have some kind of aqua-animal mount. Otherwise the devs couldn't justify how slaughterfish are impeding your progress in trying to go off-map. (They ate through the metal hull of your dwemer boat?)

But yeah, water mounts. Swimming has been slow enough for a long time. NWO has had personal watercraft for a long time.
Or just upgrade everyone to flight. That's what FFXIV did.

It would allow circumventing deep waters where you are not supposed to be able to short cut.
