Is 3rd person mode bad for mages, or is it just me?

Does anyone else find that playing in 3rd person for a mage is a huge pain in terms of reliably hitting your target? Because even though it makes noticing hostile AOEs much easier, I’m constantly finding that the targeting reticle basically gets lost in the noise during a battle and as a result I get a significant DPS loss. Does anyone else have this problem, or is it just me? And if so, is there a way to mitigate it?

Just you. 3rd person is best way to play at anything higher then overland content.

Not just you. Even though 3rd person is better than first, it does make finding your target reticle amidst lots of sparks and fire more challenging and can therefore slow targeting speed in a frantic environment. Still better than 1st person though.

I just look in the general direction i want to throw my spells. Things go where they need to just fine.

Now, what may help you is to Center the camera Horizontally. Stock, it is over the right shoulder, so what your looking at is not really where your reticule is pointing. Make this change in Settings, Camera options.

If course, i still get the occasional rat or spider intercepting my skills or ultimate grrr. But the View type will not help that. At all.

Can be hard to target a particular in a sea of junk. I haven't found 1st person to help too much. Tab target isn't perfect but it definitely works pretty reliably (you can bind it somewhere easy to click; I do for tanking).

I didn't like the over the shoulder angle either and changed it to be centered with the character as well. Much more comfortable with that type of setting. I also stay zoomed out a fair bit while in combat, to get the benefits of awareness while using 3rd person.

I played first person for a while after launch. Proved it could be done for most casual content. Overland and delves, to be sure. I have been third person for years, though. If I could get better awareness in first person, I might have stuck with it longer. The "red circles" need to be 3D, with height, for that to work.

I have mine centered, too.

Not for me bar the rare case where you are fighting a particularly large/tall boss at close to medium range.
