So in the announcement I believe it was Rich who said the game will be 30GB smaller on disc after the new big update. Makes me wonder what the difference will be, if any, for people like me who only have digital copies

We'll all have to download the full game again, just now 50GB instead of 80.5 -

✭✭✭Right. Everyone will have to do a complete re-install of the game, but to the OPs question, you will have more disk space available after the Update than you do now.

Since the majority of the size of the game is art and sound files I would guess that any reduction in size is compression or optimization related. Textures especially can be trimmed way down.
If they did an optimization pass I could easily see the game drop down 30% in installed size.1 -

Nanfoodle✭✭✭✭✭They will have cleaned up allot of data not needed on the install footprint. Maybe junk all the way back to launch 6 years ago. My guess you may even see that data you use to play the game may go up as well. Fact is, this game was never optimized well and Zen is finally getting how important it is to put money and effort into that.1 -

Yup, this seems to be a big part of what they're doing:
"As part of the client changes above, we will be moving to faster/newer/better compression libraries for art fixtures and character loading—these are two of the most “expensive” loading tasks"
