So yeah I play with a PS4 controller on PC and for quite a while I've notice the vast disadvantage when it comes to PvP even when dueling in the Overaland. Weapon swaps take forever, potions often miss to fire unless you completely keep your character 100% static, every other person outruns or simply backpedals all your attacks, aim to one enemy player and skills land on another one, of all things that I hate to do I have to bunny hop to land certain ranged skills even on flat open field and finally aiming speed in general is way slow even with settings at max. So I was wondering if this had anything to do with a combination of using Steams gamepad settings plus gamepad mode on PC or is the gamepad mode due to a much needed review and fix on PC?

PS: The reason I play with a controller is because since the NES and glorious arcade days all the way up to PS3 I've been gaming on gamepads and joysticks for the most and only played RTS games on PC so my cognitive reaction in this game wouldn't be the best on keyboard and mouse.

The easiest way to find out would be to try some basic actions using a mouse and keyboard and see if they appear to be more responsive...

    agree 100%
puts you at disadvantage in combat and also the ui is horrible. :unamused:
gamepad mode sadly has been neglected by zos forever, i doubt it's a steam issue...

still i wouldn't give up the comfort of my ps4 controller for anything :innocent:
i don't pvp much these days, in pve it's not that much of an issue for me luckily

but i hope one day they will fix these issues.

Is PS4 controller support native in ESO now? Forgive my possible ignorance, but I've been under the impression that ESO on PC has native XInput support (the XBox controller standard) but PlayStation controllers need to go through a special driver to translate into XInput for the game.

The extra middleware would inevitably add some input lag if that's still the case. Input lag can be a real drag in any fight.

OP, I completely understand the muscle memory Issue with controller vs K/M. As an older Gen-Xer who grew up with early joysticks and paddles, then NES pads and PS controllers, I sort of missed the switch to K/M gaming on PC -- I can remember when K/M was an awkward stand-in for specialty (sometimes expensive) PC gamepads. I'm not particularly a fast-twitch gamer anyhow.

My experience with the XBox controller in ESO is that it works fine, so maybe if you don't like the XBox controller layout, there may be a 3rd-party controller which uses XInput but is laid out more like a PS4 controller.

They dont. I have tested extensively. Mouse and keyboard suffers from the same input issues as gamepad, assuming you are using a wired one.

I got reported by some of the top players for macroing, and i use a controller, so lets not lie here. With the right tweaks controller is just as good, if not better because more fluid movement.

I use a PS4 controller too, have to use DS4windows to convert it into Xbox inputs. Recently, I've noticed some big issues with the circle and square button.

If I hold down circle, it will open the guild menu and enable my left stick to act like a mouse instead of moving my character, it starts to act like a hyper sensitive right stick.

Same thing happens with square, but it just enables the aiming, no guild menu.

Not sure why it's doing this. I have a feeling it's steam since steam started recognizing my controller on boot up.

I personally don't notice much input lag, keyboard and mouse is a little more responsive, but since I come from PS4, it's been too long and hard for me to switch. Controller just feels right.

Oh and clicking my right stick is my weapon swap, left on d-pad is sneak. Way easier. Highly recommend.

not native, but steam does that for you. works really well. i tried the driver workaround before and had issues, i'm glad i switched to steam. works automatically, no third-party program or custom remapping needed. :) highly recommend it!

Are you playing on a standard controller? If so then yeah, I can see why you're having issues in PvP. I don't PvP much, but when I did I remember feeling at a disadvantage because I had to take my thumb off of the left joystick to weapon swap or use a potion (left D-pad and up D-pad, I think), which meant that I stopped moving or otherwise couldn't do a few things while I did that.

The solution came unintentionally- I have small hands and had been using (and breaking) those crappy PowerA mini controllers. I ended up purchasing a more fancy controller to try (Razer Wolverine) that has four extra controls- two paddles underneath that I leave un-mapped, and two additional trigger buttons. I've mapped potions to the extra right trigger and weapon swap to the extra left trigger and with that, the issues went away.

Re. your other issues, I've tested those out on K/M as well, and they're present there too, so it's not a controller thing.

Honestly, I can't imagine NOT playing on a controller... people are always stunned when they find out that I use one, since I think they expect me to be at a massive disadvantage. Nope... my LA/second ratio is as good as people who play on K/M, and I have no problems weaving. I think the disadvantage that people think is due to controllers is actually the lack of access to addons on console, where probably 95% of controller users play.

I think that re-mapping your potion and weapon swap buttons so that you don't have to take your thumb off of the left joystick will be massively beneficial.

I play with an x-box controller, it’s more comfortable. I also keep dropping the controllers on a hardwood floor and am on my 4th.

Someone mentioned in another thread you can play with the settings and increase the turn speed. I lost the post and after reading it the turning speed is crazy slow.

Being hard wired helps make it more responsive.

XB1 original controller, thing has stood the test of time =P. Elite is also a good option, but the sticks wear down, so i just like to get original xb1 ones.

My controller setup is this. Also takes into account first three slots of Dressing Room.

to change camera speed go into your usersetting file (found in documents/elder scrolls online/live) and scroll down until you find SET GamepadSensitivityThirdPerson.2 "2.85999990" and adjust them, these are my settings. you must log out completely after each change and do not adjust camera in game after or you will reset the values

Yeah there are some things, such as graphics, keybinds, and addons, you cannot manage in the gamepad ui, but everything else is available. I pretty much only have to touch my keyboard for those things, everything else i can do with my controller. And typing obv. =P

I use an xbox controller and it's ok once you sort out some of the issues.

Like in game sens even maxed is unplayable, people can literally walk around you and you can't hit them, you will need to go into the game folder and change the sens.

Keybindings are also odd, needing to press both keys for bash and ult for example caused me many issues, like only one of the buttons pressing instead of using your ult. So often I would use a buff instead of doing my damage ult, losing me the fight.

Only issues I have with controller now is a very rare bug where a different skill will go off rather than the one I actually pressed (sucks trying to execute someone and just buffing instead) or the dumb fact I can't unbind first person. So many times I press weapon swap and the pad puts me into first person instead, then I need to waste a gcd changing back instead of healing or something.

I wish they would fix some of the controller issues.

I’ve never had those issues, that’s odd.

The main thing that I dislike is you have to block before you can dodge roll. An actual dodge roll bind would be ideal.

I found about a half year ago dodge roll became less responsive and something changed, I’m not sure what.
