What classes should be

Every class and spec is capable of every role. Just look at PvP, what class and spec is not a healer and tank there?

Yes, classes SHOULD be better in some things than others but thanks to people like most of the ones in this thread here, my magblade now has tank and some less than medicore heal skills while the dps part turned into a big pile of doggypoo in PvP (all projectiles, easy to avoid). Meanwhile it still has no good burst heal and is squishy af, if you dont want to play some zero dmg tank build. Once it had huge dmg output but was squishy but all dmg got neutered so much, its just a worse magsorc now.
The class SHOULD hit hard and be squishy or just give it a decent burst heal, if you wanna water down class identity even more.

I disagree. What is it about Class 1 that means it should do more damage than Class 2? Nothing. That’s just bad game design.

And being ‘able to do more damage’ isn’t something that stems from class identity.

That should stem from player choice in skills and tactics. So a player might be able to do more damage by filling their skill bars with offensive skills (sacrificing heals or shields), choosing offensive gear and weapon sets (again sacrifice protection or resistance) and, say, attacking from stealth and being a better player. That might be fantastically powerful if they got the first blow, but terrible if they were attacked.

Class identity should help define each class so each feels distinct and very identifiable, while making each equally viable for all roles (dd, tank, healer and PvP). A magblade dd should feel different and encourage a different play style to a mag DK dd. But both should be similarly powerful (subject to the player’s choices, skills and ability).

Which means in a NB case, they should have access to a similar burst heal compared to other classes (whether that is a specific NB skill or a separate skill line skill like Vigour) and be able to choose to use from a range of single target, AoE, ranged and close offensive skills.

At the moment in both PvE and PvP, skills, tactics and player ability seem to be less effective than protection and healing in one on one fights. So my tanky characters will do better at soloing WBs than my harder hitting, less tanky ones. And that’s the real challenge that ZOS and players face.

I've always felt that classes in eso were a not so good idea. A bunch of skill lines for people to choose from would offer way more flexible and diverse gameplay. Hard to balance though

All classes should be able to do everything, to similar degrees, some classes will be better at something just because of their toolkit, like dk is better at tanking for example, that is fine.

What should differentiate classes is how they play.

honestly if we could go back in time best would be to design eso with a classless system...with a purely skill based system where you can mix and match from learning different skill lines (like the weapon or guild lines but a lot more of those) and have maybe class templates as "ideas" like they are in other elder scrolls games...

oh and you'd also implement a companion system similar to swtor

    i'd be so glorious

Could not agree with you more! Think of the possibilities if we could mix and match all the abilities in the game

So let me get this straight.
You think it’s ok for healer classes to have super high damage and the assassin class to be the best tank?
    What?
Ok. This is why eso is going downhill.
It used to be that all classes were unique. Now they take off and homogenise all the things that made the classes good at their roles.
Play how you want is a paradox.
Because if you want to 1 shot people naked with a ice staff you would be able to do that.
This is a mmo not a RPG.
The classes need to have limits.
I’m not saying nb tank should be super bad. I’m saying dk should be the best tank.
If I were to rate it out of 5,
Nb would be a 3 and dk a five.
But for dd, nb would be a 5, and dk a 3.
That is how fair balance works.
Otherwise when one class gets a buff everyone will be the same class.
As was mentioned above, it’s eso the clone wars.

Edit: this is why role players shouldn’t be on the forums.

The original 4 classes were key’d around a role but not 100%. They want to push the play as you want, so the new classes were designed around that.

The problem is that you can’t change all the skills in the original 4 without pee’ing off a lot of people. So either change the 4 classes bit by bit over a load of patches or in my view add new skill lines to classes, so people can play any classes any role. But would be good if you have different play styles and sets that would benefit one but not the other and not make them all the same.
