I recently ordered a new MacBook and wanted to try out ESO. I’ll be running Windows 10 to play it. I’ve been playing on Xbox on and off since launch, but I’m unclear about the best way to play it on PC. Do I get it on Steam, buy a code, or get it from the Zenimax online store while it is on sale? I’ve not really gamed on a PC before and I heard that ESO had some problems on Steam. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

ESO has a MacOS client and running on Macbooks. Granted it has stability problems with crashes here and there, but performance wise it does not matter really if you playing under MacOS or Windows Bootcamp, it's the same hardware and the performance output will be similar under both OS.

I wouldn't recommend Steam, just get it from Zeni store.

The recent change to the MAC OS only allowing 64 bit borked the launcher. I think that was fixed just as Catalina came out of Beta. So the early adopters were affected. I think the MAC side of things has been smoother in the last couple of years other than the Apple inflicted Catalina issues.

Anyway, glad you got the game and got it installed.

Thanks. Enjoying it so far. Yeah, Catalina has affected a lot of software. The transition has been kinda painful.

I’m gonna try the Windows version at some point to compare. One problem I’m having with the Mac client is that the control scheme for my Xbox controller is all kinds of strange, and I am having trouble binding buttons. My friend on PC said he selected gamepad mode and the controller behaved exactly like it did on Xbox.

@Khrogo Just out of curiosity, why not use the Mac client? Why go through windows?

Edit: Ah I see the answer above. 🙂

Use steam. it protects your purchase. if you ever loose your account for any reason, you still have it on steam and you can always start over from scratch.

Yeah, that's not how any of this works. Protects your purchase? Everything is saved server side. I generally prefer steam for most of my games, but I dont see how it adds any value to this particular title. It's just one more thing to cause issues, and that list is already way too long.

Also, as someone who has been browsing these forums for way too long, I will tell you that steam issues are the source of a lot of forum complaints. I cant count how many times I have seen someone asking how to separate their account from steam. Unless they are practically giving the game away on some steam sale, I see a lot of downside and zero upside.

Op dude. If you don’t listen to anything else listen to this: DO NOT BUY ESO FROM STEAM.

Frequently enough you won’t be able to login using steam’s launcher. As a work around I had to buy the base game a second time in order to login when steam logins were crapped. Do yourself this favor. By the game from Zenimax or Bethesda or whoever.

Blah blah blah. I play on steam and 99.99% of the time it's perfectly fine. The very rare occasion of a problem is far out weighed by the other benefits of having your account tied to steam, in my opinion.

Saying things like "frequently enough you won't be able to login using steam's launcher" is just spreading a falsehood.

I call bs! What? You WORK for Steam or something. It’s happened more than once and often enough to be deemed frequent.

IF it had happened ONCE (to match your 0.01 percent of the time) then MAYBE that wouldn’t be bad. Though, REALLY, if YOU couldn’t log on because of Steam whilst everyone NOT using Steam COULD, I’d say that’s ONE time to many.

Look, if you HAVEN’T bought the game through Steam, DON’T. Do yourself a favor. You’re buying it to PLAY IT...right.

Avoid Steam. The ESO site will sometimes discount the game. 9.99 I think.

Steam sometimes discounts the game. All the arguments against steam are pretty poor to be honest. ☺

I play the game everyday for years through steam with no problems. So who is right? I don't deny there has been issues now and again with updates but the problem seems to be far far better now and I've not experienced it in ages. I was pointing out that what you said was false because you said "frequently enough you won't be able to login using steam's launcher" which directly contradicts my everyday experience.

    @Neoealth

Not picking a fight, just genuinely curious as to what you view as the upside to steam? Is it simply organization? Even if there are no real downsides in your experience, what are the benefits? I play most games on steam. It drives me crazy to no end when I want to play a title on another platform, but truthfully, my preference would be to not need any of them.

That is a fair question. My answer is mostly for organization as you suggest. But also I love being able to create screenshots easy through steam and being able to sort and name them onto the steam cloud. Plus being able to display those screen shots on my steam profile.

I also built the steam badges for eso and collected the game cards. It's also convenient for managing the eso+ subscription. And I'm able to chat with my friends on steam while I'm in game using the steam overlay chat window. Very useful.

One other possible reason, which I'm not sure is true or not, which is why I say possible, is I imagine it makes my account more secure. After all if someone stole my account details, I would have proof that I was the original account holder since it's associated with my steam account. But that is more of an after thought, the main reasons being what I just mentioned previously.

You can make screenshots from a PC just as easy. They are saved locally and optionally in the Windows cloud.
Nobody can steal your login credentials, unless he also steals your mail to receive your code if he is in another location.
Nobody can steal your game, since you can always login to the TES site and download it again from there.

I primarily play through steam, since that's where I first bought the game. While I don't have any real reason to recommend playing through steam, the login authentication issues that were quite common in the first half of 2018 have gone back to being extremely rare.

I would expect native boot ( dual boot win/osx) would offer better performance than a vm and eso is horribly cpu hungry, but the vm makes it easier to switch back to mac os.

I’d read so many horror stories about the Mac client, I didn’t expect much. In fact, I didn’t think it would on the latest MacOS. To be honest, it’s not as bad as I imagined. Still need some time with it to come to a conclusion. Playing on Medium settings, my fans don’t even come on, which is peaceful. Lol.

Are add-ons cross-platform? Or are they Mac or PC? Away for a few days, but looking forward to installing some when I get home.
