Can I improve shields?

I just crafted at a Hunding's Rage woodworking station a shield, but the shield does not say "Hundings Rage" nor can I upgrade it with resins.

Is this normal? The Hunding's Rage sword I was able to upgrade to legendary without issues.

You can craft normal non set items at a crafting station you made a normal shield. Not a Hunding’s Rage

You need to select the set tab when at a set crafting station otherwise your just making an ordinary item.

I understand that but you can still craft “normal”
gear at any station.

Wow I forgot all about this it’s been so long since I got all nine traits. They could just be missing some research nice catch.
