If you gonna go with this system at least implement a 2-way factoring with a Smartphone app token or hw token.
And as a Guild Master it´s even more annoying when ie. recruiting people, they know me as Prime on Facebook and on our Forum.
And in-game I am known as (to name a few examples)
- "Who the hell is @myaccount ?! This dude is sending me Friend Request all the time."
- "Pime, can you send me a Guild Invite plz..."
invite from @myaccount , Declined.

Pretty annoying since not everyone is used to MMO:s and this type of social communication.

Nina✭I must say I found it spooky when I discovered this. I didn't understand it clearly in the beta because I wasn't so active and not in any guild. It makes at least me feel vulnerable even if it also offers some odd, to me, advantages of being able to block whole accounts with a few simple clicks. The same few simple clicks can be used by anyone to find your account name though.
I've gotten used to it, I guess, but given that I've had odd login and disconnect messages in this game than I've ever had in others, does the additional visibility make me jumpy. I guess friendly-vlad above would call it paranoia, but feelings are the most powerful motivators we got so can never (EVER!) be dismissed entirely.
Vote: 1, but 2a is also an improvement (for my sense of security at least).1 -

Thats uneeded. /ignore is account wide. So if someone was being a troll or greifer, the incentive for them not to is already there.

The @handle is shown in the ignore list and it shows you the @handle when you ignore them in chat.

1) Hacking: Yes you can argue all you want about having a mindbogglingly good password that you cant even remember without having to access your password keeper app on your phone or computer. But the fact of the matter is everyone has access to one half of your account information.
If you are suggesting that, having access to your account name, in some way reduces the potential security of your account, then you are most definitely completely wrong. What matters is the strength of your password. If you don't understand this now, then you never will.

Lololol. Dude, having 1,000,000 keys and knowing only one of them will actually open the door in front of you is very time-consuming.

i agree. in beta i did feedback regarding this. in fact my wife too was in beta. what did i do? asked her if i could try hacking her account- i won. none of her information was past information (station name/account name+password) and it wasnt long before i was in. i understand that you can change your station name, and i love that chat is account bound not character bound. however, i would have changed my account name for sure had i known that 1) my beta account persisted into live 2) it would have been on display. having to have a rubrics cube to log in can be tedious sometimes especially when above have stated that "giving 50%" of the puzzle is not advisable.
while i also acknowledge that the game only "recognizes" my computer, i dont think its worth the risk. i say keep chat account bound but display only the character name.I will work. I will save. I will sacrifice. I will endure. I will fight cheerfully and do my utmost, as if the whole issue of the struggle depended on me alone.

True, but youre forgetting that there is more than one way to crack an egg; unfortunately, a lot of people recycle their usernames and/or passwords, and providing half of that info is making a hacker's job just that much easier. In a perfect world, every site you visit and have a username for will have some kind of basic security measure in place to prevent brute-force hacks, but they don't. And brute-force is not the only method. Agreed, people generally shouldn't use their actual names in their email addresses, but that lack of foresight shouldn't be punished by their account name being relayed to a host of people who don't need to know it.
Moreover, I hate looking for a guildmate's @handle when im trying to send them a damn shirt, lol. I just want to pick the character by the name I actually remember and call them by. But that's just laziness on my part. Doesn't change the fact that customization is usually a good thing, particularly for those people who are prickly about their privacy (even if it is in your opinion, illusory), and in my case, for people who just like to tweak things for ease and comfort. An option to hide or screen your account name should be implemented, and asap.

Banegrivm✭✭As an RP'er I found this really disconscerting. It's "anti RP" in fact. I figured with a game that has so many tools at it's disposal for the promotion of role playing ala story that guilds would have been handled better. This stifles RP between characters when you look at global names and not character names. I liked the idea of having the characters and global names tied together like how is done with Cryptic Studios games. Character names should show up in guild chat, NOT global names. I've never played an MMO where guilds were done like this ever. It's still strange getting used to seeing no guild tags. The whole 5 guilds thing is just bad for community. Guilds should be something special that helps foster a sense of community, not just "something everyone does for the moment".Banegrivm Shadowblight

MORE hacking? no. make the job EASIER? yes. dont be so quick to talk crap like you know more. in 13 years of gaming i have NEVER had my account hacked. saying "opens you up more to hacking" means for me to get hacked once would constitute "more hacking." its like saying the two keys for the nukes shouldnt be so far apart..... they HAVE to be far apart so they cant both be turned at the same time by one person. while you probably dont need to set them apart, why bother making it EASIER for the wrong person?I will work. Now that that's out of the way, here's some Security 101. In order to log into your account, you need to provide 2 things: your account name and your password. These are called your login credentials. When you enter those, the system attempts to match one to the other. If it finds a match, it will let you proceed. If there is no match, i.e. either one of those has been entered incorrectly, the login will fail. Simply knowing someone's account name will not be enough to hack their account. Also, simply knowing someone's password will not be enough to hack their account. You need to have both credentials in order to login. In recent years, systems will also have added layers of security in the form of security questions, IP logging, authenticators, security codes and the like, but that's beside the point.
Just in case someone didn't understand what I just wrote, here it is again, in no uncertain terms: your account name is equally as important to your account's security as your password is. What Zenimax is doing is, in fact, a major security flaw.
I support the OP. I'd like the system to be changed into something like what GW2 uses. When you add a player to your friends/ignore/guild/whatever, it adds their account to the appropriate list. However, the list displays the name of the character they played last, not their account name. It worked just fine there, no reason it shouldn't here.0 -

The only feature of the account name I like is when I ignore people it ignores their account. That can be retained without revealing that account.
I have to admit I was dumbfounded when I made my first alt (in Ebonheart Pact) and was seeing the guild chat from the guild I joined on my first character which was in Aldermi Dominion.2 -
jaytin44✭✭Since we are pretty much forced to join a guild to sell items I really think only your character name should be shown unless you choose otherwise. I am not a big fan of all your characters getting thrown into any guild you join automatically either.1
