Another gorgeous light motif, utterly, horrifyingly ruined by tassets (hip protectors)

Just voicing my renewed frustration. This time it's the Stags Of Z'en light chest motif, but in truth almost all light armor looks awful with tassets, as has been noted many times before. So much cool artwork lost.

At least with shoulders you can swap them for something different, or--as I have done in one extreme case--go naked in the shoulder slot. Only in some vet DLC content do I notice it's gone, and then I put it on for the sake of the group (along with a costume). I would buy another expansion that introduced only the option to selectively hide pieces of gear, but only if tassets were included in that.

I don't mind the shoulders so much (I tend to use costumes anyway when shoulders bother me) but the tassets and crotch plates are just objectionable all around.

I get why they went that direction - someone had the idea that armor should be ARMOR. And they chose the medieval sort of armor because (one assumes) they thought that the period approximated 2nd era imperatives.

I really think they should have never tried to replicate any given era of earth-centric armor from the get-go. It's just annoying. I want my people to look good while adventuring. The armor in this game makes that a real issue. (Nope, I'm not advocating the stuff Tera labels armor....)

The thing I don't like about hip flaps, and the crotch flaps is that they clip with things.

If I see clipping in the armor style it is a no-go for me.

They specially do it to sell costumes. I.e. armor is armor, if you wanna more clothes-like outfit welcome to CS shop. Though there are dozens of motifs without flip-flops or with very small and fitting ones.

Not all medeival armors had hip flaps, leather armor was worn with cloth armor, metal armor or plates were mostly worn with cloth underneath with no hip flaps.
Metal armor. Suits were not common and were mostly worn by paid individuals for the ruling elite for personal defenseor other matters. Most armors from the past had no hip protectors nor was the wearers body fully covered.

I wouldn't mind them if they weren't floating in mid air and clipping through the weapons.

I wish tassets had their own armor slot so we could leave them off.
I already do that with shoulders in PvE gear.

Yeah, I get that, but when you have so-called "armour" that is really not armour, in any practical way, at all (as some of it isn't) and then it still has tassets, or crotch flaps, below a deep cut V neck, or a bare midriff, you really do wonder what the point is supposed to be...

That partially covered chests and bare midriffs are OK, but no one must catch a glimpse of a non heavily armoured hip, or crotch?

    Makes no sense.

Plus, you can fight in a completely non-armoured costume, if you want.

Up to and including a Nordic Bathing Towel.

So, why the insistence on always making armour so armoury, but only in this very specific way and with no option to change it?

Okay, I'll list them, motifs which have no hip guards or very small and non-flopping decorative ones, at least in one weight:

    - Abah's watch
    - Ashlander
    - Assassin's league
    - Bloodforge
    - Buoyant Armiger
    - Coldsnap Goblin
    - Dark Brotherhood
    - Ebony
    - Elder Argonian
    - Fang Lair
    - Fanged Worm
    - Frostcaster
    - Grim Harlequin
    - Honor Guard
    - Huntsman
    - Mazzatun
    - Minotaur
    - Order of the Hour
    - Pyandonean
    - Sapiarch
    - Silver Dawn
    - Sunspire
    - Trinimac
    - Worm Cult

Though I agree that many styles are ruined by hip guards, but still there are plenty of options to choose and many of medium size hip guards not listed here are fine when combined with proper leg piece.

Also this is race/body type dependent, one style can look fit, i.e. not floating on one toon and on the other one it will be a mess with floating hip guards and weapons...

We just need Hide Shoulders, Hide Tassets, and Hide Tabard options at the Outfit station. Seriously, a very minimal effort here could make a huge cosmetic improvement to the game.

You remember how "hide shield" option ended last time :D (dungeon delver invisibility)
I guess it's not that simple in ESO engine

Unfortunately "Hide Tassets" wouldn't be as trivial as the others, since they're just part of a larger piece (Chest). They'd have to rebuild/redefine the Chest models to select which parts would be hidden. Unlike Helmet/Shoulders/etc, which are a full Motif part. :/

Yes and no. It's true they are part of the existing (chest) model, but they are distinctly separate within the chest model. We know this because tassets all have their own animation. It is a bit of apples vs oranges, but not horribly difficult. Automation could be used to flag those parts within existing chest models, and opt to render them with alpha 0 (invisible). Of course, your game client needs to do this separately for each and every player character visible on screen, but it already does similar work (in a different way as you pointed out) with all the existing character appearance parameters.

I've been spoiled by better costuming system in other game so in ESO I'll manage with bath towel and hat. At least until basic functionality like hiding any slot is implemented.

i think the main issue is a combination of their engine combined with the way they have segmented armors and need to make able everything is mix and match...

I think they could make cooler armors when you A) didnt have to fill every outfit slot for a design and certain motifs werent built around all spots filled B,) not everything needs to work perfectly together

As an example, i think SWTOR has a lot more varied and a lot more interesting armors / armor mechanics, with capes, animations etc...

Which would be fine, if costumes weren't such an abomination.

What they need to do, if they're going down that route of monitising it, is to sell better designed motifs. I'm sure there would be a significant demand for motifs that, you know, actually looked good.

Can't stand these things and been griping about them for ages. Shoulders as well. Some of the armor design in this game is embarrassingly bad. It's why I switched all my characters to costumes and never looked back. Can't remember the last time I used an outfit station. It's not even a part of the game for me anymore.

The 2020 announcement Q&A hinted that we might--finally--get some desperately needed visuals. /FingersCrossed. For me, it's kind of the last hope. Friends, visuals, and RP are all that keeps me here now. Combat changes will introduce all manner of tedium over gear, skills/trees, CP, re-learning, renewed imbalance/rebalance cycles, etc., and without some spectacularly improved visuals to offset that, I fear it will be the end of my time here.

Having spent extended periods in both historical and modern armor, I try not to look at fantasy armor too critically.

    But,

    /rant on

One of the problem I have with ESO's tassets is that they are not positioned as they would be if they were actually armor. They're not positioned to cover the crotch and the front of the thighs and pelvis. ESO put them on the outside of the hips. I have yet to see historical armor position the tassets in this way. So not only do they ruin the look a lot of armor (and robes!) but they are not even in a position to offer realistic protection. And they interfere with sheathed weapons, further ruining the appearance.

ESO tried to replicate realistic armor and failed, miserably.
