Shrouded Dungeons that require torches or Momentos - Thoughts?

I was travelling through Deshaan today and lightning struck. Sound crackled and the light flashed as heavy rain began to pour. I could almost feel the humidity in the air humming with electricity.
It got me thinking about dynamic weather conditions and why I had not seen darker storms across the land of Tamriel and beyond. My eyes bear witness to countless storms across Elsweyr, caused by the release of the dragons. Really a sight to be seen if you have not already.
But there has not been darkened skies that would require a torch.
Which lead me to my idea of craft-able or blacksmith purchasable torches for dungeon exploring.
I know that there has been the implementation of the Crown purchasable Treasure Hunter personality. Which is great by the way. So I guess that would cause a bit of an issue with some.
Anyway's back to the idea.
Darkened and shrouded "fog of war map" like dungeons where you would require a torch or bright momentum to traverse and explore. I feel that it would make momentos more useful and used than they currently are and something to aim for for new players starting main story quests. I understand that the older dungeons probably won't be reworked with this mechanic. But maybe something for the future content.
What really resonated well with me in this vein of topic was the mission in Craglorn, Rahni'Za, School of Warriors, Trial of the true path. There was a section of the mission where you had to traverse a dark tunnel while being led through by an ancient Akaviri Scholars ghost. And another in the Thieves guild quest-line where you had to use a lantern to beat back the darkness from consuming you.
Also another consuming darkness in the clockwork main story-line.
It was great to have a change from the well lit dungeons we have grown accustomed to, I mean honestly who is lighting all those torches in a dungeon that has been abandoned for centuries???

Make Tamriel Dark Again?!? Tell me your thoughts

This idea has potential if handled right. I would love a few really dark dungeons to explore with a torch, or something like Magelight to let me see where I'm stepping.

Imagine how cool is there were some dungeons that had a special mechanic that required a special item to use to unlock it, like a room with another boss.

No. Just no. I'm having flahsbacks to Blackreach in Skyrim where it was so very fun to fumble around in the dark. To take that and put it in ESO, where Almalexia's is the only reliable light source makes me cringe

Well I always have Almalexia's Lantern handy to use in darker delves and at night. But if it were a super dark area the duration would definitely need increased on any lighting situation.

    Will be bugged anyway.
Also definitely not as an instanced group dungeon accessible with group finder.

As an open dungeon etc. Maybe. I wouldn't mind.

I'd rather have a cool light mechanic that requires a memento/personality instead of a movable crate mechanic.

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

Just "no," not any of this presumptuous "just silly" nonsense.

The short of it is implementing this well would require significant redesign of the game. That's not likely to happen. So while it would be neat, it is just not happening.

Played games with realistic light levels so night time was pretty black.

Most players couldn't cope so either complained, messed with their gamma or both.

All keep in mind, I'm not petitioning for the whole of Tamriel to be dark when its night, nor all dungeons to be reworked to have this torch mechanic. Just a simple, more than we currently have type of notion.

I actually LOVE games with serious dark and light cycles - however, if you're going to have a game with an actual impact to darkness, you also need to craft skills/items that provide the light you need, and balance encounters in the darkness with whatever cost you assign to providing light.

My point is, I don't think ESO really has the mechanics currently in place to add an impactful darkness mechanic without screwing up encounter balance, unless you use it solely for, like say, a puzzle/platformer area, which I don't recommend, because the ESO engine is, I'm pretty sure, lousy for platforming.

I think its a neat idea! I especially love the thought of having to use a special memento as a sort of “trigger” mechanism in a dungeon! Would make great use of all the amazing mementos we’ve collected over the years!! 😍

March of Sacrifices had a cool semi dark mechanic during hunt phase with the storm. Gets a bit dark/hard to see.....Lightless Oubliette was also a fun dark/light mech used....a few others in recent history; perhaps not as exact as how you suggest here.

Also several other cool dungeon mechanics along similar lines. I could see ZOS easily implementing this type of mechanic into any DLC dungeon or quest line.

I think as far as interesting & challenging mechanics go, ZOS has def stepped up their game in the last few DLC’s!

Cool idea, hope we see it in some capacity in the future! Thanks for sharing!

Would definitely be cool if they made a few delves like this or maybe even a dungeon. Cradle of shadows kind of has this, but not to the extent of something like command and conquer where everything you haven’t explored is black. I certainly wouldn’t want all or even most content to become like this, but would make for a cool dungeon mechanic if they did it once or twice.

The issue is the torch or source of light would need to be part of the dungeon. Considering we cannot really fight in deep dark conditions there would need to be some source of light or means to see our target.

Even in a mission in CH that is pretty much pitch black I used to do it with magelight when that shone bright. I have since used other light sources. Regardless, the npcs in that part are pretty weak.

I am sure there is a means it can be done right but it also has to fit the story, have a purpose.
  • silvermistktralasub17_ESO
There is another twist on this that perhaps most of you haven't considered. (I have to, as I have always had a difficulty with 'bright flashy lights' anyhow, as they cause multiple long-lasting afterimages). If you make a dungeon darker, we will have situations where the 'bright flashy skills' (most skills, honestly) are *even brighter* because of the contrast. The darker we make the dungeons, the more easily we will be blinded when we attempt to go into them. So, really, this is a bad idea, but one I understand that many don't think of, because they are not as often affected by the contrast. Just remember, when you ask for darker, it will make the bright lights far more dazzling, and likely impeding your combat.
