(*100% FIXED tested)Zenimax's Solution to Patch fix. (GM posted) [ error 209 ]

  • selixjm_ESO
If you are getting error 209, please try the following:
    • First, please ensure you are accessing the game via the launcher, not the .exe file.
    • Try closing out of the launcher and re-open it, then run a repair.
    • If you try to repair and it does not work, please delete all .version files in the game's sub folders and try repair again.

First of all DON'T close the launcher. If you get the error delete the files, rename them to .version.bak or move them to a separate folder. Renaming or moving are safer, telling people to arbitrarily delete stuff without backups is somewhat irresponsible, but I digress. Anyway, after that return to the launcher but DON'T close it, again DON'T close it. If you close it and reopen it then the game will want you to do a full re-install. Just click the repair button and let it run. It ran perfectly for me after that.

be aware this only gets you the play button once. its basically the same as launching without the launcher. your version will be wrong and after it figures it out you will get the same launcher error unless you get lucky and it updates correctly the next time.

Just posting that this worked for me.
I only had to delete a SINGLE .version file located here:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online\game

This got my patcher to patch! Still timing out though.

Yeah, just about thought I stuck my foot in my mouth when that same error popped up again so I tried it once more and it seems to be patching now... >.>

    Edit:

And yeah, it's still broken. ><

I deleted the Depot.version only .. Which is only causing the game to verify the files rather than redownload the whole game... Initially I was fine until the game crashed then I got the error.. hopefully getting rid of the depot.version will fix this issue.

It is currently downloading only a little bit of information that appears to have caused the problem which is about 550mb compared to the 20 gigs I had to DL for the game itself.

For many of us, this "fix" simply causes the launcher to reinstall the whole program

    A. See if all the .version files are in their directories or not.
    B. If not download the .rar file in the post and replace them based on the locations listed.
    C. If they are there delete them (not shift+delete) and carefully read the instructions in the post.
D.Be sure you are waiting for the launcher to display the Install button, DO NOT CLICK ON IT. Close the launcher and re-apply the four files.

I'm terrible at waiting, plus I'm still launching from the Beta client and yeah I know they said that's fine it will totally work and yada yada yada, but after this I'm just not sure. If I still have this problem after installing from the new client I may be a little upset. ><

  • Pandamonium0228
NiRN has the best solution. i tested this theory before seeing his post. the launcher isn't reading a certain config file that tell the game what game version its using. Left4Dead 2 use to do this to us all the time except we were able to edit the config file thru notepad and change the version number.

if you just go to the actual game.exe and launch it from there you can play. the devs need to fix there launcher itself. game files are fine. find the client eso.exe and load it from there. no need to do the razzle dazzle with the version files.

There is a solution found on Reddit that also works if you go into the game files find game/client/eso.exe and run that it will launch your game and bypass the launcher thus avoiding the error.. I will test this soon as I finish re-patching.

No, close the client then restore the files as the OP instructed from your trash can. I did this and had to hit repair 4 times with error 209 but luckily by the 5th time the thing actually is repairing and patching now. Fingers crossed the game will properly patch now.

We posted this in another thread, but want to make sure you see it, too.

If you are getting error 209, please try the following:

-First, please ensure you are accessing the game via the launcher, not the .exe file.

-Try closing out of the launcher and re-open it, then run a repair.

-If you try to repair and it does not work, please delete all .version files in the game's sub folders and try repair again.

    FIXED

--Delete the .version files. [there is 4x .version files one in each folder] (These 4 Need to be put back in their locations in the next steps)

    --Run Launcher.

    --Close Launcher.

    --Open your recycle bin.

--Restore (Puts them back for you) the .version files.

I have attached my versions for those who have lost theirs. ( you will need Winrar to open)

    >>>>>>>> Yam_of_the_Center ✭

"""This worked for me also, though I had to do it several times to get it "right."

    1) Make sure you're not running the client already when you delete the files. This will screw the process up.

    2) Go to your Zenimax Online folder (default, I believe, is in Program Files (x86).

Inside the Zenimax Online folder, delete the following files:

    Inside "Launcher" folder, delete "Bethesda.net_Launcher.version",
then back out of the "Launcher" folder into the Zenimax Online folder.

Inside "The Elder Scrolls Online" go to the "depot" folder, delete "depot.version" and go back to "TESO" folder.

Go to the "game" folder and delete "game_player.version", then back out to "TESO" folder.

Go to "vo_en" folder and delete "vo_en.version".

The above lists all four version files that need to be deleted, under the assumption that they are named the same as the ones in my folders. Basically, look for four ".version" files if you can't find those above.

    3) Launch your client. I had to launch mine as an administrator, but I've been having to do this since day one.

    4) WAIT. Wait for the client to fail to launch. Mine came up with an "ABORT" dialogue box. Close any dialogue box that appears and make certain the client is no longer running.

    5) Go to your recycle bin, select all four files, right-click "restore".

    6) Restart your client.

I now no longer have the "cannot determine version" error or the "repair" button on my client, and am back to "play." :) I hope the step-by-step helps. If clarification is needed, let me know.

There are some things I can excuse. Like the bugs? I've taken a programming class before and I know the littlest thing can just mess up your code. You miss a character somewhere, just one tiny character and the thing will still run but maybe something weird will happen. The programs I was writing weren't even that big, just a few lines of code and finding errors was still hard. I can't imagine how many lines of code ESO has and I don't envy the engineers who have to sift through it all just to find a bracket or a comma that was out of place.

Things like customer service, though? That's just inexcusable. I've submitted three in-game tickets and have gotten zero responses back. I submit a ticket online and all I get is a cookie-cutter response that doesn't solve the issue or point me somewhere useful where I can maybe troubleshoot it myself or get more information. The customer support for this game is atrocious, I'm sorry, and the lack of communication from the Devs is disconcerting as well.

I tried repairing the launcher while deleting the version files as described, it didn't immediately work. Then I updated the hosts file to use the known-to-be-working patch server and viola.
