Most of us are disgusted with the gem system, and crown crates in general.
What is so off putting about a monthly fee for everyone? Like mandatory ESO+ for everyone? Everyone wants to jump on a game that is free to play after initial purchase, but with the greedy pandering of ZOS and our constant criticism on performance, just make the game have a mandatory fee! It would give ZOS a steady income stream so they wouldn't have to worry so much about selling their souls on the crown store and could have more freedom to focus on other things.
Some players would absolutely jump ship if they were required to pay, but when the player base is just disgusted with how things are it can't be good for ZOS morale.
ESO was, at launch and for some time afterward, a subscription-required MMO. I know, because I subscribed then, and continue to subscribe now. That said, it wasn't popular in the long run, so the mandatory part was dropped.

I ended up only needing to buy 2x 15-packs as I was getting around 150 gems per 15 crates instead of the usual 100. I started with only 11 gems and hadn't opened any of this season prior. Along the way I got 4 mounts, three of which were from the most expensive "new moon" variety, plus several pets, costumes, mementos, etc. Since the crowns were bought back during the last sale, I didn't do too bad coming in around $60 for all that. As usual YMMV.
60 dollars for a pixel pet is insanely greedy.

And I haven't even felt comfortable riding it around because of the ridiculous price tag, which is sad because she goes well with my orange tiger-striped Khajiit characters!
