So I caved this weekend and bought the pet. I thought I'd share my experience since I was pleasantly surprised. I ended up only needing to buy 2x 15-packs as I was getting around 150 gems per 15 crates instead of the usual 100. I started with only 11 gems and hadn't opened any of this season prior. Along the way I got 4 mounts, three of which were from the most expensive "new moon" variety, plus several pets, costumes, mementos, etc. Since the crowns were bought back during the last sale, I didn't do too bad coming in around $60 for all that. As usual YMMV.

Yet another "I'd buy this if they'd just offer it for Crowns" item.

if the people who make these decisions were capable of shame, they'd be unbearably ashamed of themselves.
So I caved this weekend and bought the pet.

    [snip]

I didn't do too bad coming in around $60 for all that. As usual YMMV.

That's more than the basic versions of the Chapters.

I’m glad you’re happy with what you got, but for me, that is much too much to spend without knowing exactly what I’m getting, especially since most of the stuff in the Crown crates is not at all to my taste. :/

I haven't seen anybody using it, and I've heard of a lot of people who refuse to try for it just on principle. Gambling boxes are cancer, and it shouldn't be encouraged.

You're under the impression that your decision affects only yourself. This impression is incorrect. The reason the best stuff ZOS creates gets locked behind a repugnant gamble-box wall is that people reward rather than punish ZOS for doing so.

Most of us are disgusted with the gem system, and crown crates in general.

What is so off putting about a monthly fee for everyone? Like mandatory ESO+ for everyone? Everyone wants to jump on a game that is free to play after initial purchase, but with the greedy pandering of ZOS and our constant criticism on performance, just make the game have a mandatory fee! It would give ZOS a steady income stream so they wouldn't have to worry so much about selling their souls on the crown store and could have more freedom to focus on other things.

Some players would absolutely jump ship if they were required to pay, but when the player base is just disgusted with how things are it can't be good for ZOS morale.

ESO was, at launch and for some time afterward, a subscription-required MMO. I know, because I subscribed then, and continue to subscribe now. That said, it wasn't popular in the long run, so the mandatory part was dropped.

I would have bought with crowns, I'd really like that little pet it's adorable.

Certainly not buying disgusting con crates to get it though. Especially since you're forced to keep hideously ugly items that you don't already have. Why in hell they can't be traded for gems, even if we don't already own them is beyond me. It's utterly stupid.

This is (a bit) unwise to say becos you did not specify for how many crowns.
Next time Zo$ might put a new pet in the crown store for a lot more then 1000 crowns.

    Let me rephrase then -
" I would have bought with crowns at a reasonable price - which is about 300 - 400 crowns as pet average price used to be, before massive greed took a bigger hold and they ramped up some of the price to 1000 crowns."

And yet 1000 Crowns would be quite reasonable compared to 300 Gems. :unamused:

I have the Watcher, and I reject the idea that I should have passed it up to send a message to a company that doesn’t care, or to appease someone else’s sense of ethical superiority.

Zeni will continue making gamble boxes because that’s the best revenue stream for game studios right now. From a business perspective it would be financially irresponsible of them to not have the same offerings and “surprise mechanics” that keep their competitors solvent, and the board would toss the entire zeni leadership team out on their asses if they tried to claim some moral high ground that just doesn’t exist in aaa games right now.

But (and here’s the part people should be really upset about) most of my gems were from Twitch crates. This perk available only to PC players afforded me luxuries not available to console players without an outlay of cash, which isn’t cool.

Never going to be paying 300 gems for something like that. Only time I ever pay gems is when something is on discount, its the only time anything even approaches value for "money".

I agree with this guy/gal. Gambling crates are a cancer on the gaming community. And as the more people give into them...the further gaming companies will push this kind of crap. If they simply sold a product for a set price most people would be fine...but buying crates in order to get a "chance" to earn gems just to buy something that you'd be will to buy flat out is...is....insane and obviously a ploy to milk money from us gamers. In a few years it will get worse...trust me. The more people "spend their money how they want" the higher the prices will go and the worse the problem will get.

Would love to have it and would have bought it in the crown store for 1000 crowns in a heatbeat. No way I'm going to spend 10,000-15,000 crowns to get 300 gems for it.

60 dollars for a pixel pet is insanely greedy.
