Black dyes

relentlessyouthofficialneb18_ESO
Which of the black dyes is the darkest/looks the darkest on armor? I know of Legate black but thats locked behind more zerg running than I want to handle :D so what's the second best option?

Legate is the blackish black. Coldharbour is a very dark-brownish one thats pretty decent for many uses, and far easier to get (duh)

But yeah, we get you. I want that legate black too someday, buit... too much zergrunning for someone who sucks at the PvPness like me, so... it will take quite a great while.

And if they -ever- allow color unlocks through crowns... I would find myself sorely tempted to spend uite a bit on that.

Clodharbour black will give you the darkest in most of the equipment and costumes and i say most because some equipment and costume parts still give diferente looking tone anyways but it happens with all dyes. I wish ZOS would fix this.

Isn't Coldharbour black also a matte finish while Legate is shiny?

I haven't used black dyes in a while so maybe I'm misremembering.

Oddly enough coldharbour ash black is the darkest one even if it's a matte finish. Imo anyway. The legate black has a weird purple-ish tint to it or something. It just isn't entirely black.

You can compare legate black and coldharbour black on the PTS with a max level template if you wanna see for yourself.

All this being said, hopefully they release an easily accessable shiny, dark black dye someday.

Yeah, Ash Black mattes out on most surfaces, including metal. Can't remember, but I think Legate is always high gloss.

Coldharbour Ash Black is actually a little too dark. It looks awesome on older motifs that have bad textures but on the new ones I go with Thalmor Black to see the details that Coldharbour Ash Black makes invisible. Although your black levels might be different since I'm using Reshade.

I use coldharbour black on leather stuff like imperial breeches. So black, that it hides well the rough structure. They look like biker pants like that.

On cloth like wood elf medium tops it looks too dark, matte. I prefer lighter versions there, like the one grey of the 10 bottom materials or Thalmor black. The result is somewhat shiny, like dark silver.

There also is a nice shiny brown that works very well in combination with coldharbour black, actually the only brown I like, but I forgot the name, it is one of the rare colours (I think motif master brown). You still get a very dark costume as result, but not as totally matte like when you use coldharbour black alone.

as the former replies show: coldharbour ash black is the "real black". You get it finishing the main quest.

Only problem is, that a dye consists of more than just color. It also has impact on shininess. Coldharbour is matte (like a black shirt), not shiny (like the polished border of a TV).

If you are ok with an authentic black clothes look, this is the color for you, if you want a look like polished leather, you need worksarounds (brown/grey), as such a color actually does not exist in ESO as far as I know.

Don't let the name deceive you. This dye is similar to transliminal violet (this often times looks gold especially on shiny dye slots). However, in the case of voidstone violet it is very black, but with a bluish tint to it. Definitely second best imo, but might be best depending on your preference.

Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

Coldharbor ash black is really nice and dye's well on most material. Plate armors can have more of a greenish hue to it in certain light but overall its superb.

I feel ZOS put one of the only two actual black dyes behind main quest to get people to actually complete it, lol. Legate is nice but as we all know it will require a lot of time in PvP to acquire.

Don't overlook Tier 5 Materials (Ebony), and Noxophilic Black. Ebony does dye some things pitch black, very nicely. Noxophilic is a little light, but it's also a reliable black that doesn't darken things to the point where you lose all detail.
