My main is my crafter. He is a MagSorc and I still have unused skill points. No need to waste a character slot, and I’m not doing that grind again.

I would just make your main character your dedicated crafter. There are enough skill points - and it sounds like a major pain to have to log into a different character every time you want to craft something. Not to mention having to redo all that research and collect the same motifs over again sounds like a nightmare to me.

I assume we are talking about a master crafter. If you have an overabundance of gold so you can buy all of the nirnhoned gear necessary to research, sure.

My main is a master crafter. All of my alternates have researched everything but nirnhoned. It is convenient when I want to transmute something, but mostly I did it because it was really annoying to have my gear split into 2 columns in my inventory (I'm on PS4).

I thinking it's worth having a dedicated crafter. There's the convenience of not having to jump around characters as much. There's the simplicity and savings of having all your motifs and research unlocked in one spot. If you're interesting in getting into housing at all, many furnishing recipes have proficiency requirements from multiple crafts.

That's not to say you shouldn't level crafting on other characters. Do writs, research traits, and learn inexpensive motifs on them all if you're so inclined. There are certainly benefits to be gained from it, but I would absolutely put primary focus on maximizing a dedicated crafter.

Now for what I think is the most important point. Your crafter doesn't need to be your main (though if you have a main it may be easier), but be absolutely sure it's a class you enjoy. When I first started, I made the mistake of thinking, "If this is my crafter I won't be using it for combat much, let me make it this class that appeals to me the least." I could not have regretted that more. If you plan to get a character to the point where you have enough skillpoints to max your crafting skill lines and still have enough points in a passable build for whatever combat you may encounter, you'll be playing it a lot. Pick a character you love to play.

Yes, having a dedicated Crafter is a must have, but it should be your main. There's no reason not to craft on your main unless you don't sub eso plus and thus have limited bag space. There's more than enough skillpoints in the game to support many roles on one character.

You definitely should have crafting knowledge- motifs, recipes and traits on one toon - it’s very helpful having a Grand Master Crafter who knows how to make pretty much everything - and it’s too hard and expensive to do it more than once imo.

I have 6 toons who can do writs and are getting traits unlocked and the Grand Master crafter doesn’t actually do a whole lot better getting MWs - it’s quite surprising how little motif knowledge contributes to MW drop rates.

Mains change tho - I would think most players have retired a main or two - crafters never need to retire.

My former main became my crafter because I started my current main and, at the time, he was about a year behind on research plus there were a lot less skill points in the game.

This was in early 2015 before crafting writs and the explosion in motifs.

I’ve still got my first toon around with his own cool title because of crafting. I’m on him quite a lot and he’ll always be around while the servers are still up.

I have dedicated crafter that knows all craftable motifs, and has all crafting skills maxed. Since I don't care about achievement points it's no big deal. It would be nice to have this knowledge on my main, but I'm constantly changing my main due to the mighty ZOS nerf hammer.

Tho all 16 of my toons are maxed in all crafts only 2 of them have full triat knowledge of every craft and only 1 of them is 100% with style knowledge i find it useful in many ways that they are so
    1) master writs
    2) less time spent switching toons ( as i play the 2 higher one 85% of the time
    3) fashion for all and any new ones
    4) self sufficiency as well as i can help new players without time loss switching

As usual, polls need to have an 'other' option. In this instance because people change their mains, and what was at one time a main or non-main character crafter may not be that any more.

My ex-main is my dedicated crafter. She became my chief crafter after I ditched her as a main, and partially respecced.

Three of my other characters are, in turn, learning the crafting profession...and of these characters one is my current main, and the others have been a main at one point or another. The order of play may well change again multiple times.

Any unlearned motifs/recipes/blueprints etc automatically go to my dedicated crafter (who used to be my main and is now used for crafting and acquiring CP for underage alts). The others do their research in a pecking order from lv.1 gear made by the dedicated crafter, and decon stuff according to best use of level.

The dedicated crafter also acquires pick-up CP160 gear for the highest in the pecking order to decon.

They all do daily writs for the mats, decon-able gear and to provide my main source of income. Master writs get thrown away as too much hassle for too little return. Simply cba.

All my other alts do damn all (except one, whose sole function is to deal with the housing side of things), and will not enter any crafting program.

    Confused yet?

It all works extraordinarily well, considering.

Researching traits on multiple character isn't that hard. I have 12/18 who have 9 traits on everything. The cost is indeed pretty high per character, but I can absorb it just fine, being a fraction of what I make from crafting overall. The only expensive items are nirnhoned weapons, swift and triune jewelry, because of the trait stones involved. Overall it's ~250K per character at current EU-PC MM average. But considering you can sell most vouchers at ~300 gold (ex. an 150 voucher writ for 45K) and the research cost is spread over a year, that's nothing in the long run.

I craft a whole module, meaning weapons and/or a type of armor with the same trait, and transfer that trough the bank to the character that researches them. I have an addon that notifies me if an item has finished researching upon login. Then I simply unlock the next ones and put those for research. When one module is finished, I repeat the process for the next. The addon also shows me in real time which character has researched what, so I can prepare the next batch. https://www.esoui.com/downloads/info1058-TraitBuddy.html

I did it this way for a few reasons:

    1) He's an Imperial, so I didn't have to buy that motif. (I didn't want my main to be an Imperial.)

    2) It means I could put as many skill points as possible into crafts right from the begining instead of trying to balance it out or delaying crafting until I'd gotten enough points for that and combat skills.

    3) I don't have ESO+ so he holds all my woodworking, blacksmithing, clothier and jeweller materials. (Alchemy, enchanting, provisioning and style go in the bank and other stuff goes in a housing chest.) He also holds anything I want to sell on my guild store until there's space to list it and collects crafting surveys and master writs until I'm ready to do them. He usually has about 160/200 inventory spaces filled which would be a huge pain on a questing character but since he just stays in town crafting and selling stuff (and occasionally goes out to collect surveys) it's not a problem.

    4) It's often useful to have a character who is always in town to sort out my bank, sell stuff, move stuff to housing chests etc.or to go off chasing after guild traders if I want to buy something.

I think its worth it to have a dedicated crafter, and in my case, its my main. There's enough skills points to do it all.

    Reasons why:
    A. Conveience. Its a lot easier to be able to craft everything on one character, especially if you don't have addons to track your research progress

    B. Motif knowledge increases the chance of Master Writs dropping from max level crafting writs, and unless you want to duplicate motif knowledge, its much cheaper to do it on one character

YMMV, but those are why I have one main crafter. My other alts can craft max level writs, but they don't have the research or motif knowledge that my main does because I can't be bothered to duplicate that effort.

Same as this guy, no point typing the same thing, though so I will just quote.

I don't think it's worth to have a dedicated non-main crafter; my main character has the skill points to afford the passives in the crafting skill lines, plus, she's whom I gather achievements with, so learning motifs with her makes sense. If you have a dedicated crafter that's not your main character, it means double the effort of gathering skill points, levelling crafts, etc., plus, the crafting-associated achievements are collected there instead of your main character.

If you have it unlocked, and haven't started yet, pick an Imperial for your crafter. You'll save about 60k gold. (That number means less now than it used to, but still, you start with a gold rarity motif, instead of one of the blue rarity ones.)

Otherwise, yes, consolidating all of your crafting onto a single character is the way to go.
