Possible fix for "Unknown Error has Occurred"

"Unknown Error has Occurred" happens for most people as a result of dropped packets. ESO does a horrible job at smoothing out less than ideal network connections, and instead of making up for lost packets, simply drops the player with this error.

Many people have gotten around this error by hard-wiring their internet. Others by updating their network drivers and router firmware. Personally, I had to simply adjust some router settings and this error disappeared.

Overhaul every point that internet traffic flows from your computer to the WWW, and the majority of people will see this error disappear.

Not sure what you mean by "hard wiring their internet".

Packet loss happens along the entire route, not jut inside your 4 walls. Also, there are clearly server-side actions that help cause this if not all the time: one such is when a Hireling delivers mail, that always seems to stall he zone load and sometimes it fails.

While fiddling with your router may have helped you it is simply one on a large number of possible your assertion in your last sentence is, how shall I put it, optimistic.

    Ethernet = hard wiring.

My connection was dropping maybe 0.01% of packets, which I realized after running ping for 30 minutes. This, combined with the fact that a new network setup created the problem, led me to fix the network, and I have never seen this error again.

One friend was having the same problem, plugged his laptop in with an ethernet cable and it was gone.

Another friend was having the problem, I couldn't see an obvious fix so I just updated network drivers, and flashed the router firmware to DD-WRT, and the error disappeared.

So, with a 100% success rate thus far, I'd say optimism is called for. I have never heard of anyone experiencing this error regularly who hasn't had packet loss. If you're experiencing packet loss at a rate that causes this error from your internet provider, then its time to find a new provider.

As of 1.0.3 this Error message has been reworked. Not sure what it says now, yet.

I have been having this error since beta and I have always been hardwired. I have made sure everything with router/modem is updated.

Ping www.google.com for 30 minutes and see if you have any packet loss. If so, try different network configurations (a different router for example or plugging directly into the modem). If you still have packet loss, find a different internet provider.

It's a strange error, as its different from user to user and much depending on the equipment they use.

I have a new D-Link DIR-810L where this error occurre every 2-10 min or so.
But if I plug in my older D-Link router DIR-655 I get no error at all.

So it seems like there are some differnt way the two routers handle data.

Have you checked if there is new firmware available for the new router, or possibly an implementation of DD-WRT?

Getting this error or the new one which is exactly the same damn thing happens imo from the games poor use of network bandwidth, I am hardwired all the time and I have no packet loss, check pingtest.net for packet loss.

I can not even browse much then I get disconnected from this game and my connection even at half the speed it is now could play any other mmo out there.

So far I have found no work around, its purely how the game uses the bandwidth, as I mentioned on other threads also I believe its this megaserver and its causing more problems than what its worth.

Well it cant purely be a megaserver problem due to the fact that the majority of people will never get this error. And again, one network configuration I had, had zero packet loss, but changing the router solved the problem.

ESO's ability to deal with network configurations is poor, but at the end of the day you can fix it yourself.
