Why does it feel so dead right now?

I haven’t been playing as much since the last patch myself and wasn’t really interested in the IC event.

Steam charts suggests it feels dead because fewer people are playing (https://steamcharts.com/app/306130) Average steam players on line has dropped steadily from 17.8K in May to 13.1K in the last 30 days. As to why it's dropped... there's always a surge when a new chapter is coming out, and patches that nerf play-styles are rarely popular. That said, judging by steam at least, there are similar numbers playing compared to last year at this time and many more than in Aug. / Sept 2017.

Personally it feels dead to me because I liked my PvE pet-sorcs and my WWs, I liked tackling group content alone. Following update 23, I now like the ambience of cold space and exploring far-flung worlds in elite dangerous.

Cant rely on steamcharts on peak times the game still hits 23k players just from the players using steam
It's not counting the players that don't use steam which is quite alot to be honest. This game could really use some cross platform connecting PS4/XBOX/PC/MAC all together imo.
Think steamcharts give an good overview however.

Cyrodil would obviosly be dead because of IC, else it looks like autumn is an slow time for ESO.
WOW classic probably also had an impact.

Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Some people also treat this like a single player game. That they’re able to so highlights the issue of this game’s poor design as an MMO.

The storytelling can not be done cohesively since they start every character at the end of the timeline. A new player gets a terrible experience as far as the narrative is concerned. Modularized stories that have no relation to the rest of the game can have decent storytelling, but overall it is absolute dog crap in this game.

This is more of how you feel a MMO design should be. I'm a brand new player who tried out the free weekend, and enjoyed it, and like it so much that I got an ESO+ subscription. Why?

I played Daggerfall, Oblivion, and Skyrim back when those came out. They weren't my favorite games, but I enjoyed them quite a bit. Oblivion is still the only game I've ever completed 100% achievements on.

I never bothered with ESO when it was announced and released. I had played Everquest for 5 years of my life, and WoW for another 2-3. I was burnt out on MMOs. They all feel the same. Everyone racing to the endgame with a thread of "story" here and there. Little lore. Not all bad, but not really great either. I didn't expect ESO to be any different. Initial reviews seemed to confirm that. Everyone was wondering why they just didn't have it as a single player game with a bunch of people running around.

Fast forward to a few weeks back. I tried ESO because it was free. I was curious if they ever bothered making it single player. After a day it kind of blew me away. Two weeks later here I am logging on every single day playing it as another Elder Scrolls single player game with other people running around with me. This is exactly what I want out of a MMO. The amount of story and lore is crazy. Every NPC is voiced. How the hell?

You are not giving people enough credit about figuring out the storylines for the areas. It was confusing for maybe the first day because the entire game is so overwhelming, but it's wrong to say it's a terrible experience. We're smart enough to figure it out.

Shrug. Will my views change when I hit level 50 and I'm grinding out points and doing the harder dungeons? Maybe. But my expectation for this game was a solid single player experience with the option to jump in and do the guild raiding stuff on the side. It seems to offer just that. The PVP system also seems to have more thought put into it than other MMOs also.

The eternal balance complaints are all here from everyone else. It was the same with EQ and WoW, and any other MMO. People can be so invested in a game they will throw down their swords and put up ultimatums of quitting, or yelling about balance, or issues they have. It happens. Life goes on.

I agree that the (PC/NA) server feels quieter than usual. My friend and I were actually just talking about this last night. Usually post-flip you see a bunch of people running around checking out all the trader changes but even the biggest of cities felt emptier than usual.

a telling sign to me is that ZOS said performance will be worked on in 2020. Noticed that the news on UD 24 made it clear that they are working on performance issues in it (by their point of view, remains to be seen). Seems like they are nervous to me.

    Update 23.

I have about 1/2 the players online in 5 guilds and friends list since that dropped. The amount of frustration and hatred already spewing forth since Friday regarding Update 24 and the next round of nerfs makes me wonder if anyone I was playing with 3 months ago will be around 3 months from now.

I've noticed that Xbox NA population has defiantly declined, not only that but new items at guild traders are severely less. I'm guessing borderlands 3 and gears 5?

The other game about to drop is Archeage Unchained, in like a week and a half or so, so a lot of folks are in normal archeage figuring strategy for landrush.

PS4 EU is definately a lot more quiet. A lot of players afak.. I just log few times a week to collect daily reward and update mount.

Reasons for that.. servers are crap, the diffrence between classes is minimal, new meta and combat changes well crap to be honest... and there you pretty much have it.

Propaby some new players but they have lost a lot of gamers lately. Time will tell if they sort out this mess but at the moment no urge to login eso either.

PS: Read the patch notes. Simply speechless. Good luck with your product and you are going to need it. Hell Wrobel starting to look like the most sensible developer that has worked with this game... and that. has tons of irony on it.

Add in the multi-bidding shenanigans and the outright ignoring of feedback, continued massive issues with trading add-ons (add-on boogyman has now been used THREE times, its like a banhammer, but for traders) in general, horrendous performance issues, other games being released and hostility towards the place base.

LOL; anybody with an tail know that one will be the usual one.
Archeage has already flopped so hard because of infinite greed over infinite short time.
Give me any reason to trust them. Rest of the stuff is weak.but yes FF, ESOm WOW and GW2 looks better

WOW classic is the only game changer.

People keep mentioning WoW Classic is a gamechanger at the moment, but let me tell you something: not everyone who is playing Classic was actually planning to do so from the beginning. Personally, I had zero intention to try it, never mind leaving ESO entirely. However, I reached a point where the thought of having another mountain of drastic changes 3 months after the current ones, was too much. And that is the reason I am not playing ESO and I dropped ESO+ atm, while that is also the reason I tried Classic.

And before someone says something cliche like "this is an MMO" or "adapt or leave" or whatever: sure, I get that things in MMOs change as it's their nature and I accept it. What I have a colossal issue with is a) not making sense of the changes and b) too many changes happening too often. You want to change the way combat works in general/the power creep/the meta/whatever? Make your bloody changes all at once and save them for an expansion release. You have plenty of people that (try to) play this game casually, meaning we need longer to reach our targets, we don't have all the sets under the sun to mix and match and we have bars and rotations with more flavour and less efficiency/dps because we found a playstyle that is sufficient and we like. Changing so many things every 3 months simply means I might as well not bother because I won't achieve anything and things I like today might be completely different tomorrow.
