Steam charts suggests it feels dead because fewer people are playing (https://steamcharts.com/app/306130) Average steam players on line has dropped steadily from 17.8K in May to 13.1K in the last 30 days. As to why it's dropped... there's always a surge when a new chapter is coming out, and patches that nerf play-styles are rarely popular. That said, judging by steam at least, there are similar numbers playing compared to last year at this time and many more than in Aug. / Sept 2017.

Personally it feels dead to me because I liked my PvE pet-sorcs and my WWs, I liked tackling group content alone. Following update 23, I now like the ambience of cold space and exploring far-flung worlds in elite dangerous.

Personally, I've found my temporary poison in Diablo 3. I'm having a short term blast playing the Witch Doctor. Throwing exploding toads and fire bats at everything is hilarious :D

Cant rely on steamcharts on peak times the game still hits 23k players just from the players using steam
It's not counting the players that don't use steam which is quite alot to be honest. This game could really use some cross platform connecting PS4/XBOX/PC/MAC all together imo.

Good games out, while eso got stale with contents to play, and annoying technical issues in game, lag, crashes, annoying bugs. The player that’s left in game and still willing to queue for dungeons and trials are all new players and frustrating to play with. Annoying class balance and dot cooldown meta makes it boring to play.
I only log in to do writs and bg daily for the gold coffer then log out, until ZOS come up with something more fun and enjoyable.

I stopped playing eso a year ago on xbox for the simple fact that my trials team I had been with disbanded because we weren't beating VAS +2 in a matter of days and people got frustrated with it and I recently picked the game back up on ps4 and it seems almost impossible to find even pug groups wanting to do normal cloudrest or anything. And being a new player I need gear. Lots of my xbox friends quit to so hard when you are always by yourself

Sure; but, I bet it is fairly representative of what is happening overall. Offhand, I don't know of a better metric that is easily accessible.

Other games coming out, abysmal customer service, outright disgust toward the players, ignoring feedback (things like hey, don't release this, its not tested!) and then giving features hardly anyone wanted while not actually fixing things that need to be fixing. Lots of vets are out of the game.

Classic WoW <One of the probably most anticipated Re-releases for MMO's> + Zeni listening to player feedback of "Lets do a fix patch with less content" <People want this, but if they quit its almost impossible to bring them back w/o something to sink their teeth into and were getting a whopping story 2-4 hour DLC> + Zeni: "We will have our Vision<tm> done basically by END OF YEAR" = Players bailing.

I honestly have no idea on my DPS. Do I even bother with DoT meta Duel Wield? I recall a lot of players saying how the AoE nerf was super duper ok, but now they are shockingly enough back tracking AoE to Pre-Nerf <For which they changed abilities to work with new numbers, but I guess who cares now> and reduction of single target dots. With the upcoming CP revamp to "Class" redesigns <Could be amazing or utterly terrible, no inbetween>.

Yeah, you can probably see why Classic WOW is a better option. INB4 "Combat slow ITS BOUND TO FAIL!!!!" people that don't get it spam.

Because the changes to the game recently (from “balance passes” to performance deterioration to gambling crate exclusives) are overwhelmingly negative to the fun that’s supposed to be in a game.

All that paired with mediocre questing, lack of coherent storytelling since 1T that’s getting worse with every chapter release, and such overwhelmingly boring and simple overworld that players never feel any incentive to socialize or work together to overcome a challenge.

I canceled my sub because of performance and homogenization of classes, things just feel more bland and unstable oppose to what they use to be.

I agree with this. It's the truth. I don't use the broken, op skills of my templar, and I don't use the gutted and weakened skills, so my templar has no identity anymore.

And as for the game feeling dead, I honestly and sadly believe this game is on its way to die. It has so many extremely massive problems bogging it down now. I play this game almost every day, and I just don't see many people on at all. For a game of this type, it is very sparsely populated. More and more people are leaving, and even though Elsweyr has dropped and events are going on, it still feels very empty.

People are so used to there being few players on that they think seeing 10 people at a wayshrine means the game is super active. It just is so disappointing. This is a game with a lot of fun to be had, but it is damaged so badly by serious flaws and problems that are getting worse. I've seen so many people in my guilds etc talking about cancelling eso+ and leaving.

Performance has been better on PS4 the past several weeks. In Imperial City sewers getting the daily event tickets, doing the occasional trial on a weekend with guild mates, doing solo daily quests - I'm not getting disconnected, or having the game freeze on me. Either there are less people playing, or ZOS has fixed something.

Idk what game you guys are playing. We have a steady influx of new guild mates. Old guild mates still hanging strong. Sometimes people take breaks. For the most part those who play everyday are still playing and still showing newbies the ropes. Perhaps try going to different areas? Also take into consideration new games have come out.

Performance is my biggest issue. So while they fix it, I cancelled my sub until it's actually fixed.
I the meantime I play more single player games and trying to finish my sailboat in bdo. And maybe fool around in Archeage unchained when it releases. I want to be a pirate yaaar

Zos doesn't fix things unless it's crown store related.

5x450+ trade guilds, quieter than they usually are. Imperial city was busy during peak hours, we'll see how many of those players will be there now that event is done. Main cities and best crafting hubs are busy because many players just log in to craft and check their trades. On off hours you can go tens of minutes without seeing another player. Cyrodiil 30 days rarely locked, maybe weekend peak hours, most of the time 1 bar or 2.
    So business as usual.

some people enjoy the fact that they don't have to work together. I'm the kid who hated team projects. I didn't mind the story telling either, some very interesting tales in elsweyr. Don't get me wrong, I have my beefs with zos, but those two things I like.

Some people also treat this like a single player game. That they’re able to so highlights the issue of this game’s poor design as an MMO.

The storytelling can not be done cohesively since they start every character at the end of the timeline. A new player gets a terrible experience as far as the narrative is concerned. Modularized stories that have no relation to the rest of the game can have decent storytelling, but overall it is absolute dog crap in this game.

performance issues were massive. Meanwhile on xbox EU much better again, but during that time many left.

Apart from bugs, decisions that were a massive setback for many players.
Losing the option to play all their toons in the cyro main campaign (badly designed faction lock)
Losing the ability to run for 30 seconds, this affects especially magicka based toons (rapid manoever nerf you feel almost 90% of your playtime). This one might finally frustrate me so much one day, that I could switch to a different game.

Other issues are a combination of nerfs, but also of the inability of users to set up their characters.

I often read questions like "which set shall I use?". They get names of sets without any explanation, and thus do not understand how optimizing characters functions. Thus they are clueless when an ability is nerfed, and switch to easier games.

I use a setup not found at alcast or other "use this, use that sites", I used trial and error to test sets looking promising at the eso wiki. So luckily the sorcerer nerfs just had minor effect on me, I even feel stronger now in many situations. So the "nerfs" are an improvement in my case, except for a slight loss in AOE damage.

I think the late game crowd and guilds with those types of people have been hit pretty hard, although there seem to be plenty of new players around in dungeons and zone. I imagine if I my guild list was more new player oriented I wouldnt have noticed either, but my friends list has been pretty decimated too... and not by wow classic. Only one of my friends has gone over to that, most of them were just disgusted with the last patch and have either been playing less or not at all. Most have gone back to solo games like skyrim or just other random games.
