As to why it's dropped... there's always a surge when a new chapter is coming out, and patches that nerf play-styles are rarely popular. That said, judging by steam at least, there are similar numbers playing compared to last year at this time and many more than in Aug. / Sept 2017.
Personally it feels dead to me because I liked my PvE pet-sorcs and my WWs, I liked tackling group content alone. Following update 23, I now like the ambience of cold space and exploring far-flung worlds in elite dangerous.
Cant rely on steamcharts on peak times the game still hits 23k players just from the players using steam It's not counting the players that don't use steam which is quite alot to be honest...
Not sure what rock you're living under but IC has been insanely active with this event been ganking people left and right.
and not just IC guilds pretty active aswell.

I canceled my sub because of performance and homogenization of classes, things just feel more bland and unstable oppose to what they use to be.
Performance has been better on PS4 the past several weeks. In Imperial City sewers getting the daily event tickets, doing the occasional trial on a weekend with guild mates, doing solo daily quests - I'm not getting disconnected, or having the game freeze on me. Either there are less people playing, or ZOS has fixed something.

Because the changes to the game recently (from “balance passes” to performance deterioration to gambling crate exclusives) are overwhelmingly negative to the fun that’s supposed to be in a game.
All that paired with mediocre questing, lack of coherent storytelling since 1T that’s getting worse with every chapter release, and such overwhelmingly boring and simple overworld that players never feel any incentive to socialize or work together to overcome a challenge.

For the most part those who play everyday are still playing and still showing newbies the ropes. Perhaps try going to different areas? Also take into consideration new games have come out.

some people enjoy the fact that they don't have to work together. I'm the kid who hated team projects. I didn't mind the story telling either, some very interesting tales in elsweyr. Don't get me wrong, I have my beefs with zos, but those two things I like.
