Why do I allways get a "fake tank"?!

For some time already, every time I queue through Dungeon Finder I allways get a "fake tank". Well it has to be a "fake tank", as he is not using sword and shield and he barely ever blocks, right?
He is allways sprinting through the dungeon, herding most of the mobs to the boss, where he kills everything. Often times he is the last one standing as the rest of the team dies to red circles of stupidity - Even some max CP players. This happens even in veteran dungeons! The most bizzare thing is that sometimes he is doing more dps than the rest of his team!
And when someone asks him about his build, he just says: "heh thats my tanky PvP build".

As you can see not all "fake tanks" aren't able to tank a veteran dungeon. For that reason you should not hate whisper someone who queued as a tank but is using a two-hander and bow.

I wish my fake tanks were so capable. The ones I get can't even round up a single pull (let lone herd mobs all the way the boss) and simply go splat every time a boss uses a powerful move (that's on the rare occasion the boss is actually attacking him).
So it doesn't sound to me like you got a "fake tank" to me. Any character capable of taking on an entire herd of mobs plus the boss in a Veteran Dungeon sounds fairly "tanky" to me. Sounds more like you just landed into a dungeon with some decked out Vet who wanted to solo the dungeon asap and didn't have the courtesy to wait on others.10 -

Tank queues are faster than healers. That's why they do it.
Plus - DPS disguising themselves as tanks for faster queue times usually expect their healers to tank in my experience. So that's probably another reason.7 -
Lisutaris✭✭✭✭✭Well.... 2 days ago i queued as a tank and 3 dds (fake heal) rushed through everything....
After 15mins and dungeon finished... they told me something like "cool tank, nice to have you with us". They ignored me the whole dungeon (could not even try to do my job because of the rushing).
That's why tanking is not fun in pug

I usually get the guy who runs ahead without telling anyone, normally while there is the 4th group member still porting in, gets on the other side of a choke point, which makes the adds form a wall between us and him, which in turn forces the adds to turn on us once we attack or try to wade through the garbage, then whines that we were too slow and he was going for a no death speed run. Think Vet Wayrest Sewers 2.
Fake tanks are part of dungeon finder. Have to say I've been luckier than most with the pugs I've run with. Its got to the point that I look forward to running more DLC dungeons as there are less fake tanks there.2 -

No doubt. The typical fake tank scenario ends with half the group quitting in frustration as the fake tank usually travels with a partner so you can't kick him.8 -

It certainly seems like my healer winds up face tanking for them a lot.
Which is annoying, but its actually worse when the boss goes for a newbie DD who can't face tank, because then the fight takes at least twice as long.1 -

✭✭✭✭✭I queue almost exclusively as support roles for a few different reasons. One, all of my characters are built as role hybrids to some extent anyway. Two, that happened because I suck at being a damage dealer according to the internet and refuse to destroy my characters just to meet some internet nobody's numerical expectations. Three, I actually prefer doing support roles anyway and considering how much better the queue times are, it works just fine for me.
I don't run group content that often, though. I'm mostly a storyteller/roleplayer who focuses on questing, dailies, soloing world bosses (or helping others with world bosses) and stuff like that. I find 4-person dungeons fun sometimes so I do them occasionally, but it's not my standard reason for logging on to the game. All the whining about "fake tanks" makes me want to tank less rather than more. Most of my tanks are tank/dd hybrids. I think that's perfectly darned fine for normal base game dungeons - I taunt, I root, I slow, I do CC, occasional buffs - but I'm sure there's someone out there whining "fake tank" for that super easy normal base game dungeon. Hell, I'm sure there's someone out there whining "fake tank" for my character who is my serious tank and has done vet dungeons and some trials too. It's all just very discouraging. There's no pleasing some people and I thought I left that crap behind when I gave up being any sort of damage dealer.
The lesson here is that the next time you think of making a thread whining about "fake tanks" ... just don't. Just stop. It doesn't help anyone and it's kind of discouraging or disheartening. Instead create a thread voicing your appreciation for the tanks you've had that you like. Or maybe a thread about the challenges of learning how to tank. Just... something productive, you know?6 -

✭✭✭@Starlock It sounds like you are actually tanking. Fake tanks don't do any of the skills you listed: taunt, root, slow, CC, occasional buffs. They aggro the boss by attacking, rapidly lose aggro when the actual DPS jump in, then complain that everyone else isn't doing their part when the group wipes; i.e. "Heals need to be better," or, "DPS is too low."8 -

and honestly? not a fan of "tanks" like OP either. that whole sprinting through the dungeon thing means people don't get as much time to loot - if they get to loot at all, cause god help you you slow down even for a moment, he's going to lock you out of a boss, god help you if you may want to do the quest, etc
I've gotten a tank like OP and it was the WORST pug I've had and I'm counting pugs where we weren't even able to finish the dungeon in that estimation.dirty worthless casual.

✭The only reliable way to get a real tank is to take one with you (even if it is yourself).
Most real tanks don't pug for long. It's way easier and more fun to tank for players you know can perform their role.
Some guys enjoy the opportunity to teach, but a lot of people you meet in a pug are unteachable.3 -

✭✭✭✭✭I think most that understand ESO design knows a S&B has never been a requirement for a tank. The minimum requirement is a taunt plain and simple. Also, only inexperienced tanks will hold block full time.2 -

in wayrest 1 run up to slimecrawl or at least to the door and burn all the rats.
Note that this require an plan all agree on and that you know the group is capable of it.Grinding just make you go in circles.

✭Plenty of similarly tanky pvp 2 handed bow fake tanks get kicked not because they can't survive large pulls and bosses, instead, it's because they don't make known their intention to run through mobs in pugs, and unsuspecting pugs will start attacking the mobs in the tank's wake and they in turn switch aggro and kill them.
That in my eyes is a failure as a tank, not being able to control what the tank aggroes/engages and causing others in the group to die. They think they're good as long as they can survive, while letting the rest die. I guess selfish fake tanks can still be proud enough to brag about letting unsuspecting pugs die.7 -
IlCanis_LupuslI✭✭✭✭✭Healers view= I expect the tank to not jump around keep taunt of the boss and big adds at all times so I can stack my heals on him and feed him orbs every 10 seconds.
I expect the dps to not jump around like headless chickens so I can keep them healed and them to grab the orbs the tank gets . You don't have to avoid all red fields just the 1 shot ones anything else I can heal you through just concentrate on doing damage.
And to the magsorcs amongst you guys=
Stop slotting the healing matriarch (often lovingly referred to as "flappy t**s") let me worry about the groups hp bars and you worry about the bosses hp bar OK? If you need a emergency self heal so badly use one you don't have to double bar. And if you need orbs and don't have a mike just use the "my magica/stamina is low" emoji and I'll send 1 in your general direction no big deal just let me know.
Tank view= If I taunt all dangerous adds and the boss making sure nothing to dangerous comes your way I do expect a orb every now and then and a few hots so I can spend my magica in chaining in adds and rooting them instead of blowing it all to heal myself. I also expect that if I'm keeping the boss as Stationary as possible for the dpses to do some decent damage. Learning a proper rotation and getting proper gear isn't that hard guys.oh yeah to the Stam dpses amongst you guys : stop charging ahead I'm not wasting my stamina chasing a overconfident dps and the listening to the bickering about not taunting afterwords. And to the cyromancers amongst you guys : your quite unique playstyle is not appreciated in dungeons, please leave your ice staves at home Thank you

First I'm not build to take high amounts of damage so please tanks keep the dangerous adds away from me and healers: if you send through orbs every 10 seconds and keep my healed I can guarantee the boss will die quickly. If I'm spending all my stam dodging big hits from dangerous adds or spamming shields ( for example stone warriors in Vmalatar) and healing myself if the heals are s*** don't expect my to be able to sustain a full dps rotation after that.
I've been doing alot of DLC dungeons lately often with pugs mostly thou with a set team where everyone does his job well.
Everyone has a job in dungeons do it and let the other guy worry about his role.
Basic rule of thumb= normal dungeon if 1 guy does his job run= smooth
Vet dungeon = if 2 people do their job = smooth run
Vet Hm= 3 people do their job= smooth run
DLC vet hm= everyone needs to do their job if 1 guy is napping the whole team wipes in most cases.
Not 100% serious but u guys get the point. Each person's performance directly affects the others performance. It can be compensated to a certain degree but it makes everyone's job alot harder. So make sure you do your role. There r alot of guides out there... There is no excuse.

Harrdarrzarr✭✭✭I only use the dungeon finder on my dd's for places I can solo, because I learned that you can't always depend on the people you randomly get in your group. Players need to learn that they will sometimes have to adjust their build a bit (selfheal/taunt and just facetank the boss while doing damage) otherwise you will have a *** experience.0

✭Cause this is the thing nowadays. All the cool kids are doing it. If you're not doing it, you're not one of us. Ha ha. Ehh, more nuisance than anything. What annoys me more are those that come into dungeons and trial (non-teaching/learning run) and not knowing its mechanics. I don't have a mic and try my earnest to explain mechanics, but if they don't listen or engage the boss while I'm trying to type, then, I'm out. Also, those that just blaze through all the adds to get the boss, then, all the adds catch up and compile on the boss. I guess on normal, you just deal with it, but, on vet-DLC dungeons; forget about it. Sometimes, you just don't know what the *beep* is wrong with people. No different from in-game ESO and in real life.
Likewise, a dd queued in as a tank and not knowing mechanic. Same with a dd queuing in as a healer. In non-vet or dlc normal dungeons (particularly currently with White Gold Tower or Imperial City Prison), you kind of deal with it, because you just want to burn through and finish to get the event tickets (after a long queue.)0 -
Fiewiel✭✭✭Thats the way of the pug. Sometimes you end in parties which are bad and sometimes which are just awesome. In the end its your decision if you want to stay and try your best so that the party succeeds.
I play a healer and very seldom I quit after the first boss (thats my benchmark fight) and take the penalty wait. In the end I play ESO for fun and not for mega-optimization (not in the dungeon finder at least), so 30 minutes and having fun is better for me than 10 min successfully annihilation. Nonetheless I have limits.
