Shatter Soul ultimate viability

Shatter soul has always been a bit of a niche ultimate but I have enjoyed using it due to the viscerally satisfying explosion animation when you successfully secure a kill with it. I've made posts advocating for the explosion to always happen regardless of if you kill the target with the abilitily, and after years of waiting this is now the case! In addition, you can now even intentionally cancel the ability early to leverage the AOE damage from the explosion. Awesomesauce. However it seems the ultimate can never catch a break, as it was nerfed into Oblivion in the same patch note. With a new duration of 5 seconds the damage per second has been diluted to "reduce the bursty nature" of a non-burst, channeled ultimate. This leaves the ultimate in a situation where it does less DPS than a LA/spammable rotation. In PVE losing LA damage already makes the ultimate unusable, and in PVP the application is limited to trying to execute medium armor builds with curse/fury/shatter soul combos (which often fail due to LoS anyway). I still might have used shatter soul with the 5 second channel change but the final nail in the coffin was the 75 ultimate cost increase. Assuming sorcerer 15% reduction, at 100/85 ultimate points, shatter soul could be used reactively to execute low health enemies, secure kills on escaping nightblades, assist allies by calling focus to a target, etc and although less effective than atro/DBoS/destro/meteor it could be used much more frequently. Now, at 175/149 ultimate, unless there is a mediocre cloak-spamming stamblade you have a personal vendetta against, there is no reason to run this ultimate over other options, and that just sucks.

    Learn to play something other than a roll dodge build. You might want to try blocking or using LOS. Only bad players died to current soul assault. The nerf is completely unnecessary and only caters to forum whiners like yourself.

    Yeah this ult is already pretty bad on live. The only reason I occasionally slot it is to delete those pesky medium rollerblades.

    Also the increase to 170 ultimate from 100... Who comes up with these changes, instead of fixing bugs someone at ZOS is busy with crappifying ultimates into oblivion... Except for the Bone Collossus Ultimate of course, Pay to Win... :-/

    Who is going to use an ULTIMATE, which is:
    - Can be cancelled with LoS within 1 sec of casting (Poof 170 ultimate...)
    - Is only single target
    - Does the same DPS as spamming a spammable, someone check if Jesus Beam skill outdamages this Ultimate?
    - During casting makes you slow as crap (now even for 5 seconds!! YAY!!)
    - Costs an absurd amount of ultimate

    Seriously though, I used shatter soul because it was fun and super satisfying the rare times the explosion went off. I was fully aware I was intentionally playing with a disadvantage. Those that complain about it on the forums die even faster to DBoS combos so not sure what the hate is about. Competent players only die to shatter soul when caught off guard, or are pressured by another player. I'm just upset a tool that was once fun and at least useable is now an effectively dead ultimate.

    I think the problem us that, when activated against anyone, it leaves the opponent in a complete state of defense unlike other ulti were you can run away from or block easyily. Soul assault/shatter give you 3 choices. 1-drop your gaurd/block and go for line of sight hoping you don't die med way. 2- block/spam shields and healing, exhsuating your resources, hoy you don t get stunned afterward. 3- if you are bulky enough, it's a great opportunity to kill whom ever using the ultimate as they are droping they shield, heals, blocks, buff, and debuffs as well. Unlike meteor, incap, leap dbos... you can not wait for the person to use the ulti then block the first tick/hit, you have to block all ticks, big toll on stamina.

    Since they nerfed it hard, it should get vuffed a bit, making anyone hit by the ulti can't go invisiable for the duraton instead of 2 secs and the ulti is 5 secs.

    Soulassault was a pure Xv1 ability and rightfully adjusted.

    Sadly these adjustments are also outright terrible and leave the ability in a state where it´s not ever going to be slotted.

    If something is problematic on a mechanical level (undodgeable high dmg channel) it should see rework instead of number tweaking as hardcounters are generally in one of two states:
    1. they do work and then op bc as the name implies - a hardcounter
    2. they no longer hardcounter sth and become useless.

    This ultimate was not bursty in the first place to be spread out over a longer duration - very weird.

    This would only be warranted assuming they're going to remove cancelling/weaving all together by adding delays (which would be a good thing). Then I could see this being "bursty". It was only bursty if you were a complete greenhorn that compared it's damage to pressing skills and not weaving.

    The cast time is terrible, the cost is terrible and the damage is terrible. There is no use case for this Ult on PTS, and not really a good use case for it currently on live.

    Yup, unless it is reworked or the cost increase is reverted my mag sorc is going back to DBoS, (even with the shiny new cast time. -_-) Gotta love using the same offensive ultimate on over half my characters.

    No.

    5 seconds, of no healing, weaving, cancelling, blocking or dodging.
    In the current game state, it needs to be doing 30% of the target max hp per second to be viable - lol. As in, nothing is offensively seriously viable that basically has you channel it for 5 seconds unless it's guaranteeing a kill.

    Not viable at all... only application is block cancelling soul shatter for the first dot tic and explosion in burst... but the damage isn’t really worth the ult cost so... no

    Exactly... a 175 ultimate-cancel for a single burst equal to a bit of damage? Give me a break. Literally.. Light-Attack-Weave-Direct Damage will be more damage. Especially if you're running charged, or infused weapons.

    both channel ultis ought to be at most 110 ulti, soul strike and the bow ulti, rapid fire/toxic barrage. ballitsa ought to stay at 175, cause you can do other thing while that is going off.

    Soul assault is direct hard counter to any medium armor in open field and when that medium armor user is outnumbered. Obviously ZOS removes all hard counters from game, so this is good and logical change. This ultimate was stupidly OP, it's not about dps, it's about fact that it can't be dodged and unlike templar rays does huge damage out of execution zone and also grants full cc immunity and can't be interrupted. For 100 ultimate cost lol. Simply lol that it survived for so long without re-balance.

    You are obviously biased. As you correctly said, it was not overall good ultimate in case of fighting inside keep, towers or even BGs where LOS defense is available within one roll-dodge. And it was not good against players with S&B, tanky players and so on. Only purpose of this ult is to wreck medium armor squishy builds, same as shield-breaker existed to hard counter/hunt only one class.
    ZOS destroyed majority of hard counters in Elsweyr patch, but somehow forget about soul assault and couple of others. Why? Probably they wanted to sell Elsweyr first to largest part of population.

    Yeah I disagree. With the new dot pressure on top of channeling this ult, I can see it being pretty decent.

    Soul Shatter should be remade into something like a magicka Onslaught tbh.
