I wasn't aware anybody actually left that thing on..

I leave it on, and Zone Chat off. Zone English is usually fine and provides all I need by way of public chat (none, apart from the odd question and answer), so any question of altering the default filter setting has never arisen.

Yeah you can just turn it off, but it also, apparently, impacts your ability to name things. Like my argonian guild 'Sweet Water' was forced to have a - in the middle of it, and in chat it comes up as 'Swee****er'. Which imo is both ridiculous and also sounds more like profanity than the original words. Or at least if someone called me a Sweeer I'd assume it was an insult.

I just think the profanity filter should replace every occurrence of forbidden words with "abavarlor" instead of using little stars.
    My characters:
Main and crafter: A Breton magicka templar named Erwann Sorril
Alt 1: A Bosmer sorcerer named Tuuneleg
Alt 2: An Imperial dragonknight named Gaius Tullius Hastifer
    Alt 3: An Argonian vampire/nightblade named Observe-le-Xanmeer
Alt 4: A Nord werewolf/dragonknight named Sigurd Hurlevent
Alt 5: A Breton sorcerer named Gilian Sorril (he's Erwann's younger brother)
    Alt 6: A Khajiit nightblade named Jolan-dar
Alt 7: A Nord warden named Sigurmar Hurlevent (he's Sigurd's younger brother)
Alt 8: An Altmer templar named Oioriel
Alt 9: An Argonian stamina Warden named Danse-avec-les-Rainettes
Alt 10: A Redguard templar named Neemokh af-Corelanya
Alt 11: A Nord stamina sorcerer named Olga Écoute-Vent
Alt 12: A Breton magicka Warden named Ian Sorril
Alt 13: A Dunmer magicka necromancer named Ilmoran Dren
Alt 14: An Orc stamina necromancer named Norgol gro-Borziel
Alt 15: A Nord magicka necromancer named Thorgen Givresang
Alt 16: An Imperial magicka dragonknight named Publius Valeirus Hastifer (Just call him "Valerio" - he's Gaius younger troublemaker of a brother)
Main in NA (For collaborative events): A Breton magicka nightblade named Titouan Sorril (long-lost brother of Erwann and Gilian)

I'm bad at remembering to turn the profanity filter off until I type something like 'put on' and it gets censored. I'm actually tempted to turn it back on to expand my vocabulary in random languages.

The filter being oversensitive actually taught me a lot more lewd/bad words in English than I knew before. It's kind of doing the opposite of what it's supposed to.
This Bosmer was tortured to death. There is nothing left to be done.

yes, that gets censored. yes, there is a space between "pen" and "is"

Yep, that was the first one I came across, and I promptly went and turned the thing off. It's now on the list of stupid settings I have to change each time I roll a new toon (because, you know, a "turn on/off account-wide settings" option would be too complicated).

(It assumes you're trying to say that euphemism for a woman's more intimate area that both begins and ends with a 't' and just throwing in spaces or dashes to confuse it. The end result is a very different kind of confusion, of course.)

What I don’t understand is why people have the profanity filter on in the first place? If someone is spouting profanity just put them on the ignore list!

"woman's more intimate area" is an euphemism; the word behind asterisks is not. Euphemism is a word or expression constructed purposely to bypass a filter (human or machine). For example "alternative facts" is an euphemism for "lies".

Fair enough, I should have used "term" rather than "euphemism." I was just trying not to get censored by the forum software. :D
