Can anyone tell me why I have to leave the Harborage to get the next quest in the main quest chain? Why not just have it show up while I am already there?

Cause the Prophet is a jerk and love to have you endure at least two loading screens between each mission:

Prophet: Go now, Vestige, I need to rest
    *Vestige leaves the Harborage
Prophet: Come at once, Vestige, we must talk

In the end this attitude sealed his destiny in all my playthroughs

The other thing about the Prophet, he let's you fast travel to the Harborage, but once done with you, you get to do the Walk of Shame all on your own to get back
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Yes, I did choose him to die in the final step. Not sure it had any game impact though. I am guessing you would still have the Elsewyr chain if you made a different choice and chose the Imperial (Sai?) instead.

The main quest line used to be tied to your character level and you couldn't advance to the next stage until you gained 5 more levels.

Ever since 1T, the dialog makes no more sense ...

I knew I forgot the name. What would happen if he was the one that didn't make it in the main quest line? Does the game note that at all in the Elseweyr lead in?

It could be changed to trigger when you walk 1 foot away from him at least; or outside the Harborage if that was too hard. Instead it waits until you go around the corner. Just move the trigger closer!

Though tweaking the previous turn in to allow continuation like almost all other quests would be better.

I really wish they would change things there... back to the level-locked thing, or maybe at least some external events, like... "memories" after the starter isles, "lyris" after the first major questline of the first map (Balroth/Mathieson/Wyrd Tree), "agent" at the end of the first map, "abner" when reaching the capital in the second map, "Information" at the end of the second map, "sai" in the middle of the third map, "valley" in the middle of the fourth map, "amulet" in the middle of the fifth map, "companions" in the middle of coldharbour and "bossfight" after the coldharbour questline.
It would make way more sense that way, really.

Your idea falls down due to Unlimited, your ability to level anywhere and not follow faction stories would mean you could likely never trigger certain points.

I makes perfect sense as it now stands as I see it, Unlimited is still a problem since the Profit only appears to you in your faction's city/Harborage which means if you don't go back there for a long time your MQ stalls and unless you know about how the MQ worked pre-Unlimited you'd likely have no idea why.

Also, Elswyr has a critical flaw in that Tharn gives you the intro quest but if that's active he never sends his Banekin to see you .. mind you, The Ultimate Weapon quest also blocks that. :(

Totally agreed. It's a shame, that main questline comes to such a state, and with each chapter it becomes less and less adequate from the narrative point of view. Also, as a player I think that throwing all possible quests into my face right from the start is a very unpleasant experience. I'd love to see more consistent and logical story instead of such "fractured, but whole" approach.

Mages and Fighters have to be at level 5 to get the final quest and be sent off to Coldharbour.

Prophet will let you just grind out his schtick up to that point.

Not checked (yet) what happens if you just go to Coldharbour and do all the quests first (without speaking to Prophet/Mages/Fighters).

If that is possible, it would be why the Prophet still is outside the last bit with Meridia.

And, yeah, story is a big hot mess xD

The Prophet is an enormous tease who wants to tire the Vestige out by making him run out and back in again so that he can eventually have his wicked way. It's a scandal. Just be sure to never turn your back on him, and NEVER pick up the soap if you happen to be in the shower with the Prophet and he "drops" it.

(I think this game has damaged me. I'm sorry).

Yes or simply to next login on character. The fighter and mage guild is still spaced out. TG and DB require you to level guild skill line.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

AND to get to the next guildhall, which prevents those from becoming a rush! Mainstory... well, it would have been nice to do it like that too. Have the prophet appear not anywhere, but... only in selected locations you go to for the map story anyhow.

Would make it feel a LOT more smoothly...

The prophet tells you the reason actually. He's very weary from all the commotion and needs to rest. Additionally he needs to think and receive more visions. Thatr's why you need to leave him in peace, when he's ready he will magically contact you through hologram just like Princess Leia in Star Wars, except for obvious reason R2D2 can't be show in ESO (being a modern robot with electronics and such. Hmm, they could have made a dwemer construct though, couldnt they?).

Anyway, incidentally the prophet is ready for just as you reach the steps outside the Daggerfall south gate.

Personally I'd rather they reverted to the old method of tying it to levels, that would help towards fixing the problem some report of not having any sense of progression these days.

The only problem with a level lock. What if I wait until after level 50 to go start that quest chain? (Like I'm going to do on my main) You could make it class level, or CP levels.

I like your suggestions that you outlined above.

Time passes at a different rate inside the Harborage, by the time you've walked out of the Harborage and made it to the edge of town, days have passed for the Prophet. ;) (Why do you think he looks so old for 45?)

Having done this recently, you can go to coldharbor, do the entire main zone quest there including the siege of molag bal’s citadel thing, ending the planemeld, getting exploded + seeing a few allies (who insist they’ve seen all your heroic deeds despite never setting foot in the base game) “die”, yet still haven’t even gone to rescue the prophet from his confinement.

    The narrative sucks major balls
