Varen, because I felt he needed to repent for his sins. I mean, in trusting Mannimarco, he essentially helped start the Soulburst. And trying to proclaim himself as Dragonborn.

Varen. Not because he "deserved" it, as others put it, but because he had the right to clean up his own mess.

Sai Sahan is generally my second choice. He sought to give his life meaning, which is a worthy goal.

I almost never choose Lyris, because she doesn't seem to understand the nature of the sacrifice. Abnur Tharn is very explicit that there is no afterlife for whoever is sacrificed, yet Lyris claims that this is her chance to go to Sovngarde. Um, Lyris? Are you paying attention?

Of course, you see the Prophet's projection in Orsinium even if you did sacrifice him, so... Moth priest shenanigans? Maybe he recorded the projection in advance after reading an elder scroll, to be delivered at the appropriate time.

I did in every one of them in the course of my altings, but... most times it was the former emperor.

I mean... HE started the whole mess, its only fitting that he finish it, right? Also, he has less of a future left then the other two, so...

Varen is the Yoda of the group, and you don't go sacrificing your Yoda man.
    Wrong.
Its a sad fact that the yoda man -always- has to be the sacrifice at the end of the story. Gandalf (though he came back in white). Qui-gon Jinn (though he came back as force voice). Ben Kenobi (though he came back as force ghost). Spock (though he came back through genesis effect). Dumbledore (though he came back as painting and in near-death experience). Kosh Naranek (though he came back as a mind fragment). Professor X (who came back through vasious means in various stories). Luke Skywalker (who probably will also come back as force ghost someday if the story needs it) And now... Varen Aquilarios (and whatta you know, he ALSO came back as ghost at the end of the orsinium mainstory!)
Its a -classic- "coming of age" type cliché, showing how the wise mentor from the older generation sacrifices what is left of their life so the next generation of heroes can finish the job. Often with a side dish of "making up for my mistakes". And often with a coming back, at least in flashback memories, to drop at least one more crypric wisdom... ;)

Lyris on my main, because I’d already sacrificed the other two on my then-mains and I wanted her axe.

If I could go back I’d pick Varen. Especially since he’s dead presumably once Orsinium is done.

Just seemed right to me. It completed his character arc, gave resolution to his journey of redemption, and showed how great his character was by his sacrifice for his other companions. Sai Sahan and femshep on the other hand are a cute couple, and their story arcs had just given them something to live for. I think the old man would be proud to call those two his successors.

SPOILER ALERT for ORCLAND, do not read if you do not want the ending sorta spoiled.

Okay, now to the the question. So if you choose another option, Varen will still show up as a force spirit thing at the end? On my main, I choose Varen and had him appear. If I read your statement correctly, does this mean that it is Varen who shows up regardless?

To answer the OP question, I killed Varen on my main playthrough and almost every other playthrough. On an RP playthrough, I had one choose Lyris after she choose the beard over him. I do not believe that I have ever choosen Sahan. As a white dude IRL, I am pretty sure that if I choose him that some political group would find this out and bring it up the night before I run for President or something. :D

So, my Necromancer is making progress, Level 50, and with the end of the original main Story one step closer to Elsweyr, but as the original Storyline ended, I was wondering, which one of the three companions did you choose as your sacrifice in your first (or whatever was your more invested) playthrough? And what made you decide this way?

For me I sacrificed Varen, I mean, this whole mess was kinda his fault to begin with, he was old and the elder Scrolls blinded him...

Plus, I really couldnt tear Lyris and Sai Sahan appart again... they just started to accept their feeling for each other :(

    So... how about you guys?

EDIT: In the Poll, I accidently wrote Abnur Tharn instead of Sai Sahan, but I cant change it any more... I was never good with Names xD

You do not want to make a spoiler but you put in the title that in the Main Story you have to sacrifice someone...
