The gold you would have bought was still farmed from the game itself, it didn't come out of thin air. And some of that gold you would have bought, then spent on items from a guild trader, would go to said guilds, then sinked out of the game by bidding on multiple traders every week.
That's you know...kind of how money sinks work.
