Help! No Idea Which Class is Best for ME

So I've been playing around with the game casually since the 5 day head start. Played all the different classes at least once, counting the beta weekends, yet I still have no idea which class to choose. I have a vague idea of what I'd like to do, but no idea which class best suits it. The skill lines Guilds, Alliance War, Weapons, and Vampire/Werewolf also further complicate things.

The following is what I'm looking to do and keep in mind my armor/weapon choices is purely aesthetic and I won't change that. I have to be able to look at my character.

Race: Breton or Imperial (aesthetic reasons)
Armor: All Heavy or 5 Heavy with 2 cloth or 2 medium
Weapon: Great Sword, Duel Wield Swords, or Sword and Shield

Hopefully this will narrow things down for you all to help find the right class for me so I can quit rerolling. With that out of the way, this is what I'm wanting my character to accomplish:

- A gap closer since I want to be melee and need to keep them in melee range
- Some kind of snare/root/stun to keep them within melee range when they try to flee
- At least 1 straight damage or DoT ability
- Some healing sustain for survivability either through a direct heal or life-stealing.

The above are actions I feel every character needs in order to deal with most situations. I do understand that multiple classes and weapons can accomplish this, but the choices are so numerous and I don't have a lot of beta experience to draw upon. If I test each class out, I'll be burnt out on the game by the time I figure something out, because I can't stand repeating the same solo content over and over again. So if anyone could help me out here, I'd be deeply greatful.

** If you all think it really all comes down to which character theme I would prefer the following are my favorite classes in past games:

- Thane in DAoC
- Jedi and MFencer/CM in SWG
- Death Knight in multiple MMO's
- Paladins in Multiple MMO's
- Jedi and Sith in SWOTR
- ...and yes I know I'm a nerd!

I'm also having trouble choosing a faction. All 3 factions have their appeals and drawbacks. =-(

I'd recommend Nightblade or Dragon Knight.

    That's interesting. So how come?

Because the Dragon Knight and Nightblade have the things you are looking for. Ways to close gaps and keep enemies stunned/snared. :)

Oh, and NB has heals. Actually, a 2h Templar might be your speed, as well, with a sword n board or dual wield at level 15 when you get second skill line hotbar switch ability. With a Templar, youll have your heals, and quickly gain a morph of the second fire based skill in the skill line that has the fireball (name suddenly escapes me).Bretons do well with Templar, btw. In addition, that morph I just mentioned is turning a slow-fireball in to a burst of flames around you. You also have a heal with dual wield. It's the first or second skill you unlock in the dual wield skill line. When morphed, I THINK it's called blood craze. It heals for some of the damage during the bleed you inflict on the enemy. Furthermore, as a Templar with 2H, you get the charge ability to charge at your enemies.

NB is more of a stealthy class, but very much melee friendly. Although, many of the NB skills give you magic weapons for an attack, but it's up to you to decide if you use those anyways. Have you tried looking up the skills and morphs of each class on the interwebz? It's very helpful. If you don't mind using magic-based skills, the dragonknight has a skill in the Earth-based skill line that has you hurling a rock at enemies that knocks them down. The morph gives you a hideous, but effective, earth "shell" armor for a few seconds. A 2H skill (the first one you get, I believe), can be morphed to give you a shield around you upon contact with enemy. You have the fire-grip spell in the flame-whatever skill line of the DragonKnight, so you can pull enemies to you. No matter your class, the 2H skill line works well because you have a charge, a bleed, and the uppercut skill which sends and enemy to his arse when used. Using uppercut (which is with weapon, not fist) and then using charge the enemy skill works very well. Plus, you can knock em down again with your stone-throw skill.

DragonKnight 1handed and shield would probably be best for what you are looking for.

    - A gap closer since I want to be melee and need to keep them in melee range
The DragonKnight has the Fiery grip, which can pull enemies toward you, And the one hander and shield has a charge ability which knocks them down for 2 sec and closes the gap

    - Some kind of snare/root/stun to keep them within melee range when they try to flee
The one Hander/Shield has a snare ability, and the DragonKnight has dark talons to root them in place and does a good amount of damage.

    - At least 1 straight damage or DoT ability
The dark Talons is an aoe as well as a root, and DragonKnights have Fiery breath which deals damage and ignites them for more damage over time

    - Some healing sustain for survivability either through a direct heal or life-stealing.
Dragonknights have a great healing ability called dragon blood, which heals for 30% of missing health and gives you 40% health regen for 20 sec.

just my suggestion, and this is the build i went with and works great.

edit: And a bow would also be great for your secondary weapon if you go with this build.

    Join Daggerfall ;)

Myrmidons, my brothers of the sword. I'd rather fight beside you than any army of thousands. Let no man forget how menacing we are, we are lions! Do you know what's there, waiting, beyond that beach? Immortality!Take it, it's yours!

Great comments so far guys. I thought about Siphoning Nightblade but haven't tried it yet. It'd be hilarious to teleport around the battlefield, stunning key targets for me team to take down aswell.
