Hey guys,

I used to play ESO on launch for well over a year but eventually gave it up. Im returning but on a new platform so its a completely new start with no CP. I was wondering where the races and classes stand for both PvP & PvE. I know theres probably not a one best character but I would like to hear what to avoid building in the current meta aswell as what I should consider. I used to play both a magicka breton templar, imperial stamplar and a stamina DK. Thanks!

breton magicka templar has gotten a big boost... i do have one of those imperial stamplars its ok but not best combo, argonian dk is still awesome as tank but not quite as dd... i think orc is now the best option with redguard, like breton for magicka, the bit less damage bit better sustain option

Its a little hard for me to feel good about giving class advice when we know that ZOS is making major adjustments to streamline many class skills with Elsweyr, as previewed here: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/466792/update-22-combat-direction/p1

So if you really want detailed advice for top-tier content or really competitive PVP, I'd hold off until the PTS testers get to start playing around with PTS builds here shortly.

But truthfully, I'm of the opinion that the best character is the one you like to play. Breton Magicka Templar is in a good spot right now thanks to the Breton racial passives giving them great sustain. Imperial got some good buffs for general play.

Orc is best for everything in stamina dps department, nord best tank, breton best in magicka. From class side it's hard to say which one will come on top after all the changes expected in nearest month, but templar looks like most solid now for anything other then tanking. NBs are top dps now but they are expected to be heavily nerfed.

If you go templar/ go argonian/ trust me.resource menagment is the best you can get + you are almost immune to healing reduce effects + you have good stats+ healing done increase.
my advice is to spend day or 2 to read all the changes/races/sets/peatches/ before you start new character.
or you will rerol for sure. its up to you. be sure info you read is up to date

Thanks for the responses so quickly guys thats kind of insane, seems like a good community! I didnt even know theres a new patch coming out that info is appreciated! (Super noob right now) I know i should wait and make sure im certain on my choice but im too eager too jump in.

I always gravitate towards tank/support builds which i enjoy in PvE but would love to have the versatility to switch out gear so that Im still useful in PvP in terms of Dps. So that in mind would a DK still be the superior tank in your own opinions and if so nord/argonian/orc or redguard?

DK is great as a main tank for now, but all classes can tank. Warden for now is a good support/off tank. Templar is also popular as a taunt-and-blocker in a tin can. ZOS are in the middle of a big class rebalance/realignment right now and each year there are adjustments, so classes will perpetually shift in terms of perception as "best for..."

But really, if you're starting fresh, you've got plenty of character slots to experiment with and for the next few weeks you can get constant double xp. So jump in! :) Take all classes to 15, then pick one or two you really like to take to 50. Watch some videos and streams on tanking/support to get idea of what you want.

Any character at 50 can then earn Champion Points (CP) with the xp they get, which is a secondary advancement system for end-game. CP are account-wide so you can earn them on any level 50. Gear is capped at CP 160, so once you hit that you can farm or craft whatever you want to use thereafter in terms of equipment for your level 50s.

(And don't forget to feed mounts for all characters each day. Just takes a few minutes to get all of them, but slow moving mounts are a pain.)

Good luck and have fun :relaxed:

edit: just realized it may seem odd to mention things the OP probably knows, but sometimes totally new players or those gone for many years also check out threads like this and can be confused by some terms/suggestions
