Also important to remember that 'ping' is not latency which is the thing you actually observe.

    I remember.
Wasn't PING (ip address) a DOS executable that showed all routers in the path and measured response time in milliseconds for each one? Isn't the result best described as measuring latency?

When I say DOS, I may be referring to Netware's DOS 7.

    No hard evidence, only anecdotes.
But for what its worth, over the last 4-5 years the vast majority of Australians I've interacted with on forums and discord have played on NA server.

I have no idea about JPN or SEA.

But if someone can provide ZOS log in data showing that the majority of Aus and NZ players are on EU server, I'll send you all the gold tempers in my crafting bag.

Your deaths in Scalecaller = yep. Been there, done that. Probably 50 times.
As for PVP, I have only been in one major battle where I was not disconnected. Have also had the experience of riding from Ash to Nikel, seeing not another soul anywhere along the journey and none at Nikel, yet got disconnected before I made it to (not in) the front door...

    Edit: I play on EU.

This [the lag factor] is precisely why I gave up on PvP completely but with that said, there is more to be said for quality of game experience for people overall and if there are not enough players with subscriptions in the region I cant really see ZO doing anything about it.

I'm playing from Asia and although I would love to have better latency, but coming from a dying MMO with very few people playing I understand why ZOS don't want an empty server.

Also this would kind of demonstrate how/why the game is sometimes unplayable

ZOS needs to take into account (if they are not going to allow an OCEANIC server) that mechanics must factor in issues such as ping and latency from players in the Oceanic regions, and then they wouldnt get all the negative feedback when they nerf DLC dungeons for being to hard for a lot of players and or not enough players actually completing them. It is impossible to react to certain mechanics in this game with high ping. Simple as that.

Hi, I'm currently in the US. I play A LOT on the EU server and plan to move over seas next year. Currently I sit at 80 - 90 when I connect to the NA server and 180 - 200 when connected to the EU server. I would assume after I move I should see those numbers somewhat reverse?

Not sure why that wouldn't be the case.

I read the rest of your post but I'm Interested in how your ping is so low?

I have NBN Fibre to the Premises, a great gaming rig and quality networking hardware and I work in IT and have my gear set up to . You can have the best gaming PC in the world and pay for the fastest internet, but if your modem/router is 2nd rate, you're still going to have issues; I consider my Draytek an investment in both my leisure time and my sanity!

So did you have a separate post highlighting how you've configured your networking hardware
to avoid any local hardware/software issues
; and also what these local issue might be? I appear to have missed it and I'm sure that many, many people might be interested in sharing the benefit of your research and skill. Thanks in advance.

I'm still struggling with how my NBN satellite can firstly qualify as broadband; and secondly why it takes two full seconds travelling at light speed to get from where I am, to anywhere else in the world, with presumably less infrastructure in the pathway. I'd really appreciate your professional opinion on that also. thanks again.

Yep. Same. We've had this discussion in the past of course, with the main difference being I live in southwestern US, 40 miles from "real broadband"....

I'd be interested in the info from @Cave_Canem myself.

I'm from New Zealand, and have never seen a ping lower than 280. Most of the time it sets between 300 to 328. Yesterday It stayed in the 400's.

What I would give to be under 100. The game-play must feel amazing.

Have played in the UK and Scandinavia on the NA servers when overseas. Ping was still high but significantly better than being in Australia where it is 280 at best. Game ran much more smoothly and skills worked significantly better. And that was on fairly average laptop instead of a PC running a I7 9700 at 5GHz and a 1080Ti . PVP was very much better. Those that bounce around you, skills working perfectly thinking they are better than you, are largely doing so because their response time it far better. Throw in skill cancelling and you are screwed. Essentially having to fight with one arm tied behind your back and attached to a rope and pole.

I fully understand the performance issues that Oceanic players have, but the problem as always is that people who want to make a fair point muddy the waters by making a frankly pathetic poll that cannot remotely achieve anything.

The Facebook statement - https://www.facebook.com/370789406653075/posts/816267168771961/ - isn't primarily about performance, it's about the non-viability of launching a local server for those players given the limited number of players concerned and the resulting inferior game experience they would enjoy in terms of e.g. group and PvP activity etc. Counter that by all means, but do so by contesting the number of players, not by making immature and biased comments about the ping.

The problem is highlighted by the comment of one of the Oceanic players on Facebook who says that when he plays on the NA server in his timezone the server is dead, but when he plays at weird hours i.e. prime NA time it's so full he crashes. That's an indication that the number of players in his timezone isn't remotely viable for a separate megaserver, which is the only point ZOS are making.

I'm 100% in support of Oceanic players, but far from advancing their case this poll sets it back by trivialising the issue in immature terms. Press them on the routing issues, and if there are grounds on which to contest the player numbers then press them on that too.

Which is all well and good, but the problem is, nobody was really asking for an OCE megaserver. What people are asking for is a solution to the insane amount of latency the Akamai network adds to an already poor connection.

That can be remedied by talking to Akamai, figuring out where most of the OCE traffic is going through Akamai's network, and coming to a solution that routes traffic directly to the US so the traffic is scrubbed by the US Akamai network.

Proof? A VPN which has a US-based exit node does this very thing. I use Mudfish to help with my ping (no, Mudfish or a VPN is not the answer, I should not have to pay for a third-party VPN to have the game be playable), and it literally halves my ping. With a good node configuration in Mudfish, my ping goes from 400-600 to 250-350. There's no reason why Akamai couldn't do this themselves.

The reason why the Facebook post is receiving a lot of hate from the OCE playerbase is because it's answering a question that wasn't even asked. We all know an OCE megaserver is out of the question. Instead, we're simply asking for a solution to the impact Akamai has on our latency, with numerous threads spread across the forums, and the main thread being 9 pages long, with detailed evidence proving that Akamai is making the latency so much worse. Know what we got? Silence. Not just silence, but this Facebook post about something we never even asked about.

If I'm being honest, I consider that Facebook post a slap in the face, because it shows that they're not taking this problem seriously. Performance is so bad for an entire region that it has actually driven players away from the game, myself included.

Exactly. Classic PR spin from ZOS on that facebook post. Way to answer a question that was never asked.

The multiple threads in the forum are about the massive increase in ping measured and logged by many Oceanic/SE Asian players since ZOS started using Akamai as a scrubber. I have tracerts showing my central victorian connection being routed to HONG KONG and then The NETHERLANDS for my PC/NA connection. (I have also recently been routed to PERTH FROM MELBOURNE before going to Akamai scrubbers in Hong Kong)! If US players were routinely routed to Mongolia and then back to the US the forums would explode.

I used to play on an old gaming lap top using DSL. I had no issues with my 240ms ping. I was told the 240ms I got was to be expected. I now have a proper gaming PC, new router and broadband and my ping is averaging 360ms in 2019. So I checked. The only change is the Akamai re-routes and the delays in the scrubber hops. The timing exactly correlates. My ISP confirmed this. They cannot fix it. Only ZOS can direct Akamai to broadcast/advertise the Australian scrubber..or better still the US one... to ESO players.

ZOS refuse to discuss the real issue and refuse to respond to our reports with anything other than generic BS about turning add ons off and reposting routes. They 'muddied the waters' by answering an outlier question about Oceanic servers and not addressing the real issue...crappy akky. Of course people will jump on the Oceanic server idea. It looks like a silver bullet. They will continue to flog this horse until ZOS actually responds to real the question. What are they going to do about Akamai's routing and its affect on Oceanic playing.
