In other totally unrelated news, here's a recipe for authentic Hawaiian Kahlua Pig:

1 boneless pork shoulder or butt roast, 3-6 lbs
3-6 tablespoons kosher salt, or black/red volcanic sea salt if available
    Liquid smoke
    Optional: can crushed pineapple

    Instructions:

Place pork fat side up in slow cooker. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon salt per pound onto pork. If using pineapple (adds liquid and flavor), spread around base of roast. Pour 1 tsp per lb liquid smoke over salted roast. Cook on high 8-12 hrs or over night until pork is shreddable.

Tips: you make use 1/2 pork tenderloin steaks, placed under butt roast, for a lower fat option. You can also cook during the day then refrigerate overnight...the fat will collect at the top and solidify so that you can skim it off.

Serve with traditional mac salad, sticky rice and Hawaiian rolls.

    Sorry, princess.

Can I just use real smoker and not liquid smoke?

I just walk up, grab them, and walk straight to the nearest guard, pay a small fine, and continue on with the quest. You don't fail the quest for paying a bounty.

    Just this ^^^^

I just walk up - run up pick up and head off, if a guard gets you just pay fine and continue with quest. I have been court on the way to pig and also on the way back it doesn't interrupt quest.

Yes. Take the mudcrab apples, pay the fine. And then take the pig, and run back to the Jester. No sneaking at all, quest finishes without failure, no problem.

Go to the back center of the cart and target through the cart, you won't be able to walk forward. You never get close enough to the basket to get caught (sneak/crouch of course).

Edit: this is an achievement step (not getting caught) for those who don't realize.

actualy, you are fine getting caught stealing apples. you can NOT get caught by a butcher if you want achievement though. good thing I found avoiding butcher to be much easier, personaly.

I tend to stick to the left when just getting the princes, and then just run behind the buildings, again all the way to the left. works 100% of the time. unlike apples :/ (for me) and yes, you get achievement i did it today on 2 different character that didn't have it yet, and they got it. both got caught when stealing apple (I just waited out the bounty before starting the princess run)

It’s as annoying as the mammoth hunt Murkmire prologue quest. Another badly designed, never-to-be-fixed bit of quest drudgery that takes all the fun out of what should be a frivolous daily.

There’s nothing in the boxes that makes this quest even vaguely enjoyable.

It was bad two years ago. It was embarrassing that they hadn't done anything about it a year ago. Now? I just end up feeling vicarious shame for ZOS on that one. Really, no one cared enough to simply go in and make stealing the apples not knock you out of stealth? No one? That's just sad.

    This isn't D&D...
I am aware. However, I find the alignment chart the easiest way for people to understand what I mean when I talk about character morality (since most people are familiar with it).

But you are perfectly fine by cutting down and killing human being in dungeon just so you can get some part for firework?
I mean, the Red Rook Bandits are bandits and aligned with the Bloodthorn cult, so yeah, not really feeling bad about that. And Silumm is filled with Dominion soldiers while the particular character in question is DC so, again, yeah, I can much more easily rationalize.

Even if you brought apples from your own garden, you'd still be stealing the pig.
Ah yes, you do have a point here. Since you don't get a bounty for it though, I do find it easier to role play that my character takes the pig as directed and then brings it back, as a prank.

I'm not using some other rulebook. It's more that each of my characters have their own sense of morality: some are part of the TG but will not join the DB, others do both. This particular one does neither even though that means she will be short quite a few skillpoints from the storylines and will never be able to get all the achievements in game. It's a choice I have made and can avoid participating in content centered around that.

My point, rather, was that I dislike when a quest randomly dumps you into a scenario where you must break the law (as the game defines it) to progress. Vvardenfell did it. This holiday quest does it. The optional side goals in this and in new life for pelting the rulers or whatever are different, imo, because it's just for an achievement, not the quest itself.

There are some quests where you have an option to intimidate or pay someone - this character can pay rather than be mean, or if the alternative option is a fetch quest she can put in the extra work. Works for me, advances quest to next part. That's all I'm saying is that alternative paths that can get you to the next step would be nice when ZoS is designing new quests. Doing so will allow those that like to participate in the RP part of this MMORPG to have options. Even though ESO only loosely gives the illusion of choice (compared to some single player RPGs where choices can have drastic impacts on future quests), it still improves the replayability of the questlines, imo, and makes it fun to see how a story goes if you take the other path.

But that, I suppose, is a discussion for a separate thread as I have rambled on enough.

I frankly agree; I don't like breaking the law. Too many events - even jester events, seemingly unrelated to TG/DB celebration - force characters into conflict with law, not everyone can palate that. I'm playing as being law-abiding someone, and while I tend to shrug - well, not getting rewards for the event isn't end of the world - I am in my right to express my opinion about it, and this is it: it's in poor taste to design events like that. I'd really appreciate a more flexible choice of options in quest design; not everyone comes to ESO to unhinge their inner kleptomaniac.

And yes, it's not about just this quest, Vvardenfell quests do that, some side quests do that. Sure I'd like to help an argonian in Auridon to fix her mechanical friend, but it beats me why I'm only given the option to steal parts for it as opposed to just go to their owners and offer some gold for them - name your price, folks. Or let me go into nearest dwemer-themed delve and recover the missing parts. Some quests railroad players through ugliest choices possible for no reason at all.

I tend to sneak but it often don't work, the time it work I think some has killed of or distracted the npc.
Check that you don't have stolen times and pay the fine.
The apple is not confiscated as its an quest item.

Think I managed to do it once. It's clearly bugged or scripted such that stealth doesn't work at all. I just steal it without sneaking and then going straight to a guard to pay of the small bounty and the proceeding with the quest. The Apple quest item doesn't count as a stolen item, so it won't be lost upon getting taken by a guard.

Not entirely true. At least not in my recent experience.

I’ve been using the “just get a bounty and pay it” approach this year and on two different occasions the guard confiscated the apple when collecting to bounty, so I ended up having to pay it twice. It’s definitely buggy.

As for the liquid smoke, that's a lot. Can you get away with half that amount? Too much liquid smoke always makes whatever you are eating taste like burnt tires.

This is what I do, and 90% of the time it works. Last night, it worked for my first character, but my second got a bounty. Might have been a little off center or an NPC turned just the right way, but it works most of the time.

I also have clemency, so I did get caught by a guard on my way to the pig, when I had a bounty, but I just used clemency. Then, the time it took for me to get the pig, my bounty wore off, and I just ran by the guard with the pig.

I got a bounty twice and no bounty a few other times (must have not been seen). The funny thing is, the first time I just mounted up (and have shadow rider passive) and ran the entire quest without being caught by a guard even though I was not trying to avoid them. The next character was not so lucky and had to pay the small fine.

I've had this happen a few times as well when the guard would confiscate the apple you stole. I think it has to do with whether you have other stolen items in your inventory. I think if you have other stolen goods, the apple gets picked up with the rest. If the apple is the only stolen loot, you pay the fine and keep the apple.

As for me, I steal the apple and switch to another character. By the time I cycle back, the bounty is gone and I'm free to continue.
