Lost my way again. Just want to have fun again. How to play a sorcerer for fun and not power build.

This is not an ESO is a bad thread, but it's a Me thread. It seems I have lost my way again in having fun with ESO. When I was on PC, I had the same issues and someone god bless their soul helped me by crafting me some stuff and made the game a bit easier for me. I stopped playing on PC and went back to Xbox since I like playing ESO on the Xbox One X. It just plays better than my laptop. :)

So I finally hit the CP threshold and of course the game is a bit harder. That is not what is bothering me. I for some reason just can't play a sorcerer. Only way I can do good damage is using stamina based weapons. I am not having fun using staves because I rather cast magical powers instead, but don't seem to be doing good damage. I did the Google fu, Youtube and here on the forums and just read "meta" builds, that I don't really want to do.

I guess because of my depression, and not having fun with the events Zenimax Studios is putting out, it puts me off ESO. So I took a break. Coming back, I am having fun again about not worrying about meta, or how things should be done. I have made new characters and builds that are not a sorcerer and like them. I took a break from my Dragon Knight and made a Niteblade. It seems I am having more fun with the nite blade since I feel the weapons I use as my mage is more suited for he Niteblade.

Thing is, I still want to try playing my sorcerer again. He is an Altmer. I changed from magika to stamina since I seem to do more damage with bows and swords/daggers instead of magik powers. I tried using a stave but I rather not use them since they are just like a bow or ranged weapon even when I am in melee combat and that turns me off, since for me, I do more damage with swords.

I am not giving up on my character so I am thinking of going back to resetting my skills, and stats back to magika, but like to see what and how people play their sorcerers for fun and how they do lots of damage with magika or I should say spells. Should I go back to magika based stats, or stick with stamina? I am using more skills in bows and dual wield than magika since it's the only way I know how to do more damage.

So what am I not seeing? Sorry I forget the names, but the first spell we get, shoots electricity and can morph to proc (is that the correct name?) if I use another magika spell and cast it right away and cheaper. I liked using that. But since I am not doing much damage with it, just like 3000-5000 if I am lucky, I do more damage, and faster damage with swords/daggers and bow. So I am using those skills that take away from magika skills so there for that electrical spell, doesn't do much use for me.

So what other sorcerer skills do people use and why? I just can't open my eyes and see what other things sorcerers can do except for having the 10 second shield and the few electrical spells we start with. I just don't seem to use anything else except for the Ultimate power of The Emperor's finger lightning of death. (again, depression kicking in, so can't recall names right now.)

Where are you putting your attributes? Which armour? What passives? Which weapon skills, which guild skills, which class abilities? What gear/sets? How have you spent your CP? What is your rotation?

    Stam sorc or mag sorc?

Here is a sorc build for solo play:

In PvE my damage builds use all the storm calling skills and all the destruction staff skills that change based on the staff being used. It makes me feel like a true mage, while still allowing me to dish out decent damage.

    Favorite Foods and Potions

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

if your goal is damage...like damage required for

trials leaderboard chasing then you either follow meta (most cases)

or invent meta that other people gonna follow (really rare lol)

if your goal is just having fun then why even care about stats and numbers

just use anything that you find fancy enough to make you happy

(but don't expect that those who care about those things gonna be happy

about your presense in group content ;) )

as for now it just looks like you have very little experience and understandment

of basic game mechanics like stats distribution, rotations, waving etc.

at least ask yourself - are you REALLY intrested in meta-omg-numbers

or you play ESO for some other reason than light attack - skill - light attack - skill... repeat

CP threshold? Is it the cap or just hitting level 50?

If you play a magika sorc you need points in magicka... Then you have to decide what you want to do.

Staff is needed because you typically use force shock spell from the staff skill line because sorcerers lack any instant damage abilites which is always about timing.

Use and wait for daedric curse to tick with mage fury then use force shock in between that... if crystal fragments procs wait for daedric curse to explode and use your fragment while reapplying mages fury for the execute effect. The burst should overwhelm any opponent. Weaving light attacks with force shock to maximize damage and using heavy attacks to recover magicka.

Thats the gist of our damage. The other part is figuring where the rest comes from, yourself or pets.

Then you need to find a set to use.

I would suggest starting out with julianos 5 piece, twilight 2 piece with weapons that are infused and you weapons with precise and buying the willpower rings with arcane trait... that should be easy to get as a starting out kit.

Then find the dungeon or zones with the sets for the build you want. For example if you want use pets necropotence is really good to use and is found in rivernspire.

As for CP? You want to spend it in arcanist, tenacity, master at arms, elemental expert, elf born, etc... don't worry about spending the maximum amount of points as there is diminishing returns for each point spent that at higher values those points raise the stat less.

I keep changing so I can't remember what I did before, and what I am using now. Thank you for the link. I like the simpleness of the bar. There is a skill or two I didn't even know existed there. Will have to do some research for it now.

Don't really want to use staves. To me they are just like a gun. Wish it would have enhanced a sorcerer not the reason why to give it spells and what not. Will give it a try. :)
If you want to dish out pain with your magsorc go with this sets, just for fun,
5 scathing mage, 5 mothers sorrow, whatever monster set. Infused weapon with berserker enchant. Spell damage jewely and infused trait.
Skills, power surge, haunting curse, destructive reach, radiant magelight, crystal fragments.
I use this on both bars.
Also use it on bg, lots of fun.

I guess this is my problem. I don't have a clue what you said LMFAO. I remember when I had this problem before someone told me because I am in the CPs now (50 right now, still a long ways to go) is one of the main issues I am having. I guess since I have been doing a lot of googling how to complete quests I wanted to stop this, so I don't know where or what to get through sets since I wanted to find them on my own. Maybe it's time to rethink that now. :)

I tried. Funny enough, I think I was doing more damage in PvE as a healer lol. Having 2 or 3 slots using the staff as healing meant less attacking skills. I am not fast enough to switch on the fly. Another problem I have.

Thing is, using the staff for me is like using it as a gun. I wanted more upfront combat but maybe it's not for me, and I really need to rethink how to play. I guess in previous The Elder Scrolls game, I played more like a jedi. Uses a long sword with powers.

I don't know maybe because I am using the weapons skills doesn't leave me much for actual sorcerer skills.

Or a tank. Despite the common misconception, sorcs can tank too. ;)

I can't even do major damage, who can I be a tank? LOL. Serious question. I don't know how to tank. Just get hit a lot? I guess I am just too old, and coming into MMOs late in my life, I just don't understand everything.
if your goal is damage...like damage required for

trials leaderboard chasing then you either follow meta (most cases)

or invent meta that other people gonna follow (really rare lol)

I just do PvE. I am not good enough for PvP or would want to ruin someones fun because I suck at the game. So I play as it is a single player game and have fun for me, and not take someone else's fun for not being good.
if your goal is just having fun then why even care about stats and numbers

just use anything that you find fancy enough to make you happy

(but don't expect that those who care about those things gonna be happy

That is true, I am not really worried about stats and numbers. I have the most fun when I don't care about stats and numbers. Thing is, I am dying a lot now and that is not fun. I just need to do a bit more damage on the bigger bosses. I tried the, kill as fast as possible, but realized it wasn't fun and sometimes being in a long fight is fun. Thing is, going from normal enemies to a boss, is just not fun. I can keep my own against a 100K enemy for example but then a boss is like 2 million. HUGE discrepancy there.

That is why I like to do more damage, so am using a bow and sword/dagger since I can't do as much damage using magik spells.
as for now it just looks like you have very little experience and understandment

That is my problem. I don't understand. Been playing since almost launch on and off. Playing as if was a TES game and that is the wrong way. This is really my first MMO going full all in, and still don't understand a lot. Didn't matter until now, since I am just not doing as much damage as I want.

I guess I might have to use staves to do that. I am trying not to use them, but maybe a sorcerer just HAS to USE staves to do lots of damage. Is there a way to have magika as the main source and not use all stamina and not using staves?
of basic game mechanics like stats distribution, rotations, waving etc.

I am trying. I am never good at twitch games. I have a horrible memory. Hence why I can't name things properly. So trying to remember rotations, and weaving and what not, I just can't get a grasp on. I know, it's a me problem.
at least ask yourself - are you REALLY intrested in meta-omg-numbers

or you play ESO for some other reason than light attack - skill - light attack - skill... repeat

Not interested in met or met omg numbers at all. :) Just like to do more damage using magic spells. I just find it funny I can do 10K damage with a bow at a distance but only 5K max using crystal fragments. (I think that is what the spell is called.)

I like to thank everyone for helping me out. It is greatly appreciated.

The basic fun way to play a sorcerer from a magicka race is:
    • Go magicka. :)
    • Use one or both pets.
    • Use lightning heavy attacks, because lightning heavy attacks are more fun than inferno ones.
    • Slot Crushing Shock or Force Pulse (unless you've done the grind for Elemental Weapon), because it can be frustrating not to have an instant-cast skill.

The exact approach I'm taking right now in hard content -- e.g. duoing vet dungeons with a tank who supplies Elemental Blockade -- is:
    • Both pets x2 (they have to be on both bars)
    • Elemental Blockade
    • Liquid Lightning
    • Daedric Prey (huge boost to pet damage in boss fights)
    • Empowered Ward (I often cast it in rotation rather than saving it for emergencies)
    • Power Surge
    • Crushing Shock
    • Greater Storm Atronach as my more common ultimate
    • Thunderous Rage as my other ultimate

If you drop Volatile Familiar x 2 (in which case you may also drop Daedric Prey) you have room for fun skills such as Crystal Fragments, Endless Rage or Boundless Storm.

    @Davor You're welcome.

I explicitly referred to the linked build as a solo build -- that is because it is configured such that it usable for all overland solo content without requirement for ally/friendly buffs or debuffs. Spinner set provides penetration (so no need for other source, e.g. elemental drain et al) and combined with spell erosion = 1160; this is too high for group content (as target debuffs will cause you to over penetrate == wasted dps) -- you'll need to switch it for something like Mother's Sorrow or Burning Spell Weave. The abilities slotted are there because of passives that boost your stats, and are configured for those (some skills, like inner light, aren't intended for use at all, just slotted for prophesy = damage buff). Back bar is your DoT/AoE bar, front bar is single target.

As long as you keep Power Surge up, your total stats are 60%+ crit, 42K magicka, and just shy of 3K spell damage (just pull power surge before every fight and every other rotation on long fights). Using tri-food means enough stamina for defensive manoeuvres (bi-food for dungeons though) This build requires a smaller rotation that deviates slightly from the usual magsorc rotation, but will enable you to be throwing down ~35K dps (enough for all solo content and WBs):

Really going stam or mag is just up to your preferred playstyle.

Stam sorc suffers from a lack of class skills but is still quite fun. For that I would go bow and with dw or 2h.

non pet mag sorc is probably the weakest. Suffers from poor sustain and poor survivability. I probably wouldnt recommend this one though it is what I play ( im also on the forums daily bitching about how much it sucks)

pet sorc is the best. good damage, good sustain, decent survivability.

Sounds like you like stam, i would just go with that. Your losing out by keeping it altmer if you go stam but if your not concerned with meta then it shouldnt impact you.

Set up really depends on what your going for. And how you want to play again. I would definitely back bar bow, use surge and hurricane in all cases. Dw is good for both pvp and pve. 2h is really only an option for pvp, you can use it in pve but it can be frustrating there.

some sets to ck out: (not meta)

    Cowards (pvp)
    bone pirate (both)
    swordsinger (pvp 2h only)
    unfathomable darkness ( both)
    twin sisters ( pvp)
blooddrinker ( pvp pairs nice with twin sisters but is a tough set to get)
    battlefield acrobatic (pvp)
    briarheart (both)
    deadly strikes (both)
    defiler(pvp)
    leviathin (both)
    senche ( if woodelf pvp)
    soldier of anguish (pvp)
    ravanger (pvp)
    7th leigion (pvp)

Mothers sorrow set is farmed in deshaan.
Scathing mage in white gold tower.
Upgrade your stuff to purple, it'll do.
Put berserker enchant on your weapons dont bother transmutting the trait.
Put spell damage enchant on your jewelry again dont bother transmutting the trait.
    Get the apprentice mundus.

Use power surgebefore starting a fight, put haunting curse on enemy, then light attack and endless fury, everytime crysfrag process use it.

Good enough for quest and overland stuff.

If you are not looking for power, then that opens up a lot of build options :)

how about a 5/6 pet sorc? 2 from skill line, 1 from storm atroach ult and 3 from proc set. You only need to spam curse and light/heavy attack and keep up a shield :)

Or a tank. Despite the common misconception, sorcs can tank too. ;)

Good point ..😱 why was I advocating my job get sloten. We need more tanks instead.

P.S inside joke is I am most famous Sorc healer in game and long time advocate for all healers.
Exactly. Employing the age old strategy of "hitting things until it dies" is my job, and there's already more than enough competition. Now tanks, on the other hand, tanks are what's really in demand.

I've honestly been thoroughly enjoying playing the One Bar Plague Doctor vMA Sorc (though I use both bars, xD) in the main game.
I'm tanky enough to survive whatever I want but I can still do some okay damage so win/win.

I just do PvE. I am not good enough for PvP or would want to ruin someones fun because I suck at the game. So I play as it is a single player game and have fun for me, and not take someone else's fun for not being good.

I've been playing a long time (since Beta), but that's pretty much what I do, because that's what's fun for me. I like overland, quests, delves, and joining up with folks casually for Dolmens & World Bosses. It is a fun game to play as you like, rather than as you "have to" to fill a specific role.

One of my favorite skills with a sorc is Hurricane (morph of Lightening Form). This is great for groups of mobs.
If you go Destruction Staff, I really like the skill Flame Touch (Destructive Touch with a flame staff). It knocks back the enemy, a good "get off me!" skill when wearing light armor and fighting.

I see you are at CP 50. It's kind of a tough place between 10-160 CP, but you will get there. And you only have to do it once in your ESO life. Once you get to CP 160 you will have good gear and enough skill points to do decent damage.

    Have fun!!

Aren't you that guy who recently posted something like "I am a solo only player and I cannot tank in ESO"?

Anyway one possibility how to have fun on sorc:
get yourself Mad tinkerer set, add anything you like, mother, julies, willpower + some random weapons, (I love Unfathomable darkness on my stam alts but alas, stam set) if you can get it, Maw monster set, go pet build and roll on, watching your numerous minions butchering everything while you have a smoke. Tinkerer procs pretty often and I love to see them mobs flying around.

The problem is probably that you got into good habits for your stamina-based melee character(s) and tried to play a magicka-based one the same way, which failed. If you want to be different with a sorc, you may want to try a pet sorc build, where the summoned creature is the one that runs in and fights close, while you stand back and lob grenades. You may not end up playing that way, but it will get you accustomed to the ranged position.

Find magical skills that match up to your prior bow usage, and set your back bar up with those "magic arrows" for AoE and such. That part of your rotation will then feel the same, and be easier. And then practice on a dummy at the appropriate range.

    HOLD YOUR HORSES.
Ok always wanted to say that in an answer. So since you want to play melee magicka sorcerer there are some things you need to know.
    1. Damage from Magicka skills scale from max magicka, and damage from stamina skills scale from max stamina.
    2. Because of using staves, that have Magicka abilities, is recommended. Even if it is just a staff on back bar(lightening theme) just to have it there for the wall of elements, and the ultimate feels like belongs in the lightening sorcerer :D.
    3. Front bat if you want swords. Use swords. Only weapons that have passives for Magicka abilities (buffs over all damage a bit).
    4. Survivability. Sorcerer is the class with most survivability I know (maybe excluding night blade) and I would recommend you trying to do this every battle: use surge(or morphs), use boundless storm(or other morph, hurricane, but hurricane scales of stamina), put lightening flood on the ranged mobs and then go stand on them while spamming mages wrath at everyone. Yes I just named 4 skills from the lightening skill line. Because let's be honest, you didn't sound like you want pets, and dark magic is... What it is, has 1 usable skill and needs experience to use.

I tried to keep suggestions as casual as I could, hope I helped.

    Skills mentioned:
    1. Surge, gives u heals on crits, the power surge morph gives you more spell damage as well.
    2. Boundless storm, damages every second in 5m range around you and gives you protection buffs.
    3. Lightening flood, Huge damage small AoE DoT effect.
    4. Mages wrath: executes (deals extra damage to mobs below 20% with an AoE effect).

Remember, as long as you keep up your DoT effects and have surge active, it is really hard to die in overland. (Seriously)

Edit: also remember to always eat food!! Max health will help you survive while max Magicka will pump up your damage!

Edit 2: if you are going for Magicka sorcerer I have listed all useful abilities in a post in this thread, sadly I am on phone so can't link the exact comment, you will have to scroll up. https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/454129/lightning-magsorc#latest

If you are going stamina focused on your sorcerer, as you mentioned in your initial post, you can set up a very strong character for pretty much any content. Put 64 points into stamina and get a couple decent easy to get sets on, like Hunding’s Rage, Briarheart, Night Mother’s Gaze (for solo play).

On your bow bar, get endless hail and poison injection, with the ballista ultimate. Assuming you go dual-wield on your other bar, get shrouded daggers and either blood craze for a bit of extra healing, or rending slashes for more damage, with flawless dawnbreaker as your ultimate. Your survival skills are blade cloak, hurricane and critical surge.

Always keep critical surge up, along with hurricane and blade cloak. Maintain all of your danage over time skills throughout battles. You can use shrouded daggers as your spammable when facing groups, or use blood craze / rending slashes against single targets.

As long as you are damaging enemies with surge running, you will be very hard to kill. You should find you can deal with world bosses, and solo all sorts of group content with this setup. This is a quick and dirty stamina sorcerer guide, but you can take the basic idea and refine it with better gear and additional skill choices.

I have a non-meta build on my MagSorc and even though he's not doing as much DPS as the meta build I can still solo public dungeons with relative ease and there is nothing overland I can't handle except solo'ing WBs. I have a ton of fun with his build and unless I decide to get into Vet content I'm not going to change it. My MagSorc is an Altmer also and I run with one pet.

This is what I have on him ATM though I do swap out a couple abilities depending on the situation:
~Front Bar - Blockade Of Storms, Liquid Lightning, Daedric Tomb, Volatile Familiar, Haunting Curse, ultima is Ice Comet. (sometimes swap out Haunting Curse for Endless Fury)
~Back Bar - Crystal Fragments, Boundless Storm, Conjured Ward, Volatile Familiar, Streak, ultima is Greater Storm Atronach. (sometimes swap out Streak for Bound Aegis or Annulment)

Gear is five pieces of Necropotence, four pieces of Law of Julianos (one is the staffs so it counts as two for the full set), two pieces of Seducer. Lightening staff both bars. Divines all gear. Staffs are Charged and Sharpened.

I want to make a MagSorc using only Mages and Psijic Guild abilities just for fun. I know it will be relatively weak but again, for... fun. LOL.

No, am not. :) Also thank you very much for the advice as well.

After reading all the comments, it seems I have forgotten that ESO is mostly set based. I keep thinking in The Elder Scrolls way instead of the opposite and go by what sets we can have. So I take it since I am leveling up fast in CP I may as well not worry about sets until I hit 160 CP correct? After all trying to get to purple takes up a lot of resources that for me are hard to find.

Again, thank you very much everyone, there are lots of things I want to try out with the varying builds people gave. Looks like it will be fun to try, and if I don't like, go on to the next one. :)

Davor, I don't have a level 50 pet sorc yet, but I can hardly wait to get there. At lower levels they're easy to play, and a LOT of fun even with just gear you find around.

So thanks for your great questions, and thanks also to everyone who answered so kindly. Bookmarking thread so when my first sorc gets to 50 I can find it again!

If you like to get up close and personal with mobs the heavy set from Malabal Tor is a lot of fun (thunderbug). Whenever you take melee damage it pulses a big ring of lightning. I'm right there with you wishing that swords recovered magicka, I run sword and board on my magDK just because it looks cool. It's hard running something other than a staff since your regen is low. Running bright throat's boast helps.

I use to run pets. Had fun with it. I thought because I had 2 pets on both bars, took up skills so that is why I didn't do too much damage. I wanted to see if I could actually do good without them and got caught up with having to do good in damage. It does seem I have lost my way when I need to be better so I can try PvP or trials, and forgot the real reason as to why I restarted ESO in the first place.

Well at least some good came out of me loosing my way. I have found playing a Knightblade and Dragon Knight fun when before I didn't.
