Are lore breaking names bothering you?

Pps: not talking about e.g. a nord with an argonian name or the such...that is still lore friendly - even funny names can be very lore friendly...im talking about gamer tags and the such that have nothing to do with elder scrolls

The problem is that the OP is talking about Gamer Tags and not character names. You do realize people choose their gamer tags independently of any particular game. Forcing players to change their Gamer Tags to suit your lore needs is absurd.

I've seen a lot of people giving examples of bad names which include numbers. I realise at least some of these are probably just random examples of something which is obviously not a real name, but if you're actually seeing names like that in-game you might want to check your UI settings, because you can't put numbers into character names, but you can put them in account names.

Go to Settings > Interface and look for Display Name (on PC it's the first option) and make sure it's set to 'Prefer Character Name', otherwise what you'll see as their name is actually their account name, which is much less likely to be lore friendly (especially on consoles where its their gamer tag and has to be used across all games).

On PC you can then use addons like Azurah to hide the account name completely, so you only see the character name. It won't totally fix the problem but it will eliminate a lot of 'inappropriate' names.

I think this nails the issue here perfectly. Sorry if I misunderstood before.

I have to chuckle at the last part of this. My PSN name is actually Elder Scrolls lore friendly.

    I knew someone's would be. :D

I originally wrote that the tag wouldn't be lore friendly, then realised actually some would and changed it. But then I guess you'd run into the same problem in different games where a TES friendly name looks out of place.

My characters do have names that I'd consider appropriate, especially when some races - especially Argonians and Nords - tend to have descriptive nicknames to replace or supplement their given names. So Unna Bear-Rider rides a bear, Cat Man Dhou is a Khajjit.

Usernames are outside the scope of a single game, so they don't worry me at all. And "gamertag" is a console affectation, and doesn't apply to the PC master-race.

Its not even the character names that bother me the most. On console its obscene gamertags since the font for them is larger over your head than the char name.

For my personal joy I always try to go for a lore friendly name, just feels right for me and more authentic. I mean there a a lot of terrible names, I agree, but you know people are different so is there "taste".

Lore breaking names don't bother me
Even though I'm a roleplayer, I really don't care if someone is using their gamer tag. It just...never occured to me to care? I just mentally filter them out knowing I share the same space with other people who don't play the game for the same reasons I do. Sure, really obscene, disgusting names might bother me- especially if the person is trolling the world chat, but normal gamer tags kinda pass right over my head.

It's a bit like walking down the street, and seeing a guy wearing a t-shirt I wouldn't particularly want to wear myself. If he wants to have that attached to his identity, that's fine with me. I don't need to make him wear a pretty blouse with flowers on it to disguise his real interest in t-shirts covered in big-eyed kittens shouting Einstein quotes while eating hotdogs and riding unicorns.

At first, yes. Then I turned off the nameplates above peoples heads. I realized my immersion is subject to the rest of the world, however crazy or weird that might be. My second has a lore friendly name, and after that it devolves into humor and whatever.

They do bother me and some naming rules should be implemented
Edit: I somehow voted wrong - I don't care about names.

After 10 minutes trying to come up with a name that wasn't used, my first character basically got a keyboard face roll. I don't even remember what it is, but it's meaningless. My second character, Cheesy Poopkins, came about because I spent the 10 minutes trying to come up with a name immediately after having watched South Park.

I just don't have the energy to devote to making a name that everybody will ignore in favor of my xbox gamer tag anyway. Also, how would you validate names? "lore friendly" isn't something that can be computer validated - you would have to have it be approved by a board, which would take days, during which you can't play.

Khajiit does not understand what this lore thing is so she cannot be offended by the lack of it no.

A good name is always an interesting diversion - a good name that is. A name you could live with. A name born of genuine thought and consideration. It can be a funny name yes - humour is not excluded.

Names based on parts of the anatomy, mothers of dragons, excessive consonants and bodily functions often make this one want to sigh and hide behind her whiskers yes.

A name is a very important thing. It is your first calling card to the world. Choose carefully travellers.

I do miss the RP servers of the old MMOs where we had some name enforcement. I can't stand ridiculous names and it kills my immersion. I'm not talking about names like an Argonian named Ren Riverlord that might break from the lore and norm a bit, I'm talking foolish crap like Imzleetpotatoe, etc.

I think they do it just so they can feel like that special snowflake their parents always told them they were.

ah, didn't know op was asking about gamer tags. Gamer tags don't bother me at all, it's character names like "noobslayer666" that force my eyes into an involuntary roll.

I'll always appreciate a goofy or lore breaking character name that shows some wit though. There was one person running around as Minimarco...

About names - I abstract myself from them. Some make you smile. And it can be useful - if you're looking at a toon with some ridiculous l33t in his name, you're... well... prepared for the worst automatically))
About game tags - that's out of question. It's not a name, it's your account! That would be ridiculous if we would be forced to think about our ACCOUNTS (and see "this name is used" over, and over, and OVER again). I can use my mail, my old nickname, whatever - as long as it doesn't insult anyone. Don't like my ACCOUNT? well darn.

Not at all, I enjoy having fun. I mean whenever I get to any major city with all the shiny odd colored gear and crown crate mounts it reminds me of a West Hollywood parade. People are having a good time which is a good thing. :)

It Zos would ever push us to have a lore friendly name, then every Nord should be forced to have the drunk personality on nonstop.

I have lost of in-game friends with silly names.

But I intentionally made up a hypothetical name that people wouldn't be likely to use for any reason other than to provoke. There's not much I'm likely to have in common with a provocateur.
