Code is based in logic and math. Stats are based in math.... I am not even sure what this thread is about. You want a game that based in feelings? How would you even put that together without math ???

Math in games makes my brain hurt! I don't play games to do math (that's too much like work!)......I play for entertainment/fun. When I see someone post all the numbers for a certain build or skills rotation, I want to read it and understand it, but then my brain starts to bleed and I have to run away! :p

Yep. After that, my soul starts bleeding from a trillion tiny cuts. :'(

The best thing to me about the CP system is that I can use my points on new leveling toons so math stops mattering. Then I can just go have fun with whatever weird combo I want instead of juggling set bonuses and gearing woes. I'm scared to death at what ZOS might be engineering for the system in the future. They seem determined to ruin everything I find fun.

If by math you mean balance I think the only real problem with balance is the fact the PvP and PvE aren't balanced separately. To achieve balance in one affects the other and frequently that affect is negative. This results in another round of re-balancing to fix what was broken and the cycle repeats. I think ZOS would find much more stability if they split PvP and PvE skill stats as a change would only affect the one environment reducing its impact on the other.

You don't have to min/max, ESO is the kind of the game where it doesn't really matter how perfect your DPS is. It helps in certain situations sure, but it isn't a barrier of entry and nor is your build.

My point is, play what you want to play, and how you want to play it.

Until you join a PvE raid and they ask you what your DPS is.

I play my own build though. No min-maxing, no fotm. It can be done for overland and even normal dungeon. And PvP if course, but the question is then, can you compete with fotm builds?
As soon as you join a veteran dungeon or trial people will ask about dps sometimes.

Blending the disciplines of the stealthy agent and subtle wizard, I move unseen and undetected, foil locks and traps, and teleport to safety when threatened, or strike like a viper from ambush. The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."

It likely exists in all games but eso will show emphasis because of the small group of players who control perception. In reality most of the game you don't have to worry about it. If that doesn't work become a tank...we need more tanks ...😉

Every MMORPG that has challenging content has people that do the math. Even Neverwinter before it went heavy P2W had math and theory crafters. SWTOR had math crunchers before they drove their raiders away. There they figured out how much of each stat was best.

Much simpler games like WoW and FF have those that figure out the best rotation.

But yes, most do not really have to worry about it to much as long as their choices make sense. Also, player skill goes much further than what sets we use.

This might end up being a little off topic...
I'm always wondering what's so special about TES that people keep playing the "but it is TES!"-card like it's some form of holy grail. Now don't get me wrong, I like TES, I played basically all the single player games since Oblivion and enjoyed the world and the setting. But at the end of the day, it is still a fantasy world (and not even the most creative one) fitted into the boundaries of a game. It's not a novel, it's not a movie, it's not an adventure, it's a roleplaying game with all the mechanics and features that come with it. At the end of the day, you can play about 95% of the game without maxing anything or without even caring about your skills. I know CP810+ people who do a whopping 10k DPS and are having fun.
And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Many people play this game, because of the single player games. They don't understand what an MMO is, and expect this game to be exactly like the single player games, but with the option to play with friends.

I feel like some didn't really get what I intendet with this poll and what the aspects really were I was talking about
As I said, of course a game can't work without maths and has to be calculated and balanced.. That's not the topic and it's not even discussable, so..
My topic was, and it really was, how many people (and I kinda felt like the devs too) only looked at the numbers, min/maxers, etc and not how things feel and I felt like that caused some issues as we've seen with the current racial changes.. People were really angry just because of some numbers and I thinks that is about numbers/math that might be too much..
I really feel like some people look for fights and seek misunderstandable statements to give a bad reply to it.
Nothing negative here. The opposite is the case. I wanted clarification and I found that my focus was changed in a direction I didn't feel good with.
And in fact there are two no options for me to seperate why one said no
"too many whiners" and "should be the way it is"
I really got my answers and for me the topic is done. Really some seem to be offended while I only want people to have fun the way they want, without arguing that much about unimportant things
    Having that said, have fun
    Stay positive

For me I care more about the numbers and stats of my characters. Why? I don't find ESO to be an immersive game, the combat system and just the game in general just isn't immersive for me.
Overload rework. Power Overload now does physical damage and grants you the power of a tornado: You throw a brick at the target with a light attack, and you hammer your head into that brick with every heavy attack. We have decreased its Ultimate cost, but increased the chance that you get stuck in the animation.

I think there is too much reliance on the math, and it's created a gap between the have and havenots that is excessive and detrimental to the game.

For example, it should not be possible for a single character to obliterate every enemy in a dungeon in one or two moves. I've seen it, more than once.

Depends on whether you're talking about the game as developed or the behavior of players who kick others who are capable of completing content because they feel entitled to group only with folks whose numbers are equal to or greater than their own. At their core games are math. It's what gets done with that math that can be problematic. And actually not only by the players but also by the content designers.

The entire structure of this game is too rigid. Sure you can play what you want, but you'll be stuck doing that until you decide to leave the game. Everything else if you want to actually progress or rise to the top is a pigeon-holed impossible formula to solve. Or just dumb luck.

No matter how you shape it, math is always the key factor. Some games require more personal skill and situational ability usage but that is more for action combat games, which ESO is not. Though all games eventually comes down to math and stats.

    Math is for nerds
Welcome, Moon-and-Star, to this place where destiny is made.

I play healers or DPS often for vet dungeons and trials (NA, CP810+). I play mostly elves or Argonians.
I primarily play Damage-Based stuff in PvP, but occasionally I'll play something tanky or got the heals.
I also love gaining more knowledge both metaphysical and mundane regarding TES lore.

I also occasionally role-play, but I prefer playing the game.

even in a game (havnt really found one yet in the fantasy MMO genre) where:

    1) every class specific skill had an analogue (something that effectively did the same thing even if its in a different visual way)
    2) so called BiS equipment was eventually availaible to every player

    there would still be:

    1) skill gap ... where selecting the right skill at the right time makes a difference
    2) reaction gap ... where connection speed and physical limits makes adifference
    3) knowledge gap ... where knowing whats happening/about to happen makes a difference
    4) team work gap ... where team play and communication makes a difference

Nice point. The most of my thoughts cencerned players actually. Not the game mechanics or calculations
