If the devs want a good view of what the actual Battlegrounds play like , day after day, they'd need to take regular characters in and play (and experience the bugs).

They definitely do this. I've been in several games with Gilliam and Rich. Probably other devs too but these are the only two whose live toons I recognize.1 -
