Name already in use?

I'm pretty sure it did not get sniped since the name I use for games is a made up word with no meaning to anyone else but myself. I see this happening to other people who were in the betas.

Is this some kind of error where the game thinks the name is still assigned to the beta character? Maybe somewhere in the database the character is wiped but the name is still flagged as being in use?

I don't know, it's frustrating.

Is it the same as your login name? That seems to be a common thread I see.

Yes, it is actually. The name I'm trying to use is 'Nehefer', same as my forum account (which was automatically created) and login name.

As I said, very unlikely someone sniped a random string of letters with no meaning to anyone else but myself.

Don't have a solution other than others mentioning the same issue have that on common.

    This isn't looking too good.

    Try using something like, "Neh'efer"
    Crotchety Old Man Guild

I could, but I'd rather wait to see what's going on and why so many people are having this issue.

Maybe that's why I wasn't able to select the name I wanted.

We ran into a similar issue, using made up names that have never been taken elsewhere. Wonder if its just due to everyone being piled into the same megaserver, or if there is an issue as you've theorized.

I mean, if you were trying to get "Okatagaraath", it does seem unlikely someone else might have sniped it, unless it's a popular name I haven't heard before.

    Got a response from support:
Response By Email (Steve) (04/03/2014 09:49 PM)
    Greetings!

Thank you for contacting The Elder Scrolls Online Team.

I totally understand your issue. In order to move forward, I will need account verification, which can only be completed with a validation of the following data points:

    Payment Method
Last 4 digits of the credit card number
    Paypal transaction ID
The Answer to the Secret Question

Once we've received the information, we can further investigate this matter.

I provided the info, except for the Paypal transaction ID because I didn't use Paypal at all with ESO. This was a few days ago.

I've been patient, but this has gone on for too long. Can I get a response, please?

The only way i see this happening is that someone saw your name in a chat during the beta period, thought it was a cool name and decided to nick it for himself.
    Currently playing:

I am glad I got up early on Sunday to grab "Wears-Much-Glitter" for my Argonian Templar, then. Yeah, the competition for that name was obviously destined to be fierce.

This doesn't usually happen with a string of random letters which hold no meaning to anyone else but myself.

I, too, thought there was no way my names could have been sniped before I was able to nab em.
A few friends and I were some of the very first on the scene when they started early access-- like, within seconds of access-- and the names we wanted--albeit popular names--were already taken.

    "Valar Morghulis" and "Valar Dohaeris"

We had the names in beta, so idk if we were just too slow to hit ctrl+v on the character creator, or if it's as you theorized.
    Interesting thought.

For now I'm relatively pleased we were able to get the hyphenated versions:
    "Valar-Morghulis" and "Valar-Dohaeris"

Your name is very short and people seem to have snaffled all the short single names, it's quite possible your name actually was taken (sounds kind of Egyptian).

I just googled your name and unless all these accounts belong to you, your name could well also belong to a bunch of other people. Are you a male from Mexico (xfire account for nehefer) for example?

I started playing a few hours after 5 day early access began. Plus, this has also been happening to other people who were in the beta.

Ok well, either someone took it anyway because it's short, or you can't also use a character name same as account name.

Chances are that if you used the name for a character during beta or have used it in other MMO's then someone else has seen it, liked it and managed to snipe it. It sucks big time I know and it's truly a shame such people are incapable of creating their own unique character names but, if the name is in use, then I don't think customer support will be able to do much. Though if they do, that would be truly awesome! :o

What did you think beta names were permament? you need to move on from this, its not a healthy obsession.

    Yeah :]

I'm hopeful though, since I got that email with Support saying they understand my issue but need some info before moving forward.

My account name, character name, and beta name are all the same and I've had no issues with it. Not saying it couldn't be the issue, or that I couldn't be an outlier or something, but just to say it's not happening with everyone.

I've made up names before, and when you check a utility like the WoW armory, there's ten people with the same name divided by different realms. However, we don't have that division here. A name you make up, among millions of people, is not as unique as you think it is. It's not about sniping, it's about millions of people creating names for tens of millions of characters. It's not a hard stretch to think "Nehefer" would be taken by one of those ten million or so characters.

Are you seriously asking customer service to steal someone elses name so you can have it? You are pathetic.
  • caryhammub17_ESO
Yeah, my names I used in Beta are unavailable to me as well. Some one needs to go purge the characters from the system, or just do a complete append _x to their names to open the names up for use. Gotta figure, that is a lot of names that are being "stolen" by the system that could be used by the base.

Hilariously-- everyone can see who participated in beta because of the forum names bug.
    See my crummy username?
Yea... can't be changed--- it's their way of saying thanks for beta testing all those months

This would be an interesting turn of events if people's names were indeed bound up in the somehow-still-existent beta characters.

They wiped all beta names, so the names are legitimately taken by players. Man the entitlement special snowflakes are out in force.
