Character thrown into the ocean at random

freedompurveyor
Anytime my wife or myself play on her PC, while running around our characters will be randomly thrown into the sky and out into the ocean to die. Sometimes it just gets stuck in the air, in which case it screams a lot and then the game disconnects with a spam error. It is extremely frustrating and basically makes the game unplayable, because sometimes it will happen before we can even get the character back to where it was before it happens again.

This also happens in buildings and caves, in which case it simply throws the character into the wall and kills it instantly. At least in this case, you go to the nearest wayshrine, whereas ending up in the ocean usually puts the character on the other side of the map.

This does not happen on my PC, which has nearly the same specs but is running Windows 7, whereas hers is Windows XP. I have also seen others complain about this issue, but have never seen a solution. Is this a known issue, and is there a way to fix it?

Has anyone else experienced this issue? It's pretty debilitating and I can't imagine it's just us.

I have encountered the same bugs.
I have been thrown into the sea a total of 5 times and i have been thrown into the air a total of 3 times, one of them being 2 hours ago.
On one side, it's pretty funny. On the other side, randomly disconnecting and having a repair bill after is highly annoying.

Yeah I thought it was very amusing at first, but it gets really frustrating for both of us when we're trying to quest and she constantly gets thrown into oblivion.

Yesterday it was really bad, she got thrown into the ocean 3 times in a row without ever getting back to where we were questing, and we haven't logged in since, so I'd really love to hear any ideas anyone has.

Are you both using Windows XP?
  • freedompurveyor
My wife is using XP, but I am not. I was hoping I could find some people who have had this issue and find out if it is exclusive to XP or perhaps DirectX 9.

I'm pondering if it's DirectX 9. You can force the game to use OpenGL by changing the usersettings.txt file.

I'm actually using Windows 8.1 so it can't be an XP-related problem.
I have noticed it only happens if i am mounted and happen to run against a solid object...

Interesting, thanks. I'll give that a shot.

Fenbrae it does seem to usually happen on horseback, though we've had it happen in caves and places where horses aren't available. Are you on DirectX 11?

This is a feature. You are playing as an Argonian right? This is a race-based feature.

I had this happen a number of times on my Templar, on my Windows 8.1 PC.

Continues to happen to a lesser extent any time I try to jump over anything on my horse.

h9easmic_ESO, do you know by chance what version of DirectX you are running?

The game is trying to tell you both to take a shower. When I used to play FFXI there used to be a message that said don't neglect your real life responsibilities or health before you would enter the game. I thought it was funny that they'd have to put a reminder to tell you to basically continue your basic functions.

But all joking aside, I have experienced that bug a couple times. It mainly happened to me when I was going into some random crevice or corner, but as long as I stay on the regular path or things that don't look like my character will get stuck it hasn't happened.

Have you looked into a local spa for a nice scrub? :P

I've not experienced this issue yet.
To succeed you must do the things that you think you cannot.
  • freedompurveyor
I wish I could say we were playing so much we forget to shower, but the fact is this issue makes the game unplayable. Once it happens a few times, we get frustrated and quit.

I've fallen through the world 2x now. Logging out and back in helped, after several /reloadui /stuck attempts.

Is there anyone out there that has this issue and is also on DirectX 11?

Absolutely certain there's no alternate input device? A bluetooth mouse to the side that gets bumped and rolls or anything at all physically causing it outside of the software?
I ask because.. yeah no reason >_> <_<

There is no alternate input device or any other software that should interfere, however if there was I can't imagine it would cause this issue. The character flies straight up into the air hundreds of feet, and sails across the map all the way to the edge in a few seconds. Sometimes it hits a nearby hill or mountain before it gets high enough. From my perspective, it looks like my wife's character is teleporting.
  • freedompurveyor
Can anyone out there with this issue help me isolate what causes it? My current suspicion is DirectX 9 but I haven't been able to verify what version anyone else with this problem is using.

you might want to get her a new OS, afaik winXP doesn't get any security updates anymore, putting her and your account at risk if you continue using that. If the bug still occurs, at least she'll have an OS that gets service...
    just my 2 cents.

Are you using any add-ons? It just occured to me that something similar happened to a friend who had loaded their game up with add-ons. If you do have some, try to run the stock UI and see if that helps. If not then I'm out of ideas.

This happened to me last night in Cryodiil. I was on my horse and went to jump over a rock. I was thrown literally across the map and outside the playable area.

Once I started walking back to my side of the map I was stuck behind an invisible wall. /stuck is disabled on that map... (Figures) Oh and you can't open your map to warp to a way shrine. So used /help. Didn't work I had to run around for over 20 minutes outside the map to try and find a cliff high enough to throw my self off and die so I could get back to a playable area of the map.

Moral of this story. Becareful what you jump/climb over. You may break the game.

No addons, and I have terminated all non-vital processes and it still happens. I plan on upgrading her PC to Windows 7, but others have said that they have this issue on Windows 7 and Windows 8 so I'm not sure that will fix it.

The "falling through the ground" happened to me in the beta repeatedly, during beta sessions from the first one I was on to the very last. Win 7 Pro. This is not limited to XP.

Good job fixing those widely-reported bugs from the beta before launch, Zenimax. It's not like we pay for the time we spend playing this game OH WAIT WE DO SNAAAAP.

I'v seen this in games like Halo. And Other games. Its a collision error mixing with the physics. I do not believe upgrading your software will fix the issue. It's a random bug that will need to be fixed. I'v only had it happen to me once. But it appears to happen to players as they try to jump over things either on foot or on a horse. (happened to me while on a horse, as well as a friend who was on a horse.)

Right, but Direct X and other graphics-based software (and the GPUs themselves) do alot (or maybe all?) of the physics & collision. It is conceivable that upgrading drivers, software, etc. will help. I have no idea what the specs are for any of that stuff, what TES requires or expects, etc. but it wouldn't hurt to upgrade drivers etc. (and let's hope the solution is not to downgrade them).
