Why do you play a female character?

I'm female and I've really only played one male character in MMORPGs. That was in Ultima Online and I was stuck on pirates IRL and I made a character called Calico Jack Rackam to go along with my Anne Bonnie and Mary Reade characters. But all my ESO characters are female, and my main Varda (whom I've RP'ed in various gaming systems online and off) definitely has a lot of me in her - mostly her snarky attitude and fiery temper...oh, and if I could, I would totally cast explodey spells irl. lol

I'm also a Riot Grrrl Feminist and I kinda think that there's plenty of male heroes out there in TV, movies, and video games. So I prefer playing kick ass heroines to make sure the gaming world knows that when I say I "fight like a girl" it means, you're going to get your ass handed to you. lol

I think tbh too, I just don't like male models in video games. The movement is always weird and - while I'm poly/pan; I just favor the female form and aesthetics over male.

This is Varda. I actually post this pic to FB now and again and people think it's a photo of me. I'll admit it...I kinda have the same resting b-face. :p

Many female characters in game with the most feminine outfits and names, all the details with lipstick, personality, etc. are played by guys. My wife asked me why do so many guys play females? I play a male character. I didn't really know why. I said in jest, maybe they had a sister and didn't get to participate in the doll dress up stuff when they were growing up?

I know some say "because I like how they look", but many she's encountered take it to another level and then she finds out on discord it's a guy and she's really surprised.

    In all seriousness:
    1) Why do you play a female instead of a male?
    2) If you're a female do you play male characters? Or is this a 1 sided sort of thing?

I'm a male, play half and half, main toon being male. My sole reason for choosing man or woman is "RP", even though I don't RP. I just like my characters to have background stories, have a look that fit their role, and for both male and female, be pleasant to look at, except my main who I made looking a bit like me.

My NB boy look sleazy AF(he's also my banker character, only one with MM and full personal bag), my khajiit girl look like a seductive thief, my warden tank Altmer looks like she lives in the woods seeking g enlightenment about the toughness of nature... You get the idea. My altmer male Templar looks PROPER too. Very kingly.

I do make them all very good looking to my eyes though. Let's say, Hollywood worthy, or something like that. Don't want to spend 4h a day looking at some ugly ess character.

As a final comment, it's disgusting how many comments I get about looks when I play my girls, and only one of them has a (not that much) revealing outfit (bosmer medium lvl 2 "sports bra", and glass medium pants that makes her butt look nice). And then people wonder why nerdy gamer men are so poorly viewed socially.

    There’s two choices. Why not?

I'm male and I have both male and female characters. The main reason that in RPG female characters are better looking and have better looking armor and clothing.

I also have background stories on all my characters. The females often have stronger personalities and powers and they can have darker and sinister ones then the male stories. Both male and females have their strengths and weaknesses so they need each other.

I’m nonbinary, and tend to play whatever (though I have a preference for playing male characters).

I’ve currently got 3 girl characters, 2 boys, and one nonbinary character (with a ‘male’ character model). I prefer to play my male characters more though, partly because I’d usually rather be mistaken for a boy than for a girl.

My characters usually look the way they do for RP reasons and I don’t often make characters I find personally attractive, so aesthetics don’t really come into it.

I don't know why, but i don't want to associate myself with my characters in fantasy/space games. It breaks immersion.
So if character is pre-made like Geralt or GTA5 chars etc, i'm totally comfortable playing those males cause it all feels like interactive movie.

But in TES, DA or even Mass Effect series, where your imagination has huge impact on immersion, i can't play males, i start interpolating IRL experience with game and of course game story feels like nonsense in comparison.

So females is my way in games with character creation. I have 3 male toons in ESO, they are all leveled and geared but after i completed and tested their builds i don't use them for anything then crafting, i simply don't want to play them, game feels boring.

I am male and i use 3-view at my char, so i have to watch my char from back.. i prefer to look at a female from back !

I know at least 2 female playing male char.

I am male and play female characters, simply because I love women :)

Besides most outfits/dresses/costumes etc fit all women characters and I surely wanna use those on all my characters when I feel like it, however on male characters some costumes/outfits look plain disgusting (dresses on males? no way...).

Do not get me wrong, if some guy wanna wear dress go for it cause idc, but it doesn't mean I gotta do it 2 just to be politically correct and not considered intolerant.

I'm a male and play both. It's fun to play a different gender now and then.

I'm human and my main is a male Khajiit. Not sure what that says about me.

I also play The Witcher and Tomb Raider.

I'm a guy, and my main is always an idealized version of myself.

But I do have a few female toons (4 out of 10, to be exact). When I create a character, I ALWAYS start with an RP concept first. All of the other details fit into that overall pattern, including gender.

For example, I'm a huge fan of the Moth Priests and one of my toons is built around that idea. I also liked the precogs from Minority Report, so I got my toon as visually close to Agatha as possible.

So, for me, I have to say gender is just one small detail that has to fit into my character concept. I just go with what makes sense.

The running animation for male characters is so fugly i agree. Whereas the animations for walking, running, and sprinting are all nice and fluid for females.

I play both. Story-wise, my characters are all part of the same group/guild. For every character I make, I decide on a backstory/personality and all that stuff. Just so happens that out of all the games I've done this for, my absolute favorite character is my Bosmer stam sorc. I really like her character and have the most fun playing her.

I'm female and play mostly male characters. I'd guess that the reverse is often for the same reasons I play male - I'd rather look at a man's pert butt than a woman's! I never play as 'me' - my characters are always 'they' with their own personalities and tastes.

When I make mods, those are also usually aimed at male. ESO is different in that I have a couple of females in the mix, mostly for variety.

She is more role-fitting than male in my case. I speak about my main. She is an altmer healer, priestess of Auri-El.

I'm male and playing only males because I consider them my avatars and hate all the confusion virtual "trapping" brings. Also I have no habit of polishing my spear on my own characters and there're better/more important things to look at other than their butt, especially when switching to 3rd person.

I'm a woman, I have 14 characters but only 2 mains that I play each day and both are female. Out of the other 12 there were 4 male characters but I changed 3 to female. So my only male character left now is an Orc and he's staying male. I think he's adorable and one day he'll be played as a main. So the conclusion I came to is that male characters seem bland to me - except for those that have something different about them and pointy ears aren't quite enough to make me want to keep them male!

    Ohhhh I like that question.

And your answer to the question is? If you don't mind me asking.

I have seven characters, both males and females, my main is male but I don't really identify with him same as I don't identify with the female alts.

I'm female, and I mostly play female characters-- at least as a start. Then, after I've explored the female stories in total, I'll go back and do the same for male toons/characters. Especially for more involved stories like Mass Effect, SWTOR's class stories, Dragon Age, etc. If the central toon/character is fully voiced, I'm a lot more likely to roll males just so I can hear the voice acting :D

In GW2, I rolled both freely because certain actors appealed to me. Plus, there was incentive to check out at least the beginning of each race's stories each week because you'd get free lootbox keys at level 10. So I heard all the voices. The ones I really enjoyed, I stuck with and played the full main story. SWTOR had something similar-- your first toon of each class on each server reaching the Fleet got free cash currency. I rolled everything and heard all the starting stories from every angle.

Here, it's all female so far. But a lot of that is because the story of the vestige is the same. The toons aren't voiced and the text lines are the same regardless of gender and mostly race. Plus it takes forever to level them. I haven't been around long enough to want to roll a male yet or to get to a point where I'd play with him.

Pretty much just like the astetic of making a female character and feel like i put more effort into making the females than males ^ they seem to look better imo and each one of my chars have different outfits/personality's and they just look awesome i have 1 male char but all the rest are female.
Doesn't really matter so long as you enjoy what you're playing as (i'm female irl)
