Why is everyone so obsessed with spellcrafting and why does everyone anticipate it?

Why does everyone want this all the time? I don't get it, you barely have smooth working combat as it is lol.

Also, why is everyone expecting it so much? There's like nothing specifically pointing towards spellcrafting at all, other than some random tablet with a very likely reused asset from 2014.

Not that I don't like the idea of it, it sounds fantastic. I just don't think it should be now and I don't think it will.

I think ppl have this image of morrowind spell crafting, we all in known that won't happen.

I certainly don't expect Morrowind or Oblivion level of spellcrafting, nor would I want something like that in an MMO.

But a Spellcrafting system that has a number of base spells that you collect around the world, and can choose from several different options of "morphed" versions of it through the crafting system, would be pretty cool.

If it were to happen, people crying for an aoe taunt might find out why they don't need (or even want) one.

Other than that, I see no upside to skill crafting.

We NEED something that ups the gameplay. All the skill lines and classes feel boring after 5 years. This game needs additional mechanics when it comes to skills and combat, it really does. It's my main gripe with the game.

And no, just new skill lines won't fix combat.
If they actually addressed and fixed all bugs with current skill lines and skills and balanced better I would be down for spell crafting but tbh spell crafting will just add more calculations and reduce game performance further.

Are you familiar with the big O notation? In which part of your imaginary spell crafting system would be the resource hog?

I do not think spell crafting would increase resource usage by a meaningful margin, because I cannot imagine how it would use loops etc. Yes, AoE attacks requires loops to check if you're in one, but it does not increase the resource usage, because we have AoE already.

IMO spell crafting is not that exciting. I think it will be as exciting as poison crafting, and that there will be one mathematically best (in terms of cost-efficiency) custom spell. Yay.

Because with spellcrafting, I can charm merchants into letting me buy enchanted gear for a song, cast 100% chameleon, and make training spells to level up magicka quick!

Oh, wait. That was TES IV Oblivion.

    (I'm not hopeful, just nostalgic.)

Said it since the first topic I seen way back when. If we ever get spell crafting, it's going to be NOT what people have their expectations for.

The reason why everyone is obsessed and/or expecting it is because a few years ago they actually talked about it and showed off what they had made for it already and it looked like an interesting concept and would be fun and nostalgic for players who played Elder Scrolls games before Skyrim.

I don't feel very strongly about it, since I barely used spellcrafting in Oblivion. I am sceptical, however, that they would be able to preserve balance with a spellcrafting system, and since balance seems to be all-important to the devs, I expect introducing spellcrafting would probably create more problems than we need.

I'm not. I actually PRAY that it NEVER EVER happens.

If they can't fix a server's performance, how on earth are they expected to create a spell-crafting system that is effective, bug-free and integrates seamlessly with current systems and has little to no effect on balance?

    Exactly...

what's the point of introducing something new if it's going to have "little to no effect on balance"?

I assume it's to make things more interesting?

Certainly shouldn't be to make things even more unbalanced than they already are...

Except most of the people in the video left ESO a long time ago. (And isn't Quake just a huge marketing ploy?)

If it has no effect on current balance it'll mean it's mostly useless and nobody uses it after the novelty is gone.

Well we have news from the stream yesterday:

Spellcrafting is still something they consider but it won't be part of the game in the near future (Rich Lambert).

With all the issues everyone seems to have with balance-- like 3/4 of this forum-- that was the first thing that popped into my head. How would you account for all the random fragments when the existing skill system seems to have issues? *shrug*

I'd probably have fun with it if it was implemented, but that fun would probably be short-lived before the nerfing crew got to it.
