Why is everyone so obsessed with spellcrafting and why does everyone anticipate it?

Why does everyone want this all the time? I don't get it, you barely have smooth working combat as it is lol.

Also, why is everyone expecting it so much? There's like nothing specifically pointing towards spellcrafting at all, other than some random tablet with a very likely reused asset from 2014.

Not that I don't like the idea of it, it sounds fantastic. I just don't think it should be now and I don't think it will.

I'm not. I actually PRAY that it NEVER EVER happens.

If they can't fix a server's performance, how on earth are they expected to create a spell-crafting system that is effective, bug-free and integrates seamlessly with current systems and has little to no effect on balance?

    Exactly...

what's the point of introducing something new if it's going to have "little to no effect on balance"?

I like more options, not less. I'll never understand why people prefer the devs spoon-feed them cookie-cutter classes instead of a real system that let's them experiment and build their own character.

There already are tons of options. Just don't listen to streamers, youtubers and don't Google builds. Make your own with whatever you like.

My guild just so happens to have a guy using 0 cookie cutter/meta things and essentials and does more DPS than these streamers. -_-

I honestly don't care too much about balance, because there will always be imbalance. I mean, obviously I think that everything should still be tested and tweaked as needed to prevent things from being too OP, but there always seems to be this immensely strong desire from players, of wanting a perfectly balanced game (or nearly so), and it really just feels unrealistic. Not worth keeping the game back from adding new things.

Balance is nice, but using that to keep the game from being able to add new interesting systems is where I draw the line on where it's priority should be. I'm actually more interested in the possible utility skills that could come from such a system, or how it could help fill out non-bis builds like bow/bow builds, Cyromancer builds, and things like that, rather than what it will do to the meta-builds. How it will affect the meta is actually the thing about it that I'm least interested in.

As for why people think it's coming now? Well, I'll be honest, it's probably a lot down to wanting to see things we want to see. As the announcement time comes closer, and analyzing the hints more and more, I'm becoming more and more doubtful of it showing up. We make the hints look like the hints we want them to be for things, rather than the harsh truth that it's probably for something else.

    I hope it never comes.

    - First of all for PvP they cannot balance it. Poisons already wreck the game sometimes and this will be worse.

    - Stamina characters also want spell crafting because in ESO apparently Stamina is another form of magic (lore breaking imho because it never was in any previous TES game. Hence it was called "Fatique" prior to Obivion:
"The green Fatigue bar on the HUD display indicates your character's rested status. A character's fatigue indicator will decrease when they perform exercises such as running, jumping, or attacking, indicating roughly how tired they are."
I don't like stamina morphs of spells in general. Weapon skill line has enough (if not only except restro/destro staff) stamina morphs.
What is in lore is bounded weapons. But do they add those? Nope. Not even one magicka morph for the bow skill line

    - It will add so much more particle effects and fluff to the game and cyrodill lag will be worse (and hence the trials like during this event)

Do i like it? Yes, i single player TES games. Not for an online game which has PvP in it, unless disabled for PvP i could live with it.

"I am a nightblade. Blending the disciplines of the stealthy agent and subtle wizard, I move unseen and undetected, foil locks and traps, and teleport to safety when threatened, or strike like a viper from ambush. The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."

I fail to see how giving more depth to the build system would affect the game negatively regardings balance more than it already is. Take a look at how many sets there is, take a look at the CP system and all its permutations, what part of it does not scream DEPTH. Spellcrafting would be one of such systems, it was planned and in my opinion finished (put away to be used in a near future just like the warden class).

Like with all things we will get over it but with a great system to develop skills to cover for deficiencies and upgrades in builds/roles/classes. The balance you are waiting for will never come because it will never exist in this game. Balance = success/fail being defined exclusively by player skill, such as chess, sports (unless you want to argue genetics/gender), etc. Not the case in ESO, skill is mere a part of the whole. In any case, "ESO is not ready" is a 5 year old argument, when do you expect it to be ready, in 10 years? 20 years?

Spellcrafting will come, I have no doubts they will milk the *** out of it. And I don't trust ZOS word of "it's out of the table" because such was with the subscription model and other things. Yes, I do have faith in the recycling of justice system to bestow upon us its full glory. Don't underestimate their will/lack of creativity to recycle stuff in game and sell it as brand new.

Every other Elder Scrolls game has included one or more game-breaking glitch that allowed me to turn my character into an invincible all-powerful god-king. This isn't currently possible in ESO; it MIGHT be possible in ESO with spellcrafting. Ergo, I want spellcrafting.

As to PvP balance, well, if I cared one whit about PvP then I suppose I'd take a different stance; as it is, god-king me, ESO!

Skyrim did not have spellcrafting. I usually take an even keel about these things, but I was incensed by its removal.

Anyway, as for ESO, I'm not here for the combat and generally ignore the meta anyway. I'm here for the world, to play a role within the world, and my main character is a scholarly mage and spellwright. I want to spend hours and hours plumbing the depths of a spellcrafting system, experimenting with different combinations and tailoring spells to my need--even if they aren't the most practical spells for most people.

That said, I have no expectation of spellcrafting ever coming to ESO. There are a lot of people who are quick to look at any given datamined tidbit and hold it up as proof positive that we're really getting spellcrafting this time, but I'll need something a little more substantial than a re-used asset or a vague filename to convince me.

C'mon, ZOS, prove me wrong. ;D

We NEED something that ups the gameplay. All the skill lines and classes feel boring after 5 years. This game needs additional mechanics when it comes to skills and combat, it really does. It's my main gripe with the game.

And no, just new skill lines won't fix combat.

If they actually addressed and fixed all bugs with current skill lines and skills and balanced better I would be down for spell crafting but tbh spell crafting will just add more calculations and reduce game performance further.

I don't want it unless they take the time to really do it right. Nose to toes. The whole thing. No "average" and no "good enough". Something that is thoughtful, considered, balanced, and finished. Not bolted on the side with an asterisk "to be completed later" over it.

    So, I guess I don't want it.

Everyone expects it because it is the last system that we know about, and have seen, and we know it is coming. Eventually.

They’ve taken plenty of time to do it right, 5 years of refining since the concept was shown.

I’m all for adding Spellcrafting. Dozens if not hundreds of new spells to mix up the meta. And with a scale like that I highly doubt anyone will find “the best” combinations immediately. There will be a lot of different builds and ideas that are viable, and new spells will serve to fill the gaps in current builds that don’t quite work out (like an ice based spammable with Ysgramor for example).

They don’t even have to bring all the spells at once. Just add the framework and introduce a few with each update.

Because we miss it from the older Elder Scrolls titles and it would be awesome to make your own spells. It would also be in line with the games concept of flexible roles and builds and so it could add a meaningful dimension to this, provided it is done properly.

That's not really how programming/math work in relation to performance. If there is a concern with introducing new mechanics it would be the risk of introducing gamebreaking bugs. But that is always a risk. And you don't discover new land without losing sight of the shore...

Imagine not understanding that simply typing your name into a guild roster to reduce calculations and that improving performance. Now imagine your post in regards to how many abilities and calculations go off in regards to cp, skills, and etc in end game trials and pvp. Now imagine that this games performance has regressed over the course of 5 years.

True free form no class systems usually end up with less build diversity than we have. The secret world is a great example for this. 12 different DPS builds! Ohh wait they are basically all the same rotation <Build X6/7 - Consume on Eleforce - repeat> with every DPS you ever make, but at least they have different ranges/animations!

Having said that a system to help certain classes fill minor gaps would be appreciated. I don't want them to do it *better* than the main class, but have the option.

Silver leash change is a great example of this. DK are still king of Chains, but now at least other classes have the ability to do so.

I can bet if Spellcrafting was to be released, @Nyladreas you would give it a shot. Forget about the balancing, forget about the performance, and all that BS my deeps cut you good just for a moment and consider how much fun it would be. I suppose the Charm (pun intended) could wear off, but you might find some useful spells and be like yeah I could of used Muffle to get past these guards.

More than likely, ZOS will have to impliment damage caps to have something like Spell Crafting. Not a bad change really, but it will be a fundamental shift in game mechanics.
