How costly is house decorating in ESO?

I haven't dive into the house decoration of ESO yet, since they are rather "useless" gameplay wise and can cost a fortune

However, since I haven't get into this deep, I don't know how costly it really is

Will I be able to get a decent looking house without the use of real money? Or if I am to use crowns how much can it improve the look?

etc etc

Basically please throw in your experience about house decorating in eso, much appreciated :)

I decorated my house just by using craftable stuff so it was free just needs time/commitment and materials for it =)

If you want to go the fast route you can always use the crown store tho' which can become expensive if you haven't stocked up on crowns.

Also farming for some furniture is a pain in the ass^^

Totally possible without crowns. However, a good looking house already cost roughly 100k and furnishing them is usually more expensive than the house itself. I recently bought a medium house that cost a bit over 300k and furnishing it was extra 1,2 million. (though I did buy some of the most expencive trophies in game for it). Also helps a lot if you have been questing and collecting achievements as some of the good stuff are locked behind achievements.
I have never used crowns for housing myself but I think you could find some good looking items from those packs and they would certainly help with furnishing. There are also very few flowers availiable without using crowns.

I've spent millions of gold on housing, and none of my own crowns (I bought a furniture pack from someone because I wanted the items). But you can easily get by not using real money/crowns. Tho it is all up to what kind of furniture style you're going for. Khajiit and nord are cheaper styles here on PC EU, and some styles fall into the more expensive bin. Choose your house wisely ^^

Hmm that depends on the individual. My advice is to make a plan or just impulse buy and put things in it as you find things you like.

For me, I spent probably 5 million gold on my guild house, but there's was inflation to account for as I started on day 1. Like I spent 500k on a test dummy. Also I have all test dummies in game. The most notable achievement items in game on display minus a few. Also got very full collection of panting and very fine museum pieces aka statues. I spent 1200 crowns of my own cause I wanted 2 paints and a block of shinning cheese. I got 3000 crowns donated which I used mostly the kitchen... don't ask...

Next prized creation was my fishing house spent like 200k? Maybe It was mostly on these blue crystals. I got fish and sea items donated to my cause of most part. I have this friend who sent me stuff as he got his master angler title. His junk my treasure.

I spent a year collecting items for my haunted forest dream. A have probably ever luxury item ever to cross with dark theme. Bought some gold to crowns things too. I probably spent around 2 million gold.

I made a personal house... I spent maybe 2k gold as I threw a lot of my junk items I have collected in there or people gifted me.

I have a zen garden spent so fair like 20k, but this one is mostly a place to reflect on my experiences.

My advice is take it one step at a time. Don't rush yourself and let yourself take the cost overtime. It's a good creative release and I think it lets you explore aspects of yourself.

I've spent at least 5 million gold on it, probably more.

Furniture is pretty cheap now, especially if you don't use DLC furnishings. If you only use base game furniture, you can decorate a manor with like 100-200k. If you use stuff from the DLC (which has much higher texture resolution), you'll be spending more (probably like a million to decorate a manor).

Small and medium houses cost almost nothing to decorate.

In most cases (and especially in the case of the small to large, rather than Notable, sized houses), you can definitely get a (very) decent-looking house without spending any/much real money.

However, it will take a lot of gold...

The reason I say "in most cases", not all, is because the Alinor houses have very distinct architecture and woodwork and so on...

So, I think it is harder to decorate them to a really high standard without resorting to a few Crown Store purchases (like for Alinor paintings, for example).

Even then, the vast majority of Alinor items can be bought and/or crafted, in-game, though.

Paintings and maybe some flowers/plants are probably the main thing you might end up buying with real money (or saved-up Crowns), in general.

Or, for the biggest (Notable) properties, you might want to buy some large statues and fountains and stuff...

Or, you might get sick of the rugs/carpets available in-game, for example and buy a few Crown Store-only ones, for a couple of properties.

I also tend to buy fires for the hearths via the Crown Store; as they tend to cost quite a lot from the guild trader.

What you need to do, is look through the Crown Store page, in the housing editor and when you find something you like, then you can go to the ESO Fashion site to see whether it's also available in-game, or not.

I've decorated 20+ homes, purchased and spent over 100K crowns, and 50 million'ish gold, mostly on either overpriced player crafted furnishings or achievement-gated furnishings.

It isn't hard to make nice house without single crown spent, though you can find some small items useful or nice (and that's easy to buy from other players). But be ready to spend a lot of gold, especially for big houses.

In my Strident Springs Demesne I have 14 crown items: 6 below 40 crowns, 5 between 80 and 100 (three can be replaced now with not crown items - same or close), one cost 130 and was placed just because I had it (from pack another player sent me). Most expensive items cost 370 and 800 (music box, was gifted). So, I spent 945 + 930 was gifted. ~1900 in total.
But really important things for what I wanted to see there - 285 crowns (books, cheapest imperial well and box of fruit).

Erstwhile Sanctuary costed me much more (even if not count it's own price): 5355 crowns (with 12 items below 100) + 5 items from packs that aren'r sold separately (so I can't count price. Mostly books) + 3500 was gifted. Books can be easily replaced, so let's say it is ~9000. Two most expensive items are Sithis statue (3500) and provisioning station (2700), cheapest are spoon and forks (5 crowns) and broom (15).
Most important for look: 960 (680 from them for two dark brotherhood columns), important for use +2700 (for station - to have all stations).

I will not count gold. I'm afraid to see that numbers! (and it will take a lot of time)
    Several millions, I believe.

Things that can cost you a lot of crowns: imperial items (but base furniture can be replaced with breton - same models, another color), statues, mundus stones.

Oh, and one more important thing about how much it will cost.
For big houses you will need ESO+.
Though you can collect all items and try finish house during free ESO+ event, when it will come...

For small houses it's not so problematic, but for big even doubled limit is not enough.

It will be costly to buy, and even more costly to craft by oneself (blueprints for nice items are rare and expensive).
However using Crowns is not a must, most items (even nice ones) can be purchased with gold.

I am decorating Grand Psijic Villa, the only house I have. I'm over 350 objects and it's cost me about half a million in gold to date.

100k went straight to the Final Threat, Molag Bal's statue. 100k went for another three statues. Oh and 90k for the skeleton target dummy.

Now I'm collecting busts from veteran dungeons.

I've noticed a lot of things you can find cheaper at home furnishers around Tamriel, while the same stuff is being sold at higher prices at guild traders.

I spent a lot on furnishing the Daggerfall overlook....

and figured out something that palatial doesn't fit my character, so I'm spending way too much furnishing something much smaller.

As other people have said it really depends on what you want to do.

The main reason I've spent crowns on my house is because I picked one with a lot of outside space and I wanted to add lots of flowers to it, and a lot of flowers are only available through the crown store. But then a lot of them are relatively cheap (often under 50 crowns) and I was willing to spend some crowns on housing so I'm ok with that. There are also ones you can buy from NPCs so it is possible to decorate outside spaces without spending real money, but as people have said it depends on the style you're going for.

Don't forget to check out the achievement furnishers in each map too. There's a lot of really cool achievement furnishings which can help you fill up and personalise your house. They can be expensive (but only in gold, not crowns) and some are difficult or time consuming to get, but then you might have already done the achievements which unlock them.

I haven't kept count of how much gold I have spent on housing but most of it was for the dwelling and plants. For furnishings I crafted most myself or picked them up from questing or other content. For my Christmas house I did buy some items from the Crown Store since I have them sitting around from my ESO+ subscription.

Most of my houses and apartments are empty except for storage boxes and to use as free teleport hubs. Of those I am decorating none are near being finished. This is one of those things I do when dailies get boring and I need something to do while waiting for the group finder to pop. Other than the free house from last year my two largest are the Twin Arches and Autumn's - Gate as I like courtyards. Each is well under 100K gold and to me are a good deal for what you get to work with. I'm also working on the Grand Psijic Villa but not sure if it will ever look complete with its large size and 700 item limit. While I understand some folks like the large stuff after my experience with the Villa I think I will stick to the small and medium size houses as to me they feel more finished within their item limits.

You can spend a lot but is not mandatory.

For me it is free. I craft my own furniture with plans I find for free with resources I find for free.

100% possible without crowns. there are some crown only furnishings, like books stacks or some of the flowers or occasional furnishing pack items and the like that I wish weren't crown exclusive, since making your own book stacks with achievement books takes up a LOT of furnishing slots for example, but.. most of the furniture is either craftable, basic vendor based or achievement vendor based. vast majority of houses can be bought with gold (some require specific achievements though)

I was very lazy this last house and used crowns. About 8k crowns into it after the 4k to buy. Cash is easier than gold for me. It will depend on what furnishing. Using Alinor stuff? Go crowns. Most others hold is a safe bet

There are a number of furnishings that you can only buy with crowns, and not make or buy with gold from merchants.Buying for crowns includes buying furnished homes for crowns, so some people will sell off the furnishings they replace, in the guild traders.

Books, firelogs, and a number of the nicer Redguard pieces can't be self-made, and must be bought for crowns.

Making your own also requires significant quantities of the tempering mats, (and the plans can be really expensive, too). Refining can be a major grind, and if you're also trying to craft your own equipment, the two sinks will compete.
