What is the best method to stop cheaters?

Edit : this is for players using cheat engine, macros, bots...

None because there’s more problems in this game than cheating. How about fixing the thousands of bugs that cause cheating.

Not sure it's bugs but a bypass to their detection system, if zos even has one.

I constantly see people running scripted programs to farm dolmens and zombies in serk to get Dawn Breaker.

Then after reporting them I see them running about playing the game and they are still playing to this day.

I don't think stopping these things are on the short list for zos. Bots and cheats that buy multiple accounts are part of those supposedly 10 million accounts.

So the evil bugs of darkness makes innocent Tamriel adventurers cheat? The poor things...

As for the poll question, if someone cheats fully aware of what they are doing, they should be permabanned. Everyone knows the basics of the TOS and there are no excuses to such actions.

Totally agree with @Latios. If you cheat and did it knowingly, permanent ban.

When you cheat you did nothing. Everything you did in game was through cheating. What is the point in even playing a game if you are gonna go that route?

I think it's a far greater punishment if you delete someone's progress, including bank contents, currency, collectibles as well as achievements and craft bag entirely altogether.

It's more of a *** off having access to the game still and being forced to witness all your stuff irreversibly gone.

I was a GM on a quite populated private UO server a loooong time ago. And this was the number 1 reason for offenders to leave the game. Strangely, permanent bans would be less effective. We'd always mark their account and IP as well of course to make sure the occasional 2nd offense would be indeed a permanent ban, with IP ban included.

You have several layers of perceived cheating though.

You have unintended systems handling math wrong, being additive vs multiplicitive. Both examples in history.

You have temporary buffs and supposed singular choice buffs malfunctiong and giving perm buffs and multiple single buffs.

You have gear sets performing at levels multiple times higher than designed.

You have terrain glitches that allow for negation of single target attacks.

You have skill glitches, especially with fast moving gap closers that allow for unoccupied entry.

You have so many individual glitches or whatever you want to call them it basically requires you to question many things we see.

On top of those and many more you have legit memory hacking and bot running that is irrefutably cheating, but gets chalked up to one of the hindred glitches.

The best way to handle cheaters is to take the ability to cheat away. The pinishment for the player is up to the company, but banning 1 dude doesnt make anything better, may make a few people feel good, but thats it. Removing that glitch or bug or system affects all non exploiting characters with a net positive result.

I mean it is a vague term when applied to eso. What I consider outright cheating like team green and team purple, may be to Zos and the community at large and the guilds selling empy just part of the game. So my main concern really is the random load screens and the constant freezes during combat. Also, the servers have be cheating most of us for the longest time.

I think you need to have examples for your poll.

Zos does need to do something. It is poor and short sighted management of the game to not punish cheaters and exploiters. Those that seek exploits and use them for personal gain are clearly offenders that are significantly more likely to do it again and it is better for the game to remove them forever. There is no legitimate excuse.

Some happen upon something and there may be some innocent action that might not have been obvious to the player and that they did not repeat the action could be worthy of a short term ban.

So the poll does not have an appropriate answer since it treats everyone the same and disregards what actually occurred.

You have to judge on a case-by-case basis.

Come to console, they live for 1 month+ in most cases before being moderated out of the game. It is heartbreaking to see the same folks for days, weeks, months parked in front of nodes or trash mobs 30 bots at a time, but it's commonplace on console. (Though I haven't seen as much of late, admittedly - but I suspect this is because Chinese Gold sellers aren't making enough real financial gains to justify it anymore.)

I think ZOS gave up on making a game and instead have an entertainment product that exists to be monetized to the greatest degree possible.

I think their core audience probably doesn't read the forums, doesn't know exactly what a bot is, has no idea what memory hacking is and are completely oblivious to all the things that ruin ESO for gaming enthusiasts.

If this audience doesn't care and cheat mitigation doesn't make them money, ZOS doesn't care. In fact, it is costly at a customer service level to ban players, so they'd probably prefer not to do that if they can avoid it.

I also think ZOS has been ghosting gamers for the past couple of years with the idea that we can accept ESO for what it is or bye felicia.

That's because there's no trust in the system. To have trust in the system, ZOS would have to have mitigations and some degree of transparency.

Good players in every game are accused of cheating, but I am certain it happens much less often in games that show they take cheating seriously by banning thousands each wave.

What I consider cheating, is to not be generouse.

If you are truly generouse, then you share. There nothing wrong with sharing. lol

Besides, some of my highest value items in-game have been obtained through trade. Who are we to say that's wrong?

Bots are a different matter. There is no real good way to perma ban them with the rules ZOS has. Accounts are too cheap to buy. so it doesnt rly matter if you perma ban them.
