Whats the point of Events anymore?

I'm trying to figure out the point of events anymore and getting a little frustrated. First event i'm talking of was the gifting event to get the White Gryphon pet and now they are showing it will be in January crown store case the same month we are suppose to get it. That's a big slap to the face. The reason a lot of people participated was to get an "Exclusive" pet, to have something unique that others might not have. But instead it was just a marketing ploy to get people to buy crowns right before the new years to make your numbers look good before EOY... or at least that's what it feels like now. Also some people spent more then 1000 crowns for the event because it was hard to find unique items for exactly 500 a piece so I hope the crown store will not have it for 1000 or less. I feel really cheated here.

NOW even worse, I see that you are going to allow people to buy the event tickets for the indrik mount in the crown store at the end of Q1.... so why everyone else had to put in all the grinding and work to earn their mount and berry's everyone else can just buy it. This makes the mount no longer feel special to me in any way. I loved that I got it, and I earned it, it felt like a special mount because of this and it was something I was able to show off the work I put in. Now it just feels like a waste of my time. I don't even know how to extend my frustration with this. You took something special from the players that work hard for something then just give it away to anyone that wasn't willing.

Might as well start adding all the Monster sets to the crown store next or how about solo arena gear....oh wait maybe I shouldn't give you any ideas.

So disappointed...

Your final paragraph (monster sets, vma weapons) would be 'pay to win'. The mount, vanity items, non combat pets etc, are not.

Either way, you got yours free, right? I got mine, minimal effort, zero impact on my wallet. If its in the store, it costs real money... That's still a bargain in my mind, thus win!

True, I was being over dramatic about adding weapons and armor sets to crown store. I was more of just making the point of its something you put a lot of work into just to then make it easier for everyone else down the road. It makes the prize you get for achieving something less of a achievement if everyone else can just buy it.

It seems that a mount that a lot of people cal ugly becomes VITAL. You don't like the way it comes - berries, feathers? Pass by. You can still play without it. It is not a P2W, relax.

@JadonSky, I get that, and I understand your sentiment. But it only invalidates you personal achievement if you make it so. You could flip this and it means you can look down on the buyers from superiority for putting in the effort ... For me tho, yeah, it's a p!ss take, but I have glass, welkynaar, indrik mount, many other motifs, never paid a penny. What would I do in game otherwise if I bought all the grinds?

Are you proud of your achievements in video games? Relative to other things you do with your life, how important would you say video game achievements are by comparison?

Each to their own in terms of values, but personally I find it odd to attach much importance to something like video game achievements. I also don't care about competition or 'showing up' someone else. Just not my thing. I don't care if someone else can get something I have. It matters not to me, especially when the stuff is virtual.

The issues related to predatory monetization and marketing, however, is entirely something else. But proper discussions about that would go too far into politics, which isn't allowed to be talked about here as I recall.

I'm not comparing a game to my personal life. But when it comes to achievements that kinda what MMO's are all about. Getting name titles, items, trophies for completing task and events. So yeah I would say i'm proud of the achievements I get in ESO. Now do those rate higher then my personal life achievements and the answer is no for me. But some people video games are their lives especially for streamers.

My point is why make an event to earn something when it will just be available for easy grabs later. Kinda makes the whole thing pointless in a video game world.

With the gryphon thing, I couldn't help but see it as a surreptitious way of making me buy the damn thing. I would've paid 1000 crowns on items for others, just to get it. In a round about way actually buying it @1k crowns. What is it selling for now?

ZOS only cares about $$$. They are hoping people see others with the indrick mount and the white gryphon and will open their crown store and just pay up for it. This game does not promote prestige or player satisfaction from completing difficult content. If they could they would sell every last thing in this game on the crown store, even monster/arena sets.

it's about keeping people engaged in a way so the company can make money. that's just the reality.

and to be fair video game "prestige" or "achievements" aren't even really that. Because they only exist in game. once the game shuts off, that prestige and achievement doesn't even exist.

people want to be "better" than others. Which isn't even a thing. It's a false sense of elitism. people that get the indrik by playing the events are in no way better than the people that will buy the tickets. It just means you got it differently. And that's it. people needa chill about needing to be above others in some way, that's what kills video game communities.

but if we apply some CBT techniques, you don't have to let it bother you because you control your emotions. so if you want this to bother you, then it will. but you actually don't have to let it bother you at all. You're choosing to let it bother you instead of just radically accepting things as they are and enjoying the mount you'll get it.

I think part of the problem is that people think everyone who plays a game should have to all play the same way. Which creates A LOT of toxicity. There seems to be no room for different methods otherwise things are "cheapened". I don't want the indriks anymore tbh, but if i had been able to do the events to get one, i would not care at all if someone buys tickets to get it, because how does that affect me? it doesn't at all. unless i let it affect me. if i earned something, i earned it. if someone gets it another way, that in no way takes away from how i got it. just means they did it another way? and why is that a problem?

This is what happens when we form expectations of others. Expecting everyone to play an MMO the same way, or earn rewards the same way is just not a realistic expectation. and one could argue, not a fair one either.

basically, the bottom line is, so what? so you played for tickets, and others will buy them. So. what?

Interesting. Those things are not what I consider this game to be about and I am probably not unique in this sentiment. It sounds like you are more of a gamer than a role-player? Folks who focus on role-play and storytelling like me don't really care much about titles, trophies, contests, or any of that so much. But I totally get how gamer types would be put off by what they perceive as a "cheapening" of rewards.

With the perspective you take on the purpose of game, I can see this being a bother to you. On the flip side, it might help to consider it from a different angle or two. In particular, YOU still know you earned it through blood, sweat, and tears. Someone else going the easy route doesn't negate your own talent and effort, right? Plus, keep in mind that while it may look like easy grabs, many who live on limited means really can't afford (or shouldn't afford) buying stuff like this from the cash shop either. I say take pride in the fact that you earned it the "proper" way and let others do as they will. =)

I've been a heavy roleplayer for over 4 years in eso. RP is steadily declining in a lot of circles as ZoS has taken a major dump on rp'rs as well. Rp'rs like content too. Not a cash shop only dress up sim.

I deleted the two feathers I had a long time ago. I don’t have that mount. I don’t want that mount.

I felt bad a bit about never having something unique; but now I don’t feel bad at all. The CROWN store? You gotta be kidding. Lol TOO funny.

Haha, fair point. For the most part, I've been quite pleased with the questing/lore content they've been putting out, though endlessly annoyed with the monetization models. I still haven't run out of character concepts. Hell, I don't have the time to run them through all the storylines and do their narratives. I like it when they do events where rewards can be earned from doing one's usual activities. That was really amazing with the Halloween event, but it doesn't look like they're implementing that idea into their other events as of yet.

The problem stems from wanting to feel superior to other people by having something they dont.

Why does it matter if someone else uses the time they spent at work vs you using the time playing the game?

So you are saying the only benefit of the events is the ability to get something others dont have.

Thats kinda messed up really, why does what anyone else does to get items affect you in any way? You got it first without dishing out real money, they have to wait and buy it.

    Who cares?
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

It's one thing trying to engage your player base by giving them a goal to achieve with a cosmetic reward at the end... it's a whole different thing making it so long-drawn, convoluted and boring, so that when the CS option to get that same reward rolls by, players will actually consider it... At least, if they planned to add event tickets to the store, they might have given us the heads up about getting extra feathers with surplus tickets.

For everyone complaining about "grinding" events... you realize tickets were only granted for the first <quest/skull/etc> of the *day*? If it's a grind to do 1 event-related thing, during the event, maybe buying tickets is right for you.

I do agree that having tickets in the store is a slap in the face. Oh look! A cool way to get more participation in events, how fun! Rewards those who actually play the game! Oh, no, it was just giving out free stuff so latecomers will pay. *sigh*

I love this game, but really, this F2P style monietization is a real turn off. I have ESO+ and many people I play with also have ESO+. Honestly, if you want to have more fun in ESO, get Plus. That finance/marketing feels a sub with occasional store purchases isn't enough is tiring. When will people learn that reasonable prices and good quality is the way to get money out of pockets? Muggings may get money, but it leaves a bad taste.

You've "paid" 180 days for a fully leveled mount. 60 days for full speed alone. 6 months for a cool mount (1/4 evolutions) is not out of line.

I was able to get 7 feathers last quarter. I have a Nascent Indrik, plus 3 feathers toward another. After Q1 I will have a Dawnwood Indrik. After Q4 this year, I should have...whatever one is next.

For those going on about "berry fragments" I believe you're reading it wrong. Just there are 4 feather (fragments if you will) to summon a nascent indrik, there will be 4 berries (fragments) to evolve. 4 Beries of Dawnwood, 4 Berries of Onyx (or black) etc.

And for everyone griping that they have to earn another 40 tickets for another Nascent: I guess you don't play pokemon, because who complains that they have to catch another Pikachu after evolving Raichu? Can you just pay half to cost to change...oh wait, PokemonGo did just that. So much for that example.

I agree. If I don't find an event fun, I simply ignore it - like Undaunted or Midyear Mayhem. However I like New Year's Festival, so I did all 9 quests every day unless I was too tired to even run more than 2 or 3 of them...
