So according to the steam announcement eso was among the top grossing games of 2018 on steam. I find this really cool and surprising. What do you guys think?

I feel sorry for the people that bought through Steam. But, caveat emptor. A little reading on the forums there would have given them a heads up about the issues using the Steam client.

I'm not surprised--ESO's had some great deals this year. The graphics are also a refreshing change from all the indie/retro/pixel stuff that Steam loves to shove in your face when you open the store page. Nice graphics really stand out these days :p

Playing on Steam isn't that bad. Aside from the two bad days tnis year, I haven't had issues.

You can buy it on Steam, but register it on Bethesda's page. Then you download the launcher, install the game through it and play outside of Steam. I still have it in my Steam library with 0 hours played (since 2016) :)

I hope it still works like that.

EDIT: As others (see posts below) pointed out, this doesn't work anymore. I had my old beta account (created 2014) linked with the game I bought on steam in 2016, but it's not possible anymore for new accounts.

Well, makes me happy. Seems like ESO still has a fair share of years to come.

I’ve seen many of my MMO characters die when the servers were shut down, so I hope this doesn’t happen anytime soon here.

Its really good to see. Despite the forums praising and hating the Devs, I think we can all agree we do love this Games core.

ESO really put its foot out, and is just gaining more and more traction, and I for one love this. I like to see the game Im playing thriving.

If the Devs have as much planned for this year as they did last year, then I can't wait.

I don't think ESO has it's fair share of years to come. Of course I can be wrong, but to keep putting their game on sale almost every two weeks, something is wrong. What is wrong? Not a clue. Maybe too many people are buying to play, but the model is on gambling and crown store, so they keep the game on sale so the chance more people will start gambling and or buying the crown store.

I am not saying ESO will not be hear next year, but fair share? Not seeing how Zenimax is improving the servers to keep up high demand for better performance, leads me to believe we might be in the end phase of ESO and in 5 years or less, no more ESO.

What can I say, I am human. When we humans don't get communication, some of us think the worst. After all, if things were going great, Zenimax wouldn't have to twist words to make themselves look good.
Not my quote but I love this saying

What is gross revenue? Total or Steam?

If they add the direct purchases (including the bot accounts) ... would be easy to be among the Top 100 anyway. The exact placement of the tile could be paid for advert, as mentioned.

    1. Skyrim is the most popular video game of the past decade and ESO takes place in the same universe
    2. It was on sale for $5-10 several times this year
    3. It's actually a good game

    So, no, not really surprised.

However, that is top grossing games. That would include subscription and purchase of crowns.

I question the methodology of those rankings when I see free-to-play games in the top grossing titles. It means that it's not game sales nor hours played, but overall income generated. As such, no surprise to see a game like ESO with units sold, crowns sold and membership fees added together.
Even with this restriction, it means ESO is healthy, and that's good news for everyone. I'm not surprised : the game is thriving with activity and players ingame look very hooked and happy.

Sadly, it doesn't. Steam closed the door on that in 2016. Honestly, I'd been told that it was only accounts from 2015 that could do that safely, so you got in right under the wire.

That was my first thought too (I used to work in a shop which definitely did that - it was fairly common for games to be in the chart the day they were released, without us ever offering a pre-order for them). But the fact that it says right there on the page it's measured by gross revenue makes me wonder.

In the UK that would be false advertising, which is illegal. They can put together a chart any way they like, but they can't claim it's based on revenue if that's not true. As far as I know most western countries have similar laws. I can't imagine Steam would be stupid enough to make a claim like that if it's not true.

I assume its specifically revenue through Steam, for 2 reasons:
    1) Steam are the ones doing this and it's really not in their interest to advertise games which are selling really well elsewhere.
    2) I doubt they'd even have that information. ZOS is a private company, they don't release their financial information and I'd be very surprised if they'd share it with Steam just because they asked. Same for any other company.

Steam doesn't. It only tracks their users. Even hooking the Steam overlay into the game does nothing if you bought it elsewhere.

Or the vast amount of highly anticipated MMORPGS that will be coming out in the coming years. Ashes of Creation, New World and Crowfall have aspects that will likely be done better than in ESO *cough*PvP*cough*. I'm unsure about Pantheon because it'll likely attract mostly "hardcore" players, and ESO is pretty casual.

I can see myself logging into ESO a couple of times a year just to do the new Chapter and DLCs if the new MMORPGs deliver on their promises, and ESO is the MMORPG I want to see succeed the most (and I don't mean "succeed" as in who can sell more lootboxes or underwhelming DLCs).

But does steam get an kickback if you buy crowns? If so its obvious why you have to play it trough steam.

And yes the only downside of this is all the issues with steam login. If some wanted to get into ESO I would strongly recommend not buying the steam version even if cheaper.

Doesn't Steam take a cut of all sales in games sold through the platform?

I've heard that given as a reason why some games aren't on Steam, the developers don't think the extra promotion is worth losing money.

Yep. Also, I assume, why Steam won't let you log into the website anymore. Because you could bypass them and buy your crowns through Amazon or directly from ZOS.
