Where are the Capes!

I just wondered something today. Eso has no capes. I seen one of the statues in daggerfall, and it was a knight wearing a cape.

Is it because ESO has no cloth physics, could they implement those physics. All I know is I would love to see capes in ESO.

There is one cape in game and there will not be another. iirc, the Bretton hero costume has the cape but it lays flat.

Zos has said they will not add capes to the game.

Look at characters with long hair and that will explain why we don't have capes.

It caused issues in early alpha. Now, maybe, if there's a major engine overhaul in a couple years this might be a topic that can be addressed, but for now, let's just go with the idea that, for whatever reason, capes are extremely rare in Tamriel. Maybe they're just out of fashion.

That does NOT count as a cape. That is a long coat. Nowhere near the same. But I agree. I doesn't move at all. ZOS has to figure out physics before they can add capes, which sucks because I've always wanted caped really bad in this game.

Eh.... in any game I've ever played, stuff like cloaks/capes has been..... um..... gimped. This includes the SPMR titles I've played since 1985.

I don't see cloaks being viable in the next 5 years.....

That was my point. Long hair looks bad, kinda like Lego snap on hair. Capes would be much worse.

I dont understand how they cant do capes but they can add in guild tabards, its basically the same thing, I'm guessing they said they can't have the flowing style, but tabards have that? i just dont understand how tabards are a thing but capes are not

So an ancient MMO like EQ2 has engine that does capes just fine, with peak population back when it was popular far greater than ESO, and you're playing the 'engine limitation' card?

Fine - let's say it is limit of crappy ESO engine, that could very well be a factual statement. But also plain facts is much older generation MMOs managed capes just fine and no reason ESO, with competent programming, could not do so as well.

Its the Frames. Not the Frame of the tabard, but the underlying structure that the Mesh hangs off of. The Frame is what is animated, the mesh is just a graphic covering on the frame. The more elements in a frame, the more natural the movement. So, something like a door will only have one frame element, something like a cloak or cape will have dozens, if not more, to make the cape move naturally. However, everyone of those frame elements has to be rendered and animated, then the mesh has to be applied, and shaded. Soon, you have the game engine struggling to make these things move, and you end up with a slide show.

Tabards don't have a lot of frame elements in the underlying structure, like they don't flap in the breeze like you would expect a cloth or flag too.

So, to sum up, Capes are not going to be a part of this game, ever, as along as the current engine is running things.

It beggars belief that a game released after 2010 doesn't have any cloth physics. I've seen older games with cloth physics.
Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.

It is a factual statement, the game engine does not support something like cloaks and capes. It has nothing to do with the age of the engine, but how it was written.

Now, since you brought up EQ2, that game is no where near as detailed as ESO is, graphics in that game are flat, ugly and low resolution. When everything in the game looks like crap painted on wooden placards, it is probably easy to put a cape in there given it does not have to look good. And, yes the capes and cloaks in EQ2 look like crap. Not sure why you would want those in this game anyway.

I have to agree with you. It doesnt make sense. I mean, if the flowing animation is a big deal, they could make the animation similar to Breton hero costume type animation regarding cape cape.
