Where and how do I identify a bot

I see a lot of post complaining about bots, but I don't feel I've really noticed any, honestly im not very observant. I just feel like a lot of post say "look at those doleman bots" who hasn't grinded doleman?

EDIT: removed bad speculation

EDIT EDIT: feel free to give me up votes! I have like 70 post and no rank lol

What am I missing? How do I identity them?

First, the bots I see run pre-determined routes, never deviating from them, and often turning at right angles. I see them in farming zones like Bal Foyen, or farming locations like the Silverhoof Vale in Rivenspire. If you see a horde of people running together and nuking mobs who never deviate from their path and stick very tightly together, those are bots.

Second, I can make 100k in a day if I spend enough time farming. 100k a week is sales does not make someone a bot - its entirely doable if you put enough time in farming the right stuff. Everyone has things they like to farm. I prefer to sell raw max level mats, nirncrux, and alchemy reagents.

Got to any starter zone and wander. You will see boundless storm spamming pet sorcs with handles like "sdgf4567" farming wolves. Or one person leading a train of others around in a node farming circle. They then trade or sell these resources for in game currency which they sell for real life cash money.

It is much easier for me to notice a bot train than just a random guy using some sort of program to level by killing the same enemy over and over for days straight (remember the thread about the Wrothgar Sorc from a million years ago?) But bots at dolmens prior to when they made the ground explode if you stood in place too long were fairly obvious too. Stood in place, same one or two moves on repeat, never looted anything.

Bot trains are completely obvious basically within one second of seeing them. Regular people don't move like that when playing with friends. And they usually have stupid names like ghjhbg156416 although sometimes they have a few mixed in with real sounding character/account names.

I was fishing in Grahtwood at the rivers north of Elden Root Temple the other day and a group of three people kept circling round and killing the cats and spriggans in the area (which were not hostile to me so I was mad :) ). After a while I logged off, did real world stuff, came back to the game a few hours later and they were still going on. So I assume they were bots.

No idea myself how someone even programs one...

I wouldn't worry about it, if you don't notice them there's no point in going looking for them. On PC at least they're nothing like the problem they were at launch when ZOS took firm action including game masters kicking them. The most successful fix was introducing restrictions on character deletion/creation.

Are they on console? If so, how? I swear I've seen some 'bot looking' characters running around in a starter zone once. It was a train of people and it looked weird. I even saw a group of sorcerers in a row, spamming attacks at crabs once... I think they were crabs lol.

If you see a player doing a repetitive motion over and over trying talking with it, if it doesn't respond it's a bot.

Also in low pop areas that have high pop up mobs you'll see trains of like 10 people running around using 1 attack. Those are bots. it's a computer program controlling all of them.

That "Player" Might Be a Bot When...
    • Their character name is a random jumble of meaningless letters and numbers
    • When you examine their gamer profile, they have no achievements unlocked or 5 achievement points for completing Chapter 1 of the main quest "Soul Shriven in Coldharbor"
    • They are wearing prisoner's rags and wielding a greatsword
    • They are crouched by a harvest node (usually blacksmithing these days) and immediately harvest it when it spawns. If you place "questionable sack of meat" memento or "bear trap" memento in front of them, they will immediately activate it.
    • They are a sorcerer with both pets out, spamming heavy attacks with a staff and/or spamming lightning form, and standing in place (spotted in areas with respawning mobs that drop leather scraps, usually in large groups)
    • They have some of the above characteristics and are running pre-defined routes through an area (at times, with a mount and scripted use of rapids); often preferentially attack blacksmithing nodes and can be found in Craglorn or starter zones

The best way to get more bots and better bots is to post openly about how to identify them...

...but I'll merely add that it's not just one or two things - it's a conglomeration of things that add up. NEVER report someone as a bot without making the attempt to confirm by whispering and/or calling out in zone chat. It just avoids confusion. The bot trains are easier to spot but the single farmers running circuits are often hard to distinguish between people just grinding and watching Netflix across the room, lol

How to spot a bot in 5 easy steps:

    1. Go to a starter zone or any one of a handful of places with high mob density where the mobs have very simple melee behaviours (bears, tigers, basic zombies, etc)
    2. Notice the huge trains of characters moving like robots, all following the exact same footpath, all spamming the same skills (usually I see Templars spamming jabs these days)
    3. Report them! Take time out of your own leisure to thanklessly support the game, never knowing if anything actually becomes of it because they "Don't disclose the actions taken".
    4. Realize how incredibly easy it is to spot this kind of crap and realize that if ZoS cared to employ even a single gamemaster they could probably ban hundreds of bots in a day, yet the bots you'll see are actually fairly high level most of the time, suggesting they've been successfully farming for quite some time which demonstrates that no functional action is being taken.
    5. Give up and go about your business. Don't forget to check the shop for the latest ways you can financially support their inaction. ;)

Bots on console are simple rubberband on attack button up to macro use. They mostly stand in one place and spam casting.
    This is very visible.

On pc you have bots running in an route and killing all enemies, north of elden root is an popular place.
Unless its huge groups of them or you stay around it can be hard to know they are bots.
Remember first time I saw bots after returning, it was north west in stonefall, I was questing and saw 5-6 players running around killing enemies, I assumed they farmed while waiting for dolmen, dolmen came on but they continued to run in circles while I did the dolmen alone, noticed the movement was the same each round.

Other times then you have 20 players in grathwood its pretty obvious.

Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

    This, generally.
If characters follow a predetermined route "automatically", chances are these are the bot trains you have heard so much about.

That too, and its really fun to mess with then that way.

But in general... don't worry about them, report them when they cross your path, and let ZOS sort it out.

A character that is repeatedly doing the same thing for hours is usually a bot.

For example, you might see someone jumping every 3 seconds in a town for 4+ hours (I've reported this before).

Other common bots are ones that farm hides. You find them in delves and overland areas that have a lot of animals that can be killed. They typically run in groups of other bots, all following the exact same path, casting the exact same skills.

The third kind of bot is the node farmer. There are two types of these bots. One just camps a single node with a macro that keeps pressing the harvest button (so it picks the node as soon as it spawns). These botters typically have a few dozen bots camped out at different nodes in one (or more) zones. Another type of harvest bot runs along a scripted path between nodes. They are harder to spot since human-controlled farmers behave in the same way. You will usually find them when they been dragged off-route my an enemy or something and are trying to get back on their route, but are running into a wall.

Basically, if you do any kind of farming, you'll see lots of bots. You'll also see lots of them at dolmens, but those are less important since they aren't ruining the in-game economy (they're just levelling up accounts that they then sell for real money).

Leather farmers are the most obvious ones. They will attack any enemies near the vicinity, best thing to test this behaviour is to lure enemies on their spot and see their reaction.

Here's a video I caught today, there are plenty more in my channel. I've lured them multiple times and still the same behaviour.

    "look at those doleman bots"

Why does everyone call Dolmens for Doleman? ;)

Anyway bots, you can usually spot them in their prisoner raggy clothes, with a 2-Hand sword, lvl 4, running from node to node in straight lines over and over and over.

There are also bot trains, same as above, only they are running on top of each other, 10-20 at a time, they seem to be following the same path exactly. There's a number of places in the game world that is very specifically always populated by these trains. A place in grathwood has a dense population of tigers that drop leather so the trains there runs in circles harvesting what must be insane amounts. This is because if they are grouped then all of them share each others corpses as long as they are not too far from eachother. So if 1 bot kills 1 tiger, that's 20x chances that there will be dropped loot (or however many bots they have there at the time). You can see how they can quickly generate crazy amounts of leather and trash items to sell to merchants for gold. I hang out there a while to see what happen and occasionally a bot would leave the area. I followed it and it went to the merchant in the nearby town and then it headed back to the main train again.

I was wondering that myself. The only time I ever saw a "bot" jumping was when they were trying to talk in Zone chat ("Buy gold from blahblahblah.com") and they were not in the chat window. Each time the software sent a space, they would jump.
