Gathering Bots

On a short gathering session I encountered two types of gathering Bots in the game.
The first type is invisible, you know he is there because you can hear the sound of the node being gathered and if you are in the right spot you see a name appear briefly (usually some random name like mfgprt).
The second type appears out of thin air at the node, gathers it and disappears again, only to magically appear a short distance away at the next node to gather that one, and so on.
I hope steps are being taken to deal with these types of exploits. Clearly they are the work of cheaters and gold-sellers, neither of which are a welcome sight in TESO.

In fairness, this could also be the result of different instances colliding. The same nodes being linked across multiple instances. The problem with the game's instancing is why a lot of times logging out and logging back in can fix it, because it resets that. I've been playing with my wife in a group and had her disappear but still able to see the white arrow over her head (excluding times where we're on different parts of a quest where this should be happening).

Then again it could be bots or cheaters, I just wanted to propose an alternative idea :)
And so did many brave men, women, and beast fall to the end of Beta, never to be heard from again. All that is left, is whispers of the adventures they had.

I started seeing this yesterday, and thought it was a bad connection/latency on my part that was causing graphical sync issues. :(

Whip out your broadsword and give them a nice spanking! Or you can screenshot and/or report them :P
To succeed you must do the things that you think you cannot.

Just a tidbit about instancing; if you group with someone and go to a place on the map where you have completed the quest and the other person hasn't, you will most probably not see each others.

It's a bit weird, but since you are in the instance of 'you saved us from monsters' and the other person is in the instance of 'we are overrun with monsters, help us', it's pretty normal you can't interact.

    Screenshot what?

It's pretty obviously intended to prevent reporting. (aside from the innocent possibility)

So it’s not just me then, I spend a lot of time walking (yes walking) around picking up all sorts of stuff that others miss, then yesterday I was walking up to some Jute and it just vanished as I got there.

At other times I’ve walked up to an iron ore node with no one in the vicinity for miles and just as I press E to start the action a ‘ghost’ appears from nowhere and ‘ninjas’ the node and vanishes. I quickly zoom out and there is nothing anywhere to be seen. I’ve also had this happen when opening a chest only to watch the contents vanish in front of me, again no one in sight either before or after.

I was also in a dungeon yesterday and noticed a group of around 10 people standing in a half circle looking at a pile of dead bodies. One person stood out as she was shooting her bow at exactly 1 second intervals at nothing, then the NPC appeared and died almost instantly, this went on and on and on adding to the pile of bodies, farming I guess.

To be honest items/players phasing does not mean a glitch, the world is split by a number of phases (for player distribution) each phase is unique and nodes can be in one but not the other. Further each such node is split in regional phases depending on your quest state for that region (i.e. you saved the town or you havent started/completed that quest yet).

Unfortunately it seems some of the resource nodes are inside these quest phases but still visible from outside the phase. This means that you can see a chest (for instance) go to it and just as you get there it disappears (i.e. you entered the quest phase where it doesnt exist/has been looted).

You can verify this by just walking backwards when this happens and the chest (or other) suddenly reappears again. This ofc. isnt limited to resource nodes but anything dynamic thats changed in that quest phase.

I agree that this is more likely to be a case of phasing than exploiting, I ran into this a LOT in beta. But I'd keep an eye on it, it SHOULDN'T really function this way, someone COULD be exploiting and you could never report them, because you can't see them and would never know (except for the nodes vanishing).

This is happening in most public dungeons at the "boss" that is required for you to get the credit for completing it. Sometimes you have to do it a few times because so many people there you aren't getting credit for the kill. (maybe a little slow or what not since it dies in a second) Not sure about the ones that stay there hours, perhaps they are trying to get something specific. Hopefully it will clear up as time goes on, because it is rather annoying. (not to mention I prefer a bit more challenge)

    its not accidental.
    they are undergound.

i just started a new character and found them all over the starter area of bleakrock. nodes (specificaly cloth, iron and herbs) vanish and someone is under the ground (if you managed to be ontop of the node when they gather, you can often see their name)

while its true that the ground swallows people in game from time to time..those poor souls fall right to the center of the game world (or like in the old morrowind days, break their ankles and legs on the invisible floor. done that enough times myself around solthsheim on the original xbox bloodmoon) this is deliberate becasue they are just out of view, not tumbling to the depths of the unsolid underworld.

these bots are just under the surface, moving from node to node at top speed.
just like back in world of warcraft. (maybe you should hire some GMs to pick em up and drop em from height, like they occasionaly did there. was fun to see em fall out of the sky from nowhere.

or, alternatively. populate the underworld with nice, unkillable slaughterfish. that stay in the top layer area, that way if you DO accidentaly fall thru the world, you fall far enough that you cant be eaten by them...

For 2 or 3 times also i see a node desappearing in front of my eyes as i get close to it and dont see anyone arrond. I tought it was a visual bug in the game and moved on. but after seeing the video with bots teleporting from node to node and vanishing, now i know whats going on.

That explains why so many gold sellers are in this game since early access days.

I walk also in this game (you find amazing things and beautiful scenes doing this). I have noticed nodes there one second and when I go to get them..gone. I know fiancé and I do all quests together, so it isn't the phasing. But also I don't hear anything like the node being used. So not sure if it is just an in game glitch or bot.

But I have played many MMOs where invisible bots did this.

New MMO, same old exploits. I remember seeing the same teleport trick in GW2, though they have personal node looting they weren't depriving anyone else of the node. It was just disconcerting when you'd be in the middle of nowhere and suddenly there was someone else standing next to you tinking on the node.

From the issues specific to certain machines involving characters being thrown about, it appears that it is possible to manipulate character position from the client side. As such, I would not be surprised if people are exploiting this.

    It isn't necessarilly bots.

Say you complete a quest in an area that drives away the bad guys. For you now you'll see only friendlies in the area, But for others that haven't done that quest yet, they'll still see the bad guys.

You are probably experiencing people in a different instance of the area.

No dude. You'll see it yourself sooner or later. These guys are maphacking to nodes and gathering them. Sometimes they are even 'below' the ground. You can 'see' them when you look at the node as it's harvested and your pointer tells you who it is, but you'll never actually see their character then they'll teleport away to the next node.

I got a couple of screenshots but apparently you can't just '/report' and add in the name. I'm not sure how to report the guys I saw.

If you haven't changed it, I believe F1 by default is for reporting a player you have targeted.

I remapped my to F9 since I use F1-F8 for other things.

I have noticed especially in Bleakrock that the nodes disappear at an alarming rate. In fact, I have now given up gathering in that area because it is a total waste of time. You can see the node and nobody is around and next second it is just gone.

I do not think that banning people for buying gold is the answer. I think that they should just fix this very expensive, plus running costs, game. All the occurances listed above have never, never, never happened or allowed to happen in any other MMORPG, and I have played all the major ones.

well, they may not like it, but a very simple way to fix it would be to make the nodes personal. that is, to make nodes appear for just your player. phased as it were.

yes, this means that the bots can gather till the cows come home....but then, there is no auction house to sell to players on (unless they infiltrate a guild) so they can only sell via chat, or via NPCs.

they would also have to deal with the no exp/loot issue with low level leather, becasue otherwise it creates a market for the bots to murder anything low level over and over to get the rawhide scraps, to sell to higher level crafters
(who cant gather the stuff anymore becasue they out-leveld the mobs that drop the rawhide scraps)

its a case of (as someone else said) feeding a sacrificial goat to the wolf pack, to keep them from eating your sheep flock.
sacrifice the nodes to the gather-bots (get them later some how else) but at least allow normal players the ability to enjoy the game

Yea, there are Mklmh's and Yyttffa's camping out nodes. I've seen their names under ground when they ninja a node.

Gosh I wonder why? hmm ;)

Banning buyers and sellers is the only real way to address it. If they want they can start out with a term suspension for the first offense and ban for the second for buyers, but that is the only real way to put a dent in the market.

It has worked for other games that have done this.

I saw another type of bot: it had a name that was a jumble of random characters, and it had accessed the resource node to block anyone else from accessing it. It just stood there doing nothing.

I got lucky and managed to report one of these invisible teleporting bots: I started harvesting a node and a jumbled mass of characters popped up in the middle of the screen, which was surprising, but I imagined it was a bot having already seen the visible teleporting kind. So I move up to harvest another node, and lo and behold that "name" pops-up again, but this time I was ready to select it with the F key and report it.
The only reason that I managed to get it was because it probably teleported to the node that I was already in the process of harvesting, and as such it was stuck there until I finished picking up the materials.

Something has to be done to stop these bots or at least prevent them from denying us from gathering materials.
