    Online businesses commonly ban:
    • Speech that should be banned.
    • Speech so similar to what should be banned that they can't be bothered to sort it out.

In one extreme example, at least one sexually-oriented forum bans ANY mention of children, even in contexts such as:
    • How can I enjoy sex without my children getting the slightest inkling I'm doing so?
    • Here's how I took advantage of the fact that the kids were away for the weekend.

The reason, obviously, is stay a huge distance away from anything that could be construed as child ***.

Why should ANY speech be banned?

A little common sense goes a long way. If you think for a moment that any of 1000 people viewing zone chat could get offended (probably due to their own misunderstanding), best to refrain.

Not worth the time trying to explain to a brilliant CSR why some brilliant player is completely misinterpretting whatever you were throwing out there.

That said, Zone chat not intended for IRL conversations. People come to the game to get away from that crap, not see it debated to no end in a game zone.

TL;DR: Whether you intended to offend or not, you did this to yourself.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

    Earn it.

IRL'ing for a while for assorted reasons, in forum, and in game.
I am neither warm, nor fuzzy...

People who complain about being blocked/reported, are likely trolls/provocateurs/jerks who deserved it.

And then try to hide behind stuff like "snowflakes" "oversensitive" "freeze peach!" and

Troll gets out-trolled by special snowflake.

Troll runs to forums and posts disingenuous PSA whining about the unfairness of it all.

Who's being a special snowflake now?

As a guy who likes to keep his record clean, I am still kinda salty about this because this is my first offense since 2014 but I feel the need to warn the public to avoid this kind of incident so be careful on what you say specially for those of you who likes to socialized, hang out, and help newbies in zone chat.

Before you judge me, hear me out. I did not intend nor bare any kind of ill will towards the involved parties and yet I was reported for hate speech but, surprisingly, hours passed and no one reacted in the zone chat but instead we were calmly talking about topic like adults and even joke about it. To be clear, this was not a troll or raging moments in zone chat, in fact, we were just talking about something that has led to a chain of events to the topic at hand which is the Scottish comedian that has gotten a lawsuit because he taught his pug to do a German (I will not say the N word anymore) salute.

My offense was, I cited some of his said words from his video as an example while I was sharing his tragic incident. I already talked to support about this but they are basing the offense from what you type instead of what the intention is which is understandable so no hard feelings to support.

That said, lesson is learned. I will probably refrain from answering questions, helping, whispering back to strangers from zone chat in the future because everything seems offensive now a days.

Yep, too many people out there looking to be offended by anything and everything. And too many game companies jumping on the P.C. Bandwagon to enforce whatever someone deems to be hate speech. Hate speech laws are absurd. Sticks and Stones.....I am not offended by anything and couldn't care less what people write in Chat.

Oh, one more thing: If people don't like what they see in Chat all they have to do is not look at it or just close the Chat box. But instead, they want to make an issue of anything and everything and feel like they accomplished something by reporting someone. Sad times we live in.

When I first started playing this game I joined a guild and participated in all the group activities.

I don't swear in public, ever. It's not that I don't know the words, I just don't like them. That said, I've never asked anyone to watch their language, nor have I ever suggested I was uncomfortable.

During the last group run I did in in ESO (six months ago), one of the guys decided to tease me about my absence of epithets -- he started dropping continuous f-bombs. Others in the group joined in, and this went on for several minutes.

As I suggested, I don't see it as my place to modify others' behavior; so, I merely indicated I was tired and dropped from the group. I've stayed with the guild, but have never done another event, have quit Discord altogether, and I never use the chat feature in the game.

Too many people fail to grasp the essential difference between good manners and political correctness, and just because we can say things doesn't mean we necessarily should.

I never used zone chat in ESO because after years of playing shooters I could crash some fragile ego without even realizing.
    Now I'm even I'm certain I won't do it. Thanks! :D

I'm fairly non-PC as my friends will attest but you have to bear in mind that just because you didn't originally create the content or even if you don't endorse the content, sharing offensive content is a no-no.
I'm sorry for you but to be fair, it's a given that you don't refer to certain topics while on a public forum. I'm not saying I agree with that but it is the way things are going.
Fairly soon, there will be a list of terms that are unusable in any context.

That's kind of unfair because it is suppression but I get your point.

    Suppression of what?

When you go to somebodies home you are obligated to oblige by their rules. Some applies to private establishments that you are guest in.

Even in public, freedoms have limitations. Chiefly that the do not interfere with anyone else's freedoms. Freedom of Speech has never been, and never intended to be carte Blanche to say whatever you want wherever you want to whomever you want.
This, ZOS is free to demand that khajiit characters don't use the world I or me in zone chat, they has to use this one, Khajiit or character name :)
Their game, their rules. Granted they should be consistent but overall this.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Here's the problem. The U.S. is the only country in the world that has speech protected by law.

He's not a U.S. citizen, so he took the chance someone would be offended when he did the bit.

The other problem is the conflation that free speech is without consequence. Intent and context matter, for sure, but just as you probably should avoid religion and politics in mixed company, trying to use a video game to discuss current events, political ideals or whatever else is on your brain, you take the risk and really, is this the place for that?

I don't have a dog in this race, I feel that the entire situation is silly, but you knew you were venturing into waters you couldn't chart when you began the conversation or escalated the conversation into topical hot spots.

Nothing to do with snowflakes or P.C. here, just someone more than likely saw you bringing up a topic that easily could lead to argument and rhetoric and vitriol.

You create an atmosphere that is not fun for players when you try to bring real world issues and discussion into a video game.

Reddit and 4chan are there for a reason after all.

GAB was the place, so they got PayPal and other payment processers, as well as the domain name and hosting providers to stop doing business with them. BitChute is now getting the same treatment (so far only with payment processers).

Speech that has consequences attached to it in form of punitive measures is not "free". The whole point of "free speech" is to not have punitive measures for speaking out. It's the damn definition of it.

And whether or not a video game is a place for it, well, obviously he wasn't the only one who was talking about it, so apparently there was a desire for it. If nobody wanted to hear it, I doubt he would have continued.

This is a complete misunderstanding of how protected speech works. You do not get to say whatever you want whenever you want. If you call for violence, or infringe on another persons rights, there is consequences.

If you knowingly lie to authorities, misrepresent yourself in business or use the 1st amendment to circumvent say the 4th or 5th, there is consequences.

The speech or act itself in this case probably wasnt even in question, rather its the subject matter and the use of systems to discuss non related topics in a video game.

Beyond all of that, you agreed to the code of conduct when you signed up for your account. Everyone agreed to abide by those rules. You break those rules there is consequences.

Rhetoric, conjecture and rhetoric on either side is simply not allowed in their system, which you agreed to, once again.

And how is talking about things that happened a "call for violence"? The way you treat it looks very much like an excuse to censor everyone.

Never again will I use zone chat to socialized/chill, in fact, I would refrain from talking to strangers because who knows if they're baiting you so they can report you. However, it would be nice if ZOS adds specific chat tab for trades, LFG, & etc. So I can completely disable zone chat in my chat box.

so you are saying your are incapable of ignoring non-relevant things within the system of communication? You have to respond to everything you agree or disagree with and can't filter the noise?

When you want to sell something, or are looking for a group, why does whatever else is happening within that chat window have any affect on you what-so-ever?

You can't wax poetic about non-gaming related things so you need a special place that only gives you certain topics?

Why not just use the system in place and don't interact with whatever you deem "a trap"

It is not easy to just talk about gaming stuff while playing games all the time because some topics are just related be it game or real life issue and can't be avoided.

Also people might misinterpret this topic as a rant but this is just an PSA with me telling how did it go down so that people can reflect and have insight on do's and don'ts. While some criticized and mocked me, they still gave a great insight on the do's and don'ts which was a great help for me so I can avoid getting an offense in the future, I also hope that it will help our curious viewers that may or may not haves suffered the same offense.

You maybe able to simply ignore and not bat an eye from the zone chat but some can't, not all people are alike. I also can't help but to poke my nose especially when someone asks for help or a question and I know the answer but like I said, lesson learned, I will refrain from using zone chat as MMO socialization.
